New plan unveiled to help Oregon prepare for 'the big one'

PORTLAND, Ore. – While most of us looked in horror at the images from the devastating Japan tsunami two years ago, Jay Wilson saw a harbinger of what will come to Oregon.
“Devastation, the unimaginable images they were capturing over there - sooner or later are going to become a reality,” Wilson said.
Wilson is one of more than 100 volunteers behind the Oregon Resilience Plan, a massive report that explains the stark realities we face living in quake country. The plan is a guidebook for state lawmakers, who will be in charge of completing recommendations set forth in the plan, like investing money to strengthen Oregon’s infrastructure.
The Legislature will be briefed on the plan later this week.
According to the report’s worst-case scenarios, 10,000 Oregonians could be killed by a big earthquake, and the timetables to restore basic services are staggering:
- Electricity: 1-3 months
- Police and fire stations: 2-4 months
- Major roadways reopened: 6-12 months
- Hospitals reopen: Up to 18 months
“The most fundamental aspects of our society we take for granted can all just be broken and taken away,” said Wilson.
Despite the devastation in Japan, the deep earthquake history there makes communities more prepared. We don’t have that history here, so the hope is that the Oregon Resilience Plan is enough to convince all of us to get ready.
“We haven’t had enough earthquakes to make us do the work,” Wilson said. “If we wait for the big one to happen, it’s too late.”
I'll say my goodbyes now because, if a big one does hit, I'm a goner. Living in an over 100 year old home guarantees me to be squashed like a grape being made into wine. What can I say? I like living on the edge...of insanity. Heck, we still have some damage (minor) from the Spring Break quake. Just a few cracks in places that aren't visible..especially when you hang a picture over it. So please remember me fondly. ;)
When the big one hits, remove all sharp objects from your pockets, place your head firmly between your legs, and kiss your @ $ $ good bye, because you will be on your own and have to fend for yourselves. Expect no help. I doubt that very much would remain standing after a prolonged 9.5 shaker, with 7.+ aftershocks.
I remember schools plan to save us in e 60's from Soviet A bombs. Â Crawl under desks when the siren sounded.
@Ramona Yea I remember crawling under a desk and with the threat of a nuclear bomb coming was like asking me to hide under a pile of kindling and wait for the fire storm...
Boy That brings back happy thoughts...Â
19,000 people died in japan march 2011 and two years later 300,000 are still displaced. Looks like it will be a very long recovery when the BIG ONE hits.
I'll go to Winco on a Sunday at noon right after the first of the month! I aint scured ! Bring it quake!

@Welfair Chick So like all the other guys said ...
How much is this going to cost me??
You Oregon folk live in a fantasy world.. They can't even build a new bridge (CRC), how are they going to do all this in the time frame mentioned. Remember you live in The City That Works.Â
Portland sits on several fault lines and I do believe (based on statistics) we are way over due for a large earthquake. Â Its going to happen but who knows when. Â But all our bridges are toast if it does hit, especially with it centered around downtown.
Guess I better get a generator for my well. Â
@From the OCÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Generators are fine for a couple days, but if power is out gas stations can't pump.
@Just say'n @From the OC He's going to use the generator to power an oil rig in his backyard. He'll refine it in his garage and store it in Mason jars in his crawlspace.
@HenryBowman @Just say'n @From the OC Well I will do like Gilligan and find me professorÂ
Went to visit my brother in Feb '71, just in time for the Sylmar/Pacoima quake in CA it was a 6.6, major damage, very hard to get around with roads and bridges damaged. Then was in Los Gatos for the Loma Prieta quake in 89, it was a 6.9, major damage in the bay area. I'm not a doomsdayer, but realistically it could happen here. It does not take a lot of money or storage to keep enough rice, beans, grains and powdered milk on hand for an emergency. Also a water purifier (backpacking style) you might be glad there's so many rivers here. Water and gas lines are the first to go.
wanna bet some lunatic up there is Salem gonna propose an earthquake tax...
I have some nice government funded solar panels so I will have some electricity.
Don't need fire or police. My wife and I know how to take care of the things they provide. We have a sprinkler system that can be converted to run on rain water, we are trained in medical with plenty of supplies, and we can protect ourselves as needed.
I have a tractor, 2 four wheelers and a very rugged 4x4.
Hospitals are not needed for us. My wife and I are very healthy. We can also help others in need of medical care on a limited basis.
The folks that will be in trouble are those that are so dependent on government for everything that they cant function without them.
@RalphCramden I hoep that you're prepared to get overrun by the "have-nots".  There will probably be a lot of that going on. Keep the ammo dry.
@RalphCramden People who are dependent on government are too poor to be ready for any disaster. in a magnitude 9 earthquake your vehicles won't do you any good other than shelter. the only way to flee afterwards  in some areas will be via Helicopter.
@32jim2Â @RalphCramden People that are dependent on government are screwed either way. The only question is if those of us that are not dependent upon government will be destroyed by those that are.
@32jim2
My 4 wheelers will get me most places. Plus my tractors can help clear out the roads and make them drivable so some extent. It's not a huge tractor but it is better than a guy with a shovel.
@Nobody @32jim2Â
I have batteries.
Gas is a problem for sure and I have several mountain bicycles with lots of extra tubes, tires and patch kits for that very reason.
@RalphCramden @32jim2 How much gasoline do you have stashed away? All those things that run on gas have a very limited usefulness once the gas station power goes out and the delivery routes are destroyed. Oh, and all those solar panels people have that feed power back to the grid won't do them any good unless they have a separate battery pack (and a big one at that). Most solar systems require the power grid reference for cycle rate.
Shoot! I read the story headline and saw the bridge; I thought we were talking about another big bridge!
Instructions for the "Big One": Â Bend over and kiss your A S S goodbye. End of instructions for the big one. This has been a public service announcement.
In case you KATU Deep Thinkers did not read the Oregon Resilience Plan, I'll summarize the 341 page plan for you:Â
It's not looking good....And no guns to protect ourselves from looters.. AWESOME! lol.
@Newsin I don't remember seeing anything about not being able to own guns...did I miss something?
@deejm2112@NewsinCheck out House Bill 3200:
http://www.leg.state.or.us/13reg/measpdf/hb3200.dir/hb3200.intro.pdf
Pay special attention to Section 2 Subsection C Part IV where any modern semiautomatic pistol becomes illegal in the State of Oregon.

