Small earthquake shakes SW Washington
AMBOY, Wash. – A small earthquake centered in Southwest Washington was felt as far away as Beaverton and Estacada, Ore. Wednesday evening.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The earthquake struck at 5:03 p.m. and was centered about one mile northeast of Amboy, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Many people in Oregon and Washington called KATU News to report feeling the earthquake. Oregon viewers reported shaking from Beaverton to Estacada.
A map from the USGS shows people in Southwest Washington felt "light" shaking, while some people in the Portland area felt "weak" shaking.
The earthquake was reported to be a 3.7 magnitude.
Vancouver residents Lisa and Randy Packard said the earthquake was "very forceful" and lasted about eight seconds. Some things on their counter were shaken and turned around.
Joy Plumber of Eagle Creek, Ore. said she "felt her couch shake pretty good."
Krissy Barber in Gresham said it felt like everyone in her apartment building slammed their doors in unison.
"The couch I was on continued to shake for several seconds," she said.
According to USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu, about 1,000 people reported feeling the quake on its website. He said because the quake happened only a few miles (4 miles or 7.6 kilometers) beneath the surface, it could be widely felt.
"So technically, 7 kilometers is a very, very shallow, very close to the surface (in geological terms) … which is the reason why we're having that many people feeling the effects the quake," he said.
He said the amount of damage that is done by an earthquake depends on how much surface shaking occurs and the distance from the quake's epicenter.
I felt it, but didn't know it was an earthquake. Our apartment building is built so cheaply that I thought someone was just making a lot of noise upstairs.
Man, I'd like to feel one at some point. I've lived through tornadoes, a hurricane, floods, a landslide, and a huge hail storm - but never an earthquake. Nothing devastating, of course, just a little shaker - that would be cool.Â
I live in right to the North East of Amboy about 2 miles outside of town. The concrete in our garage has about 8 new cracks in it in different directions, other than that there was some pretty severe shaking that scared the kids. Our cats stayed by the front door and wouldn't move.
the golden corral buffet special attracted too many people over the fault line

Rock and roll everyone. Â Get ready for the Big one.
Didn't feel a thing.

It seems that there have been 2 a 3.7 and a 2.6
Looks like time for the USGS to start looking for fault lines in this region.
We didn't feel it but our dog and my self were effected by the" P" or "Pressure" waves. Meaning that when a quake hits i get the case of Vertigo, my dog, just wines and wines and wines . He also laid down. I had a headache around this time..which was weird...
 @lee986321 JSYK, your dog probably should lay off the wine. Â
I felt it in Clackamas .. my bed shook and closet rattled...i was like WTF .. my 1st time feeling a quake
Felt it at Gresham, OR
We didn't feel anything here thankfully.
Â
I'm on the Oregon Coast and dread the day we have our big quake. There have been several in Yachats and Coos Bay the last few days.
Â
I hope this isn't the "calm before the storm" type of thing.
My cats slept thru it so guess they didn't feel anything.
I've heard the earthquake described as "violent" & "Very forceful" where do I go to ban assault earthquakes?
Just kidding, sort of...
I can't figure out how I missed it. I live near 78th and St Johns. My daughter in Oklahoma texted me about it. Odd.
Me either! I live off Andresen near the mall in Walnut Grove, and while people reported feeling it at the mall, I felt nothing. Was just sitting on my couch with my sleeping cats. Neither of them stirred and nothing moved.
 @pianistnana Your down road from me. I'm in area behind Gaiser Middle School. My family and I were at dinner. It was very noticeable. The shake and the noise because of it.
You're*
I live on a hill in Hazel Dell and when my floor started rolling, it was a small earthquake having been through many earthquakes while overseas. Got enough 'cracks' in the house, a few more will be OK...
 @boned The big hill near Legends!? :P
 @Liberty4_WA  @boned That's where I live!
I knew I felt something!  I used to live in so  cal and moved to here to get away from that! We have been here 18 years. And the last one we experienced in Cali was the one where the freeway overpass went by by!
 @tinydancer57 If they don't get that Interstate Bridge replaced.. when we do get a major one.. that is gonna be the first to go probably...
@Liberty4_WA yup, steel truss bridges never really fare all that well in large earthquakes due to being far too rigid.
They could probably save some trouble by building some docks nearby that would work with a barge and then ferry people/equipment across... I know in previous earthquake exercises they have used small barges to ferry police/fire personnel and equipment across the Willamette River. Maybe the idea should be expanded a bit.
About one mile from beautiful downtown Amboy. Just walked into my room, there was a kind of hard shudder, a LOUD jolt, then more intense movement for about 5-6 seconds.  Felt like the ground under the house had just split open. The dog went nuts barking.  With the big jolt and loud noise, at first I thought  a 100+foot tree had fallen on the house. Then thought if it wasn't an earthquake, it sounded like a neighbors house had just exploded.  Haven't had a shot of adrenaline like that since the last time I jumped out of an airplane!
 @Tori 306 good description. Thx
I live about 3 miles from Amboy and my Roosters were crowing like crazy! Â And at first I thought my son was kicking the walls ! Â Then realized what it was as it got louder and stronger!
 @Dawn Rasmussen what a crazy thing huh? we all thought perhaps it was truck hitting the house or something... crazy roosters gone mad.... what a ruckus ! glad everyone ok...
Â
I was on the toilet in the middle of a very epic battle with myself and all of a sudden the house started shaking. I've never laughed so hard in my life.Â
 @Victor Phan really?
 @Victor Phan u jus made my night lmao
 @Victor Phan Holy crap. Best post ever!
 @Victor PhanÂ
Ummm, are you admitting you were the cause of the earthquake?
 @Victor Phan Sure you didn't pass some gas?
 @Victor Phan BAHAHAHA!!!
 @Victor Phan lmfao
I never feel them lol. Makes me wonder if when it happens here in Portland will it even wake me up lol.
I live in Yacolt and my dog first got up and started barking before the rumble of the earthquake. It lasted probably 8 seconds or so. Since I live near Mt St Helen's I suspected it was an earthquake. I called my neighbors just to make sure it just wasn't just under my house. We had a good laugh and he confirmed that he went out to their back deck to see what it could have been. A few minutes later he called me back and said Amboy was on the news......
 I live 1 mile West of Amboy ans it felt like a huge truck smashed into my house. It was very loud and very short like an explosion.

 @GreginAmboy Glad you are ok. Did the quake feel like a roller going under you? That's how I remember one....like rolling waves.Â

We had a 5.3 earthquake yesterday off of the coast but no mention in the news!
 @portlandborn83  It was on here earlier. It just got moved way down.
Â
Thanks for the link.
@portlandborn83 What a nifty website!
@portlandborn83 I did! Wow, that is a great site to go to.
We felt it out here in Washougal also.
