Neighbor: Man shot by deputies was suffering from mental issues
ALOHA, Ore. - A 56-year-old man shot by Washington County sheriff's deputies later died of his injuries.
Jeffery David Anderson, of Aloha, died Sunday morning at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) after he had been shot Saturday night.
The incident began around 8:15 p.m. on Southwest 195th Avenue, just south of Farmington Road.
Deputies had responded there on a report of a man with a gun and within a few minutes of their arrival, they fired at the armed suspect.
No further details about what transpired in those minutes have been released but neighbors said the man had been threatening people.
"(He was) walking down the road with a rifle with a big clip and supposedly pointing the rifle at children," said Ricky Glen, who lives in the area. "Very disturbed, obviously, shouting out different kinds of things."
"They were telling him to get on the ground, so I guess he acted like he was getting on the ground," Glen added. "(He) picked the rifle back up, pointed at the cops, pulled the trigger and the gun jammed. So the cops got lucky."
The sheriff's office said this was the second time they had been called to the man's house within a few days but would not comment on what the previous incident was about. The incident was captured on home video and showed deputies with weapons drawn confronting Anderson, who surrendered to them without incident. No details about that incident have been released.
Next-door neighbor Sherry Statler said deputies had also been called out there a few months ago and that Anderson had been struggling with mental issues lately, which is what led his family to call the sheriff's office in the past.
"I heard depression," she said. "I heard that he was on some medication and they were concerned that he had taken too much. It's kind of sad because he was a great guy and he tried really hard to, you know, do right by his family and everything. I'm sorry to hear it went bad for him."
"He was a great neighbor," she added. "He was always caring for - when we'd go on vacation, he'd take out our garbage. He was always looking after our home."
Statler said she also talked with Anderson's wife, who only found out what had happened when she got home and came across the police scene.
"(She was) so upset and so surprised," she said. "I mean, you could just see she had no idea it was going to go so badly for him."
Anderson's family was too upset to talk to the media on Sunday. They are still trying to figure out why he went out into the street with a gun in the first place.
The shooting remains under investigation and two deputies involved in the incident are on administrative leave.
So they knew this man was disturbed and had been to his house before--but rather than forcibly taking him to a hospital for involuntary commitment/assessment by a psychiatrist they allowed him to remain free and as a result he could have killed others and lost his own life in the process? Â Way to go, Aloha PD. Â Personally, I'm NOT impressed.
 @Melissa Stidham-Clary Aloha has no PD. It's unincorporated. That's the Washington County Sheriff's Department.Â
 @Melissa Stidham-Clary Aloha PD??  Do you have a clue?  forcibly take him?  You really have no idea do you....this man made a decision to have a deputy shoot him...it's not rocket science, he wanted to die...end of story.  If his wife and friends knew he had a problem, then maybe they should of taken care of it before it came to this.
And Channel 12 has an i-witness who videotaped the whole thing.
How much garbage do you have to be taken care of while you're on vacation . . ?
According to poster here there's a constitutional right to own and carry a gun. But if do it alright for the police to shoot and kill you. Hmmm Seems like there's a disconnect someplace.
In this case it will be interesting to see the police justification for killing this man.
@Hiker123 you should check out the video footage that was aired on channel 12 this morning. A neighbor got great video of this guy holding the gun, pointed at police while yelling and acting generally crazed.
 @oh4FS  @Hiker123 My point still stands.Â
@Hiker123 I guess I am not clear on what that point is.
 @Hiker123 Your point stand lonely.
Boo Hoo.
Obviously things weren't right, his pompadour was listing.
I feel for the police officers, suicide by cop puts a heavy burden on them.
Suicide by cop KPTV has better pics and video

I'm a little confused by this story.   It doesn't say whether or not he ever was threatening anyone, he was merely seen with a gun and therefore gunned down. Something's missing here.

@ConcernedOregonian "(He was) walking down the road with a rifle with a big clip and supposedly pointing the rifle at children," said Ricky Glen, who lives in the area. "Very disturbed, obviously, shouting out different kinds of things."
Another person with no common sense. At least the cops got to him first before he was able to murder suicide his family or something like that.
 @Caspertoo Or eat the neighbors cat and like those other things!
@Caspertoo ........boy, you sure jumped to a lot of conclusions with that post
 @Rob C  @Caspertoo Armchair quarterbacks abound on comment boards. I'll admit though, there isn't a lot to go on for conclusions here, and my first impression was less than positive (towards either the 54 year old guy with the gun, OR the cops)...but I'll wait a bit and see what pops up after 5-O has a chance to sort it out.
@Don_Keyshow @Rob C @Caspertoo Go to kptv.com to see the video. The police were right to shoot him
