Not much to 'Like' about political Facebook posts, many say

PORTLAND, Ore. - Obnoxious, offensive, and all over your Facebook feed – we're talking about political comments and opinions from some of your closest friends and family members that have you cutting ties with them – at least online.
One out of every five Facebook users has unfriended, blocked or hidden somebody from their newsfeed because they just can't stand seeing the sometimes pretty snarky and colorful comments, according to the Pew Research Center.
It's coming from both sides of the political aisle and many people just can't take it anymore. On KATU’s Facebook page, we asked how many people were frustrated with political posts on Facebook, and in just a couple of hours, our post received about 150 comments and 300 "Likes."
There are even Facebook pages now dedicated to cutting out the political posts on newsfeeds and even some downloads that can now help filter out your newsfeeds.
But it turns out being unfriended, blocked or hidden from someone's timeline is not really affecting the volume of posts.
So what can you do if your friend or family member is blathering on about politics and you're just sick and tired of it? We asked our social media expert, John Tierney, who is also our executive producer for KATU.com to explain the Facebook options. Watch below:
Unfortunately the brainless sheeple peasants and in some cases intelligent sheeple (even more disturbing) are unwilling to engage in critical thinking or any form of intellectual, objective appraisal of the forces controlling our world. They're so petrified of not 'fitting in' or angering the New World Order that they smugly claim doesn't exist (yet cower at the mere thought of supporting any theory challenging the status quo) that they've become unwitting and sometimes knowing adherents of the globalist religion. They're only interested in having fun and living in their own selfish little bubble of cognitive dissonance. the few sheeple-made politically oriented posts fit neatly into the globalist agenda, be it the fake green, movement and their man made global warming fraud, the anti-religion agenda, the gay marriage as a distraction agenda, their Obama worship despite the fact he's expanding war, breaking all his promises and destroying human rights...but because he's black it's OK agenda, the gun control agenda etc. Every sheeple post falls squarely into the gullible, easily manipulated category. Kony 2012 is a good example, he's a Bin Ladenesque fake enemy designed to provide a cover for the criminal murderous UN to go in and slaughter Africans to grab all the resources.
But hey why post about politics, science or what's really going on in the world when you can post pictures of your damn breakfast.
Nobody "likes" politics ESPECIALLY those of us brave enough to post a few political messages! The trick is, to post messages to create positive awareness, NOT the type that shows ignorance. Â A political "rant" lies in the eyes of the beholder, based on how enlightened an individual is. Â The fact is, politics rule our very world, Â from the food we eat, air we breath, water we drink our education system, healthcare.....everything. Politics are the ONLY reason USA is $16 trillion in debt, Â and the underlying corrupt portion of that political landscape causing this is our oppressive overbloated military industrial complex. Â The worse politically inspired rants are those that post horrific marketing slogans of our Pentagon, like "freedom isn't free" or "home of the free because of the brave". Â The deceiving, heart & soul wrenching political rants like "thank you for fighting for our country" which only shows the posters ignorance, and is a huge insult to reality. Â Someone ought to send these people some educational materials on our profitable war criminals at expense of our nation as a whole, and a lesson on true American history. Â I've unfriended these political ranters as they insult an entire next generation of children with their lack of awareness of what "Patriotism" Â or "pro-American"means, which has nothing to do with believing in our self-destructive foreign policy
I simply unchecked most of the boxes under "friend" on the pages of my politic ranting friends & family. Â I'll recheck them after the election. Â It's removed 98% of political rants from my page, and I can still stay in touch. Â I get enough political propaganda from the media, the mail, and phone calls, and I'll be VERY glad when it's over.
Facebook can be, and often is, dangerous. And for those self absorbed self centered people it's an enabler of selfishness.
If I wanted to look at your face I'd knock on your door. Screw Facebook.
Can't wait til after the election so we can go back to using Facebook for what it was intended for -- posting 15 pictures of your kid per day, bragging about where you're at on vacation, or beaten-to-death "funny" e-cards.
@Scorcho Don't forget about photos of your dinner and your pets....
