Memorial Day events honoring fallen veterans

PORTLAND, Ore. -- People will gather to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country this Memorial Day.

Willamette National Cemetery will hold its annual remembrance to honor fallen soldiers. It starts at 10 a.m. at the cemetery on 11800 Southeast Mt. Scott Blvd. It will hold a moment of silence at 3 p.m.

In Washington County, the ceremony will dedicate a paving stone to Army Specialist John Pelham, who was killed last February while serving in Afghanistan. The service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Veteran's Memorial Gateway at the Washington County Fair Complex. Speakers include Brigadier General John S. Kern and Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey.

Vancouver's Community Military Appreciation Committee will hold its service at 11 a.m. at the Vancouver Barracks on the Fort Vancouver Historic Site. That's at 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd. Speakers include Col. Richard Wedan, who commands the 142nd Fighter Wing in Portland, as well as Rep. Jaime Herrera-Beutler.

The Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs will hold a public ceremony at 3 p.m. at 700 Summer Street Northeast in Salem. During the ceremony, the names of Spc. Pelham and Private Cody Patterson will be added to the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial. Patterson is from Philomath and like Pelham, died while serving in Afghanistan. Sen. Jeff Merkley will deliver the keynote address.
