PORTLAND, Ore. – A soldier from Mill City, Ore. has died from injuries he received in Afghanistan after his unit was attacked, according to the U.S. Army.
Spc. Nickolas S. Welch, 26, died Tuesday in Bethesda, Md. His unit was attacked July 23 by enemy forces with an improvised explosive device in Soltan Kheyl, Wardak Province, Afghanistan, the Army said.
Friends say shrapnel from the bomb entered his brain.
He was on his first deployment and joined the Army in August 2010. He arrived at his unit, the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, in December 2010. It is based at Fort Stewart, Ga.
He was a fire support specialist. Among his awards include the Purple Heart, the Army said.
