Sure hope they can open early. Being involved in a buisness that is at the mercy of natures whims has got to be nerve wracking. (Did it snow enough to open today? Damn, the news said it is raining at pass levels. I don't get to work today).
I used to skiing in the early 90's when it was affordable to go for the day. now the prices are ridiculous. the season pass was 200 dollars and if you had a group of 4 it was a hundred a piece. just like anything else greed takes over now the price is 524 dollars per person. the last trip I went with my son at timberline the price was a hundred dollars per person for lift and rental. the other rule that these ski resorts need to apply if two skiers collide which happens that they can not sue each other. how things have changed
If that family was planning to ski, I find it odd that they didn't check the website before leaving home. Obviously there hasn't been a lot of snow yet!
I worked at Ski Bowl for years part time for the free skiing. Lots of fun but hard to make a living at it.

I agree, I for one can't afford to waste gas like that. Doesn't cost much to check before leaving.
