WELCHES, Ore. – A man was seriously injured when his car crashed into a pole along Highway 26 in Welches on Sunday morning, state police said.

Police said Douglas R. Walters, 64, of Rhododendron, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to OHSU in Portland, where he is in critical condition.

An off-duty firefighter who witnessed the crash told police Walters was driving his car eastbound at a high speed on Highway 26 approaching Welches Road when his car crosses the highway and struck a pole head-on on the other side of the road. It happened just after 9 a.m.

Firefighters pulled Walters out of the car.

Police say alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. Walters did not appear to be wearing a seat belt, police said.