@Welfair Chick @deejm2112 You have to wrap a towel around your head for the Psychic Powers thingy to work...
We should probably have Diane Feinstein introduce legislation banning earthquakes

are you on drugs?
@Nuclear-XÂ Â Pretty sure it's sarcasm.
@feral @Todd Scofield  That's "for THEIR greater good"! And both have made some of the dumbest statements ever given by a politician...Actually, we are copying China when they had the GREAT REVOLUTION...All learned educated people either were put to death or assigned to hard labor in the fields, while the uneducated marginally intelligent were promoted to run the government...AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE HAVE RUNNING OUR GOVERNMENT!
@Todd Scofield ~  Hey, that'll probably work as well as all the other stuff they keeping throwing in our faces..!   What is it with these people; they can't seem to get out of "crisis mode" for even 5 minutes..!
I'll just watch it on television here east of the mountains. Â Well, maybe not, there won't be any television coming from the valley. Â Oh well.Â
@Shadow I'm east of the mountains too....you don't have satellite?
Don't just prepare for the big one but for the coming zombie apocalypse.
@TimBurr Or the robot uprising.

@feral @TimBurr It's already happening....
If you think the "Big one will get you" you will waste your life waiting. enjoy life don't let the doomsday predictions ruin it. Besides there isn't enough money anyway.
Well...those that are prepared will be much better off than those that wait for government to come in and solve their problems.Â
I was able to get earthquake insurance for my house, but was told it all depended on how strong the earthquake was if I get anything done. That makes a lot of sense to me...
If the big one comes, I'll be lmao at all the new buildings and bridges as they will be the first ones to fall.
This is just a big farce.Â
That would be quite a bizarre reaction to a major disaster.
I don't believe this. Most of Oregon is made out of concrete which is probably way stronger than an earthquake so we'll be fine.
@Oregon7812 actually pure concrete is the absolute worst earthquake material. Look at Haiti.
@Oregon7812Â Seriously?....Most of our heads are made of concrete, but......seriously?
I think we'd have a better chance of survival if we were attacked by zombies.

@Dr. Rawdog @Justanother1 Your probably a closet anti gun guy like Mark Kelly Gabby Giffords husband. he and his wife just got back from a big anti gun rally and promotion tour to take away my gun rights.
Ironically he just got caught buying an assault rifle, semi automatic 45, and high-capacity magazines this week.
I'm sure you won't find this in any of the mainstream media since the last thing they want to do is show the giant hypocrisy by many of those who want to take your rights away at the same time they are exercising theirs.
After getting caught he came up with the lame story that he was going to give the rifle to the police but he was keeping the pistol. Ya right...only about 50%% of the population is stupid enough to believe he just bought a $2000 rifle to turn over to the police for destruction....
@Dr. Rawdog@FreedomRocksSorry those all came out after he was busted for buying it and forced to explain. I am not buying the story that someone who has purchased guns before and said he is keeping all the ones he bought here except the assault rifle did it just to prove how easy it was for the media.
The media is in on his lies because they are also run by anti gun people and it would look terrible for the anti gun crowd unless they came up and went with a good cover story.If you believe that story he came up with after getting outed then I have some great beach side property in Boise I would like to sell you...
@Dr. Rawdog Apology accepted.   I apologize in advance for shooting you in the head if you're a zombie.
@Ironclad @Mr. Carbon Footprint @Justanother1 @Dr. Rawdog Then you just have to run faster than Rawdog.
@Mr. Carbon Footprint @Justanother1 @Dr. Rawdog And when you're surrounded by Democrats- I mean, Zombies?
@Justanother1 @Dr. Rawdog Zombies? I just have to run faster than the guy behind me.
