Mom who killed son, 4, because she thought he was gay sentenced to minimum of 25 years
Jessica Dutro listens during her trial Wednesday. A jury found her guilty of beating her son to death.

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A mother who apparently beat her 4-year-old son to death because she thought he would be gay was sentenced Friday to a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Jessica Dutro was convicted of murder April 3 by a Washington County jury. She will be eligible for parole after 25 years, but could be locked up the rest of her life.

Prosecutors say Dutro abused, tortured and ultimately killed Zachary in August 2012 while living with her boyfriend, Brian Canady, and three other kids at a shelter in Tigard.

Canady was sentenced to 12-1/2 years in prison for his role in the killing.

Both Dutro and Canady declined to speak at their sentencing hearing.

Court documents show a string of Facebook messages where investigators believe Dutro wrote her boyfriend how Zachary "walks and talks" in a homosexual way.
