Missing dog that escaped car crash found safe
PORTLAND, Ore. – Rico, the missing 6-year-old Yorkie that escaped a car crash Saturday night, is back with his owner.
Connie Petersen saw Rico at the corner of her driveway on Peninsular Avenue Monday morning. She said she lured him over, got his collar tag and called his owner, Nicole Weir.
"We tried to get him to come to us. He was afraid," said Petersen. "She rang the doorbell, she saw him, burst into tears."
Weir said Rico was alone in her parked car when a suspected drunk driver crashed into it Saturday night. Rico escaped the crash, but he was nowhere to be found.
Weir said Rico was spotted several times since Saturday night, including near Jefferson High School in North Portland.
Rico seemed to be limping, so Weir took him to a vet.
"I wish he could tell me what he's been through," said Weir. "I've been so worried and scared he would get hurt before I could find him. This is amazing."

Awesome awesome story.. Mom and doggy back home. i know that had she not contacted News, she would not have found her dog. Please know that as a dog owner, I would have been nuts looking for my dog who has saved our lives with medical alerts. Rico you are special and much loved.
Rico and mom together again. He's not just a dog, he's family and family always finds a way to get home. Good luck to you both.
There is nothing stronger than the bond between a dog and their owner!! I know, a child and his/her parents, but the dog in the family will always come first unless they take it to the pound. I miss my Silky Terrier every single day and even my purebred Burmese cat will never replace the total commitment my dog had for me and me for him!!
 @boned You are so very right. Kids will talk to a dog when unhappy but not the parent, and they need that too.
finally!! something on the news that made me tear up happily!!
Yahoo! I'm SOOO happy for Rico and Rico's mom. Thank goodness he was is a crate to start with. Thank you to everyone who looked for the little pooch. Woot woot!
Thatsa gooood boy....!!!!! He just went on a walk-about.....
Awww yay! good pup!
Yay! I just love happy endings! Rico is adorable!
Outstanding!
I am so very happy that this little guy has been found and reunited with his momma! They've all been in my thoughts and prayers!
Oh I am so glad that he's home safe again! Poor little guy!
@Kaelha .......did you ever live in Sacto?
What a great uplifting story to report. Glad he's been re-united. Beats all the gloom and doom that's been happening.
The dog was found HOW FAR from the wreck scene?
YEA RICO !
To me losing a pet would be the same as losing a child.I'm so glad this story has a happy ending.
Poor dog, although he likes chasing birds, I am glad he was found safe.
this is wonderful. stories like this put me on such a rollercoaster ride. i even asked my personal psychic if she knew rico was ok. she was right!
 @Phuzz Beat those 50/50 odds!
Â
Yes!
A happy ending! Â Welcome home Rico! :)
 @eyeonchina As I've said before....LOVE happy endings!
So glad he was found safe and sound. What a cutie! And yet we have one more reason to not leave your furkids alone in a car. :)
 @ChristiTunes Cars aren't unsafe -- especially if your animal is used to being crated PROVIDED that you take the weather and other factors into consideration.  I know of several veterinarians who "crate" their dogs in their SUVs and pick ups.
 @ChristiTunes I guess I should add that it's how you chose to use the vehicle that might make it more unsafe than a crate or other restraint system.
I couldn't be any happier!
 @R. Gess Smith  And, I'm imagining, nor any less, correct?
 @Gravity Works! I think you're incorrect. It seems to me that that poster could of course be less happy: like if the dog hadn't been found.
Nice :-)!
Why was Rico alone in a parked car?
 @jpk It's a dog, not a baby.
 @jpk You've never left your dog alone in a car while you ran into the store (or wherever)?
Nope! But then I don't have a doggie!
 @jpk He was on his way to bi-mart...had to stop and make a call.
Rico lie
I'm a very proud pet owner but I have to say the coverage we give to pets in this town is getting ridiculous. I don't need a headline every time a pet goes missing or is lost in a fire. Have you found my escaped hamster from 25 years ago, maybe you can write an article to help get him returned?
 @PhillyBuster I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your hamster is no longer among the living.
 @PhillyBuster They don't carry every lost dog story. Recently a service dog (in training) was lost. None of the stations would carry it. The dog was killed by a car and found in a ditch. If word had been out, at least the person who hit it might have known who to call.Â
 @PhillyBuster One of the most rewarding days of my life was just this last summer when I found a lost black lab while on my walk. We called the number on his tags and they gave us an address about a mile away. Jake the amazing black lab and I walked the mile and it was the wrong address. More phone calls between my son and animal control resulted in finding Jake's neighbor at his new house, about 10 miles away. We happily spent our morning with Jakey, sitting on the curb with my arm around him waiting for his ride. Reuniting Jakey with his dad turned out to be hours, but hours well spent and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
 @PhillyBuster ^^^You got served.
 @PhillyBuster  Soooo quit reading/watching the news. Your problem with it is solved.
 @PhillyBuster ~  Hey, just my take on it, but I'd sure rather see pics of, and news about, pets than all the nasty stuff about thieves, murderers, people beating each other up (and worse)... and all these politicians running their mouths while they run the country into the ground...Â
We've had MORE than enough sad, tragic news lately... stories with happy endings are a VERY welcome change..!Â
 @PhillyBuster You don't have to read the stories, and the headlines probably take a half second to ignore, so what's the problem?
 @PhillyBuster It's just so nice to see good news. For most people anyway.
@PhillyBuster So what news story that was missed should have been covered?
@PhillyBuster Mass media has the potential to reach a very large audience. Working together we can accomplish things.  Like getting a pet back to its rightful owner. Not a really big deal but then again not much to ask of a local news source.Â
