Suicidal man firing rifle in SE Portland taken into custody

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man firing a rifle and threatening to kill himself early Monday in southeast Portland was safely taken into custody by police.

Several officers heard the shots shortly after 5 a.m. as they arrived at the residence.

Police say the man threw down the rifle and followed commands to get down on the ground. The 32-year-old was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment.

Police had activated their Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team, but they were canceled after the man was in custody.

Officers found evidence of gunfire, but no one was hurt.