I like facebook for photo albums. I could do without seeing the political posts and updates/whines of people.
I use a special Facebook browser called "Social  Fixer". It used to be "Better Facebook" but FB has issues with that. There is an add-in for most browsers. I use it in Firefox. I like it because I can push all the gaming request to separate tabs within my Facebook browser and keep my feed clean. You can also set up filters to push posts containing certain keywords to a separate tab where you never have to see them. I set up filters for the Superbowl this year and it was awesome. Anyway it's just some guy who writes code in his basement and asks for donations now and then. I find it very helpful in managing what I see in my feed. www dot socialfixer dot com
I've had some very fun debates on FB under political posts but the real problem for me is the election process is just too long, that's all we see, the debates, commercials (thank GOD Oregon is not considered a swing state, one good thing about that!), CNN, Fox, basically all news sites and social media sites, it's constant overflow of the same stuff over and over again and FB is just another overflow of political propoganda. At this point most people have it figured out. I'll be glad when it's over regardless of who wins, as long as it ends!!!
Â
Note- I was a late adopter of FB, then I realized it's a great way to keep in touch with my long distance family and friends.
I hid a couple people from my new s feed. Not because of political stuff, but because the whole news feed is full of their statuses. I don't give a shit if you just checked the mail, or just had dinner, or just had a cup o f coffee. You don't need to post your whole life on facebook.
@Hacker_i33 I don't know, that kind of information is useful to some people, such as criminals.
Gotta love the irony of the folks taking the time to make multiple posts here who "wouldn't be caught dead on Facebook".
I don't care what you had for dinner either!
Snitchbook was the worst invention of all time.   Step away from your computer and go spend quality time with your family and friends. Nothing is more impersonal and meaningless than the computer. Kids these days killing themselves over snitchbook comments, ridiculous and completely out of hand. These same kids should be outside playing, not sitting at a computer getting fat.Â
@MrAchilles ahem... how are you posting this?
@MrAchilles What are you doing at your computer typing on a news site? Get away from your computer and spend quality time with your friends and family!
I have hidden a number of my close friends from my FB feed (both ones I agree with ideologically and ones I don't). I will reinstate them after the election. I cannot take the multiple postings per hour. I use FB to keep up with friends lives, kids, etc. I am not there to discuss politics. I even told them that I am not viewing their incessant crap...if something important in YOUR life happens prior to the election...call, text or email me because I sure as hell won't find out from FB.
The majority of my feed is Atheist, politically liberal pages. The majority of my friends are liberal so we all enjoy posting funny poltical, sacreligous satire on each other's feeds.I get a lot of rightwing Christian posts from people from high school and I get a kick out of their posts.I refuse to take Facebook serious anyway.
@noneofyourbizzness Like anyone, you have a right to your beliefs or non-beliefs. Someone like me would always respect that but only if you are respectful of my opinion (and that of others). People are never going to agree 100% on everything.Â
Â
I for one, don't agree with your opinion on religion. I believe in God but, you'll never see my disrespect you for not believing, as long as you don't disrespect me.Â
What I find offensive are the posting of Sexual content or links there of, I had to unfriend a few for that.
@lee986321 What kind of "friends" to you have? I've never seen one.
I don't mind the political stuff (I just scroll on by the stuff I don't agree with). What I hate are the racist, bigoted, etc. things I see people say. After seeing a "friend" say extremely racist things about an African American politician, I finally unfriended them. I grew up in a town full of racists and left when I could. I don't need to see the stuff on my news feed. Like whatever candidate you want, but I don't need to see your hatred.
Facebook is a mess with this crap, and Christianity also! If you love Jesus, click "like".
@swimbad Get more atheist friends on facebook.
@swimbad At least Christ didn't kill any one and at least he did many good things, I challenge you this one thing, compare Jesus Christ to Today's politicians, who would you want in Office? Religion aside were talking about the man himself.
