Mayor monitors anti-police brutality protest

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Mayor Charlie Hales found himself in the middle of a protest about police brutality Friday night.
A few dozen people made their way from Holladay Park to downtown as part of an International Day Against Police Brutality.
Hales said he was observing the protest in person to learn how police officers respond to protests.
The group of protesters wore bandanas, hurled profanities and insults at the media and police officers.
About 50 people weaved their way through the streets of Northeast and downtown Portland for more than two hours. They yelled, chanted and at one point they barked like dogs.
Hales said, just as the protesters have the right to free speech, the community has the right to stay safe through the help of police officers.
"The police bureau has to calibrate a response. People have a First Amendment right to say whatever they want to say and walk down the sidewalks of the city and say it," he said. "So they have to calibrate their response to what people are doing and whether they're breaking the law. This group is not breaking the law so the police bureau is monitoring them and standing by.
According to organizers, this international protest against police brutality began 16 years ago in Switzerland.
Letâs face it, police misconduct hurts everyone â including the police as they lose support, trust and respect. Do you know how to find out if your police are what they should be? And, if not, how they can be improved? Follow my blog at http://improvingpolice.wordpress.com and read âArrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off...â
Â
Ha! Freedom of free speech and they had FREE media coverage to voice their objections to police brutality. Instead, they were pretty disgusting in the way they "protested". This is just another form of bullying from these people.Â
great .. another Portland mayor who monitors ... like whammy sammy did with the occupiers .. keep Portland STUPID
what a bunch of moron. If you want to prevent police brutality act like a human being.
they should have went with my suggestion of mooing like cows, or baahing like sheep. what were they thinking?!
They were barking.
Barked like dogs? I wonder if they've figured out how truly worthless this protest was.

"The group of protesters wore bandanas, hurled profanities and insults at the media and police officers." And they they wonder why the police overreact? I cannot imagine what it is like for the police who must day after day deal with the scum of humanity; must deal with the hate and taunts of people like this. People today display no respect for the police. While some of this may be earned, I believe much of it is not. Americans value their "freedoms" but often take those freedoms far beyond what is reasonable.

Protests like these say a lot more about the protesters than the police. Â Wearing bandanas and barking like dogs? Â Really? Â Acting like idiots is supposed to generate support for your "cause"? These morons have no idea what police brutality is, because most are too young to have experienced the police reaction to the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and '60s.. Â If they really want to see police brutality today, move to South Africa or any number of other places around the world.. Â Just avoid Johannesburg, where the police will tie you to their vehicle and drag you to death for double-parking. Â Protesters of police brutality would likely be burned alive in a place like that. Â
True, the Portland Police have had their share of excessive force complaints, some of them justified. Â But the vast majority of the officers conduct themselves professionally in a very difficult job, in a community where too many people are determined to be victims of police "brutality" no matter how reasonably the officers behave.
@StealthActivist Police brutality? 50 and 60's. What about Rodney King? Was that in the 50 and 60's? What about alracations that haven't made the news? I'd tell what watch group to check out for stats but i'm sure u'd find a way to discredit them. So keep your head in the sand and believe that we are in Disneyland. There is a reason police now a days dress in bdu's. Have you asked yourself who are they going to war with?
@lousecrapton Rodney King gets lottery lottery win. Never learned to swim.
@lousecrapton
"There is a reason police now a days dress in bdu's. Have you asked yourself who are they going to war with?"
Pretty obvious: Criminals who are much better armed than the police!

@StealthActivist @lousecrapton but a day is coming unfortunately where worse then thi wil occure God help us when this becomes an evry day occurrence.Â
Patrick Preston sounds a little butt hurt that the protestors didn't give interviews....it's so sad that they would dance for his cameras; poor Preston.
I hate it when these little pukes practice their public protests under the framework of the constitution of the united states of america and exercise their first amendment rights. This is not what we call Freeedom. Â
@lousecrapton lol
@lousecrapton   Are you being ironic or just exercising your right to express idiotic ideas?
@Icarus @lousecrapton lomg...lt
(like..oh my god...like, totally)
@Icarus @lousecrapton Ironic? Kinda like these idiots on these comments who condemn these citizens and then turn around and freak because their 2nd amendment rights (in thier feeble minds) may be taken away? Naw not me
@Icarus @lousecrapton Some of these crazies who only interpret the constitution to benefit their warped view of america are ripe for a nazi state. All they need is a leader. SCARY. Â
@lousecrapton  Seriously, I believe that is the greatest threat to Civil Rights everywhere; the notion that Civil Rights are political footballs.
On the Right there are the people that condemn and bemoan the public assembly of people who speak for liberal issues and believe that the police should crack down and shut them up. Â
On the Left there is currently a howl for "gun control" because that appears to be an issue that only affects the Right. Â
In short; each side behaves as if the best way to stick it to their political opponents is to limit the Civil Rights of the other side.  The short sighted and completely ignorant part of that perspective is that Civil Rights are not partisan but they are enjoyed by all Americans. And, it is has always been a revered tradition that Americans stand up for Civil Rights....regardless....and it actually means more, has greater honor, when an American stands for the right of another person to freely exercise their Civil Rights rather than standing for his own Rights or the Rights of his peers. Â
That tradition of honor has been forgotten and Civil Rights have been depreciated by social ignorance to matters of simple opinion and party flags that are attacked and defended as in a game of capture the flag. My family didn't go to war to and stand for public service for some of the Civil Rights or part of the Constitution nor are those sacrifices made for particular people or a party; those sacrifices were to defend all the liberties of America for All the People to enjoy equally.
Â
I hate it when these little pukes practice their public protests under the framework of the constitution of the united states of america. This is not what we call freeedom. Â
Hate begets hate. Stupidity makes the news.Â
@Justanother1Â Â there is much hate in the news also....but hate is just stupidity refined and concentrated.Â
Really?  'The news' is going to pretend that these maggot-infested, non-working, anarchist, trouble-making bums have anything to say? Â
How about letting us know about the Benghazigate cover-up that is about to be exposed?Â

