Man dies after beating at assisted living home; suspect arrested

SHERIDAN, Ore. – A man who was apparently beaten in the head with a hammer at his assisted living center in Sheridan died at the hospital on Thursday.

Ronald McKenzie’s family was by his side when he died, the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office said.

Yamhill County sheriff’s deputies said the assault happened early Wednesday morning at the Deer Meadows assisted living center. Staff members found McKenzie, 51, on the floor of his room bleeding from his head. A hammer was on the floor next to him. It appeared he had been struck multiple times, deputies said.

Deputies arrested the suspect, 51-year-old Nathan Brewer, at the scene and took him to the Yamhill County Jail. He was charged with assault. Bail was set at $150,000.