But, I disagree with the plastering Of Jesus all over the place. I am not ashamed to say I am a Christan , besides you cannot remove Christ fully any ways, to do so you must remove three important letters in the Greek alphabet the Alpha symbol, the Omega, symbol (tied in with electronics in Ohm's law) as well as the letter X winch in Greek is Christ. IXOUS you would have to eliminate all these letters as they have a religious tie with them.Â
 @lee986321  @swimbad
1- He was just quoting a bumper sticker, lighten up.
2- How many people have been killed in the name of Jesus?
 @Dirtman  @deejm2112  @lee986321  @swimbad He won't be getting any batteries for x-mas from me!
@Dirtman  @deejm2112  @lee986321  @swimbad How come every time he gets on a roll I'M the one who thinks I've had a stroke?
@deejm2112 @lee986321 @swimbad Dont stop him - he is on a roll.As to the answer for #2 - Millions!
"keyboard batteries"
Â
Â
@lee986321  @swimbad Reminds me of the bumper sticker:  "Jesus loves you, everyone else thinks your an a**hole".
@notacuntservative  @swimbad eh had to replace batteries as it was doing funky things
Â
@notacuntservative  @swimbad KATU Forum is not everyone either . I pity you though so much hate so much anger. So much rage...this goes deeper then hating Christians, I think something has happened to you that has caused you to be angry..You have your own demons to deal with.I suggest you deal with them before they "ass they say in the military "eat you up" "the Military sues the Term "Eat you Up" because that is what anger and hate does, it eats at your soul, making you blind to the good, and causing you to fail to see danger signs. It causes you to become drunk and bitter, it causes you to do irrational things with out thought. It causes you to hate with out just cause.
You may think you have your anger under control, but one of these days, it will manifest its self in a pool of puss and ill repute that even you wouldn't believe your are capable of. but go on. Blame others for Your Anger and Your bitterness, Go a head and pin what you do in word and in deed to be the fault of others.
Â
You are responsible for your own actions, you are guilty for what you have don't in thought , word and deed, You are the one responsible for that has happened to you be it after an accident, divorce, loss of a child, car accident or what ever you think is unfair.
You are at fault for whom you have injured.
Your are at fault for your own hate and anger.
@notacuntservative  @swimbad in your opinion, your not every one now are you lol
Divide and conquer!
I sincerely wish (not exclusively in the election season) that FB had a setting that would allow me to block ANY post containing the words ' Like if you....'
Â
Cant say that I've gone so far as to unfriend or block anyone, but I've done my fair share of hiding.
Since I have a life outside of social media this doesn't concern me.
@RalphCramden Hey everybody LMS if you like what I said!!
Â
It is kind of the same here as FB....with the exception of a) LiveFye sucks, and b) a bit more
anonymous here.
@RalphCramden  You spend your entire day here...which IS social media
@oh4FS The difference being on FB, folks are mostly agreeing with you, while here, they're mostly disagreeing.  That, and I don't have to see the pictures of your ugly baby here. Â
Â
Otherwise, it's just another facet of social media.
@oh4FS No, they probably never had Facebook and think they're better than anyone who uses it.
@Festivus  The difference is that the trolls like Ralph and Mr Achilles actually HAVE no friends so everyone on FB has declined or unfriended them....so....they end up here...
Really... how is this the same as Snitchbook?  You do not know where I live, who I am, what I do for a living, how many kids I have, if I believe in GOD, nothing, you have nothing on me whatsoever..  Good luck with that.
@MrAchilles You don't have to post any of that information on Facebook. You can pretty much use it without posting much biographical or information if you want to, just like you could probably post more personal information on here.
@RalphCramden You think Facebook is really fundamentally different than hanging around here?
Oh hell yes!  This forum is not even in the same ballpark. Duh.
@Festivus  @RalphCramden I hang out on both and trust me, there isn't a huge difference except you can't always post the pretty little pictures on KATU.
Nothing forces people to read the political content. They can just scroll right on by.
But I guess folks have to be offended or put off by something in order to be happy.
Â
@Jack_Bauer not really. Getting everybody's play-by-play spammed to Facebook during the debates has been ridiculous. According to half my friends, the other half are idiots for voting for one guy or the other, we're all doomed, blahdeblahblah...