"The group of protesters wore bandanas, hurled profanities and insults at the media and police officers."
Just a bunch of anarchists. Notice they were carrying the anarchist flag.
@RalphCramden It also says that they barked like dogs, too bad that they don't have something real to protest, then people might actually listen to them.Â
@BarbWire
They act like animals and therefore have no credibility.
@RalphCramden lptc
(lets pretend to care)
@RalphCramden    I would defend those kids as the most informed group of people but one cannot claim that police brutality isn't a huge social issue, particularly, when Portland itself is under Federal Scrutiny for violating the civil rights of citizens and brutalizing them. Even an inarticulate voice standing for justice is better than no voice and far more noble than the voice that speaks against justice and defends injustice.
@Icarus
No one gives them any credibility because of the package they wrap their protest in. All these folks are anarchists.
@Icarus
I disagree. I worked the streets for over 30 years and know this movement.
They are lazy, entitled, drug using, antigovernment (in a very aggressive way), criminals (some with some violent crimes) and rarely work. They are parasites on society and contribute nothing to it.
@RalphCramden   Bull crap....90% of anarchists can't agree what it means to be an anarchist; it's just a social club with its own clothing and music like PUNK or GOTH or METAL.  The media and the police hype these "organizations" to generate a buzz and a fear but they never define them....Anarchists are the social variable "X" that is used to generate fear in the media and justify aggressive police response. Many groups wear black and they are all tagged by the ignorant media as "anarchists".  I've actually hung around Anarchists and done significant research in social anthropology; trust me the vast majority of Anarchists are just kids....rebellious but genuinely good kids....trying to find a way in the world and most frequently confused and scared.Â
What!!!! International Day Against Police Brutality. There was know march in the city I live in, because they would have went to jail. It's nice living in a city without a bunch of liberals and a Police Dept. that actually enforces the laws, unlike Portland.
@samsloohouse lol
@samsloohouse So your city doesn't follow the US Constitution which allows not only free speech, but also peaceably assembly? Which country are you posting from?
@JTesla @samsloohouse I am posting from the US of A.  It follows the US Constitution, but also requires permits for any type of march, no permit you go to jail. They actually enforce the laws and City Ordinances.Â
@lumberghfukder @samsloohouse @JTeslaI tried to figure out the other day what town he lived in based on some "stuff" he was saying.  I finally figured out it might be best to first ascertain if it's even on this planet.  I love it when people brag about how they left Portland, blah, blah.  It must make them feel better to have strangers on a forum think they left voluntarily and that it was unrelated to any restraining orders, bad debts or an overwhelming desire to avoid paying child support. Â
@lumberghfukder @samsloohouse @JTesla I live  in Sugar Tits South Carolina.
@lumberghfukder lolriaiewhsgwed
(laughing out loud, ralf is amusing :-) i enjoy watching his senility get worse each day)
@JTesla  Â
JT you can bet that @samsloohouse  is very selective of the things that he would march against without a permit and stand on his inalienable right to assemble and that would be guns.
 Here is an interesting idea; how about if all the liberal politicians decided that any gun show was a public assembly with a political agenda and simply required that a public assembly permit then when the gun show requested the permit the politicians could simply deny it and when the gun show proceeded without a permit it would be an illegal assembly and the police could be sent in and all those people could be held for bringing guns to an illegal assembly and charged with felonies.
Of course, I would never support such a blatant attack on civil rights but I defend all the civil rights of all people regardless if I agree with their message or not.  Because I believe that is what Americans do.Â
@RalphCramden No permit needed to walk on the sidewalk, as is pointed out in the article.
@RalphCramden @lumberghfukder @samsloohouse @JTesla The mayor confirmed it on camera.  This was permitted by the city.
@lumberghfukder @samsloohouse @JTeslaÂ
There was no permit for this protest/march. It was clearly illegal.
@samsloohouse Wrong. First the Constitution doesn't grant the right of peaceable assembly only with permits. Second, permits are required to use streets, not sidewalks as these clowns are. They don't need a permit to walk on the sidewalk. If your city would stop people from walking down the sidewalk just because they have a stupid opinion, then your city would be violating the Constitution.
@samsloohouse @JTesla This was a permitted demonstration.  Where do you live? Â
