EUGENE, Ore. -- Officers found illegal fireworks and the tools to make improvised explosives in an apartment near 8th and Washington after the person living there hurt himself in an explosion early Thursday morning, Eugene police said.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment; officials haven't released the severity of his injuries.
Brian Markowsky, 26, was injured at around 5 a.m. when an illegal firework exploded inside a pipe near his apartment.
Markowsky was uncooperative when officers tried to find out where the explosion took place, but police said multiple calls from neighbors helped them narrow it down to an apartment near 8th and Washington.
Officers kept a safety perimeter around the apartment until they could obtain and serve a search warrant for Markowsky's apartment.
Upon entering the apartment at around 3 p.m. Thursday, the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit found numerous illegal fireworks and other items used to make homemade explosives.
Markowsky was cited for manufacture of a destructive device, and police said there could be additional charges pending.
He was not taken into custody as he was still being treated at the hospital.
