Man's jaw broken during robbery
PORTLAND, Ore. - A young man was badly injured during a robbery in East Portland Sunday evening and may even need a steel plate of some kind to repair damage to his broken jaw.
The attack happened around 9 p.m. at Southeast 172nd Avenue and East Burnside Street.
According to police, three black males attacked two white males on the street and stole some items from them.
One of the men who was attacked, a 19-year-old, ended up with a broken jaw and had to undergo surgery, according to his father. The other man was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries.
The victim's father told KATU his son and a friend had just gotten off TriMet's MAX line and were jumped about two blocks away.
Neighborhood residents said they're not surprised that something like that would happen.
"It's just a pretty bad place to be," said Karen Williams. "We walk during the day but we'd never go out at night."
"It's a little uneasy," said Venny White. "We've been here for years now and we've heard a lot of different things. There have been killings, murders, you know... within a mile radius."
The suspects remain on the loose. TriMet has handed over security camera footage to police since the attack happened near a MAX station but it's unknown at this point whether investigators will find the footage useful.
Anyone who has information about what happened is asked to call police.
