GRESHAM, Ore. – A motorcyclist was hit at the intersection of Northeast 181st Avenue and Glisan Thursday evening.

The crash happened in front of a Gresham police station at about 5:30 p.m.

Police confirmed that the man hit was an off-duty Troutdale police officer. His name has not been released.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries police said.

Witnesses described a horrific crash.

“He flew 50 feet – helmet in three pieces,” one witness told KATU. "I ran up to help. He told me he was a police officer. ... Said he couldn't feel his legs."

The motorcycle appeared to be his personal one.

According to police, a SUV was traveling southbound on 181st and began to make a left-hand turn into a parking lot and hit the motorcyclist who was going north bound from Glisan.

Police said the driver is being cooperative, and they don't believe alcohol or speed was a factor in crash.

The motorcyclist was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
