Medical examiner: Fairview girl drowned; death ruled homicide
FAIRVIEW, Ore. – The state medical examiner ruled a 10-year-old Fairview girl's death a homicide.
Miranda Crockett drowned on Nov. 24, according to Dr. Larry Lewman.
Crockett died at the King's Garden Apartments on NE 207th.
Police arrested Chandra Ilene Rose, 34, in connection with the case on Nov. 26.
Rose is the girlfriend of Crockett's father and has three children of her own. The children were placed in protective custody.
Rose is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19. She faces charges of criminal mistreatment and reckless endangerment.
A judge sealed court documents that outline why Rose was arrested in connection with Crockett's death during Rose's first court appearance and raised her bail from $12,000 to $100,000.
Joel Meyer, whose wife organized a vigil for Miranda Crockett, said the news that Crockett's death was a homicide didn't surprise him.
"Someone goes to jail and there's questions not being answered," Meyer said. "And there's stuff being held back and people maybe not being honest. I mean, someone's dead, something happened. So a homicide, I never really thought anything else."
Police said Crockett’s father was not at home when his daughter died.
On Wednesday, a neighbor told KATU News that her father moved out of the neighborhood.
Neighbors said Miranda Crocket was a playful girl who was well-known around the apartment complex.
"She played with my kids," said Angela, a neighbor who didn't give her last name. "She was a beautiful girl. She loved to be outside and play. She liked to sing and ride her bike. She would always smile and never let anything get her down."
"She was so sweet and full of emotion and full of love," said Meyer. "She would always be the first one to go help a kid that fell down. She just had a big, bright life while she was here and that's how I'm going to remember her."
KATU's Lincoln Graves contributed to this story.
I wanted to add something.. First, my heart is touched by the people of Portland/Fairview.. I know Daniel is touched by all you caring folks.
My concern is if Chandra's son DID play a part of this, he needs to be held accountable..or guilt will drive him to drugs/alcohol to kill the guilt, eventually destroying him as well. Vengence will not bring back my granddaughter..
I speak for myself.. Daniel is still dealing with his grief.. Rightly so.
Apparently, Chandra's way of disipline... likely the way she was raised.. Well, went to far...
Thanks again for caring.

@G. Crockett Please accept my heartfelt condolences to both you and especially your son. The loss of a child is something no parent should ever have to bear. You will both be in my prayers.
Rose looks like a she's on something in the picture. She sure doesn't look remorseful. It's a damn dirty shame that Miranda was taken a such a young age. I pray for the strength of the LORD to help her family and friends through these tragic days. R.I.P. Miranda.
There have been times when a child was killed to cover another crime. Could the teen son of the accused have harmed the child & mom found out?
Couldn't have been easy to drown a child this size inside of an apartment. Can't imagine what she must have went through. RIP Sweet Angel.
...pretty little girl... sweet smile... what could she possibly have done that earned her this fate..? Â Rest in peace, Miranda; your pain is over now... Â
@margay1  The answer to your question is "Absolutely NOTHING!!"  No child can do ANYTHING that earns them a fate of being murdered, just as no adult can do anything that gets them murdered.  Her last moments in this world were terrifying.  This should not have happened and I hope that the District Attorney goes for the most severe punishment possible.  This child deserves to be alive, but she isn't.  The least we can do is seek Justice in her honor.

@Ely  @margay1 I think the original question was rhetorical and was in no way intended to imply that this poor child was responsible for what happened to her.
I wondered about this one. They arrested the mom, but the father of the girl killed thinks she is covering for her teenage son. I just hope the right person gets locked up forever!
@pdxmom ~ I agree with Lee... if someone else can be proven to have known about this crime, knew who did it, and covered up for that person, they are as guilty as the person who committed the crime... "aiding and abetting"... "obstruction of justice"...Â
Â
I agree with you, though... I hope they get the guilty person/people...! Â Â
@pdxmom To me Covering, is the same thing as harboring a felon. Should the son be guilty, may he find the painful end of the gavel as well.
how could anyone kill a child?!!
@LostSoul ~  No problem, I think, for a person who has no soul (conscience)... aka: sociopath... Â
How heart wrenching and sad. A beautiful little girl died for no reason. Senseless and horrific. As a community we mourn the loss of this child and our hearts ache. I hope the other children are safe and can be placed in homes that will love them and nurture them.

If found guilty, no punishment will be enough to a monster capable of taking a child's life. There really is evil in this world and it's heart breaking when a young person is it's victim.
