Mother warns of dangers of detergent pods after son gets sick
HILLSBORO, Ore. – One mother says she had no idea just how dangerous those little detergent packets could be until her little boy was poisoned.
Julia Low's one and a half year old son, Kai, is home from the hospital after becoming violently ill for hours Sunday.
Low said she had no idea how highly concentrated those packets were in comparison to regular powder or liquid detergent.
The detergent pods are newer products and are not on some parents' radar, and the bright, colorful squishy gel packets are tempting for curious kids.
Low said Kai is always into everything, which is why she keeps her cleaning supplies out of reach.
But she said her son was at his grandmother's home Sunday when he got one of the packets in his mouth. She pulled it out quickly but not before he bit in and swallowed some of that highly concentrated detergent chemical, causing him to vomit every few minutes for the next hour and a half.
"He was vomiting, and it was very bubbly and there was some blood in his vomit. And he just went really lethargic. And it was really scary," Low said. "I was in shock. I really didn't know what was going on or the severity of it."
Low said her son didn't even swallow the entire packet.
"He just bit into it and just the small amount of liquid went into his mouth, and it was enough to cause that much reaction," she said.
In addition to being highly concentrated, the plastic seal on the packet dissolves with even a little bit of saliva. So it only takes a second for that chemical to shoot down the throat and into the lungs.
Kai had to stay in the hospital for most of the day while doctors monitored his progress. He was in much better spirits Monday but he still had a stomachache and didn't sleep all of the night.
He'll have a follow-up checkup to make sure there isn't any damage to his lungs and throat. That is one of the problems with the concentrated detergent packets. It has burned the lungs and throat of other children and some children have been placed on ventilators for days.
If you think your child may have swallowed some of a laundry or dish detergent pod, you need to call poison control immediately.

Gosh, it's amazing that most of us survived a childhood without door latches, outlet covers, seatbelts, child car seats. It seems that with all the "things" invented to keed kids safe, it has caused parents to rely on everything but themselves to keep kids out of danger and learning the meaning of the word "no".Â
@Kachina Well said! I guess we had super bad parents too! I got my hands slapped when I didn't obey the word no! Goodness, no one is perfect regardless..
Â
Mom warns of "dangers" of detergent pods?Â
Â
Come on - how does that make any sesne - when all this is - is another instance of a parent not supervising a child who is too young to discern bleach from water, detergent pods from whatever other substance like a detergent pod that this mother surmisses kids put in their mouths all the time.Â
Â
Come on, Mom - you were asleep at the wheel. No way did the detergent pod do anything to you kid. You failed to properly supervise your child. That's all.Â
Â
Warn us all about that - no way.Â
Exactly!!
rename the headline, "the dangers of bad parenting"
@iamright555 Yep
All things like this one,and all cleaning supplys need to be put up and out of sight. Safety locks are alright, but I have seen little hands get them open, also. Keep them up and out of sight!
@Jennifer Hamlet Like the jug of bleach and the bottle of meds - so should any and all detergents be put up and away from the reach of young children. What was this parent doing - warning us all - that she was not competently supervising her own child perhap? And what is KATU doing - running with this story. Come on...
Low said her son didn't even "shallow" the "whole" packet. No.... but he obviously "downed" enough to get him sick. Should he have eaten the WHOLE packet all before got him sick. Come on folks this is detergent.
The article also says "If you think your child may have swallowed some of a laundry or dish detergent pod, you need to call poison control immediately. WELLÂ If you think your child may have swallowed some of a laundry or dish detergent pod, you need to call your mental health doctor and get your screws tightened for leaving it in your 1 1/2 year olds reach. Now go get your morning latte and doughnut and be good humans.Â
Also I think that is a rice seal, much like the rice candy wrappings.
AND DON"T FORGET THEM BATTERIES! AAA are easily downed as well.
Were getting safety locks this month to avoid this very thing.. and were getting them door Knob covers as well. and were throwing in Plug in Locks as well. those are the locks that cover the plug ins so that the child can not unplug the plugs or get zapped with a half in and half out. plug.
@lee986321 lee - and you did not put lock on any cupboards when you brought home your child? Really..
Â
Just now - with the story being published about what is really just negligent parenting - you decide the time is now - to finally safeguard your house?Â
Â
Tell me your child is only a month or two old, please. Don't tell me he or she is four or five or whatever. And just now... because of this.... you are acting responsibly.Â
@lee986321 nice tips and good on you! if you got a climber, then you're in for a treat. a lot of these things happen because parents are not watching the child. or the babysitter and grandparents are too slow to remember how fast little ones really are. toddlers are a 24/7/365 job. so drink your morning latte! (for me that was serious actually). mine just strted unlatching the screen door and seeing if he can breathe underwater. you also need anti-slip treats in the tub if not already, and dont teach them to use chairs to climb higher where you store your things.
@lee986321 Those are a good idea as well! Got those to get, most of the plugs and pug in's here are behind furniture where it has to be moved to access the plug/plugins.
Did grandmom have these in a candy dish, or should the headline have been "make sure that you have locks on your cleaning-supply cabinets if you have toddlers in the house" ...?
Hmm... I hadn't noticed these before... haven't had any little kids around for years, but one of my kitties LOVES to open paper or plastic bags ~ Â and she has very sharp claws and teeth..! Â Â She doesn't necessarily want to eat what's inside the bag; she just thinks they're her toys...so anything in a bag like that gets put away where she can't get to it..! Â Â
@margay1 Your kitties are lucky indeed, margay. Would that every pet owner were as responsible as you.
This also why one should install those locks on the cabinet doors! That way the baby's don't get into this stuff!
@Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu Safety locks on cupboards - no kidding. Like when you bring your child home from the hospital - not just when you discover some new laundry product - years later and your kids is into "experimenting" because you leave them out in the open? Perhap - don't you all think - this mom wasn't "thinking" - a whole lot.Â
Â
Yup.Â
@englishdaisy This happened at the grandma's home..  It is up to granny to take care of her cupboards and sockets. Yeah, mom needs to help out there. No matter how much you keep a eye on them, they still do things before you can get to them. So that is a yes & no..    Kids are often quicker then adults - something to keep in mind! We are not perfect!Â
@Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu and boy can they climb lol, technically there toddlers, Not babies.
@lee986321 Even the crawlers get into everything they can reach..  The grandson is rolling over and reaching for things already.  And it goes directly in the mouth..  I already have door gates! The next step is the latch's to be installed and the step stools put up! Â
Â
I still remember when mine when little though and the things they would get into.. onto and upto.. lol!
no bueno
So glad that this little boy is going to be okay. Â Â I use those all the time and yes they are very dangerous, they also have a very lengthy caution/warning statement on the package. Â Â
@stoneloc  Exactly. Manufacturing companies put warning labels on things, because they can not be everywhere monitoring people.
This is just another sign the US has really stupid population.
