Friends, fans celebrate Obie's weight loss
PORTLAND, Ore. – Friends and fans of a famously obese dog celebrated two victories Saturday.
Obie the obese dachshund has lost 30 pounds from his once 70-pound frame.
His foster mother, Nora Vanatta, also won her months-long custody battle to keep him while she helps him lose weight. The Oregon Dachshund Rescue claimed Vanatta was exploiting the dog and not giving him proper medical care.
Saturday, Vanatta thanked Obie’s supporters at a party at Lucky Lab Brewpub in Southeast Portland.
“The local supporters got a chance to meet him and see how great he is with people and other dogs. He loves the attention and he’s a very happy, social guy,” Vanatta said.
“There’s just something about him that just won my heart,” said Peggy Scearce. “Nora is such a kind, compassionate person and you don’t see that much in this day and age.”
Go Obie!!!
I don't understand how this woman can use Obie for publicity like this. Â When he was still at his highest weight, she stuffed him in the cargo hold for a cross-country flight for a TV appearance. Â My dog is healthy and I wouldn't do that to her even in such good condition.
Â
Clearly, she is using him and does not have his best interest at heart. Â She's using him and that makes her out to be far less honorable than she portrays herself. Â I'd be curious to know what she is doing with all the left over funds she has raised for him, doubtful that they are going to a cause other than one that benifits her.
Â
She signed on as a FOSTER home, and ended up not adopting Obie through proper channels. Â At the very least she can't talk about this any more due to the agreeement in court. Â It will be too soon if she ever speaks to the public again.
 @EBee Sour grapes, much???
Are you the valley-type girl that had her 'purse puppy' on the plane the last time I flew? Really, I just wanted to slap you. And when I say slap, I mean one of those rattle-the-ears kinds of slaps.
Â
She got the dog the help it needed and the dog is enjoying life. Get over yourself.
Way to go, Obie - and Nora! You have done an awesome job!
Obie is looking toooooooo good!!!

Medical veterinary costs are sky high, Lawyers charge upwards of $200Â and hour or more.
Without "donations" those bills could not be paid. Veterinary surgery can run thousands of dollars. This Oregon Dachshund Rescue group most likely felt that that they were missing out on all those dollars and wanted to "cash" in on the fame that Obie was getting. I am a follower of Obie.The dog was so obese that many would of put him down to end his suffering. One person chose to help him and has done wonders,Yes,she needed financial backing,what other better way to get that support than to make him a Facebook page? This custody battle was all about the money and nothing but that. Greed so distorts human way of thinking, It is literally quite disgusting, Obie is where he needs to be and is on the road to recovery to be a normal healthy pooch.
The Oregon Daschund Rescue people sound unhinged. And petty. REALLY, really petty.Â
Â
They never cared about Obie. They never cared about being appreciative that a human being was caring for Obie and taking proper care of him.Â
Â
The Oregon Daschund Rescue people need to be closely watched far into the future. Just "saying" you are something does not ever blindly equate to a credible ethical agency. Oregon Daschund Rescue reps - shame on you.Â
Â
Obie and Nora Vanatta - rock on!
It looks like the foster mom is still using him for publicity.....I doubt she will need all the money that was donated to him for his care, I hope she donates some of it to a good cause after Obie's needs are met. Â She has said he will have skin reduction surgery which is good. Â It was also said that the details of the custody battle are not disclosable.. I think that means stop using him for publicity as well. Â Just let him be a normal dog.
 @Horse2020 Horse - how do you quantify "using" a pet? Ah, dude - are you aware that PET OWNERS proudly take their pet family members everywhere with them today? To restaurants, on trips, to the store, to the park, to their work place? Of course you are... that's right....
Â
Or is your mind so closed by what you perceive has been the truth spewing forth from Oregon Daschund Rescue reps - that you still cannot credit Nora Vanatta with being a good person who is in fact, day in and day out - dedicated to being the caring conscientious PET OWNER she is.Â
Â
Whether the Oregon Daschund Rescue people like any of it or not - Obie is fine. Obie is a member of a Ms. Vanatta's family now. Â Obie is healthy and loved.Â
Â

Biggest loser......... Doggy style :)
Glad tidings of Magnificent Mr. Sausage! Bravo!
Way to go!!!
Looking great, Obie!! Keep up the good work!
My dogs send their best barks and butt sniffs your way!
Obie is looking soooo good!!! Nora has done an amazing job with the wrinkly faced little hot dog. He looks so happy here. Nora is no longer his foster mom, she's his permanent human mom now.
It looks like his head is on the wrong end of his body.
 @Quaoptician There are a lot of people like that, too.
And many of those usually had their head buried in the wrong end of their bodies as well.
GO OBIE !!!!
who said you can't teach a fat dog to lose weight?
 @Phuzz Oh no.
That saying was "You can't teach an old dog Jedi Mind Tricks."
;-)
That's more weight than I have lost in the same period of time. Nora, can I move in for awhile?
I can't believe a dog has a meet and greet, or that he has fans! He'd probably just have some meat.Â
 @jpk He's a symbol of hope.
And that's a good thing.
Hope so, but right now he's a symbol of the tug of war between Nora Vanatter and the Dachshund Rescue folks.
 @Cindy B. Careful when they donate their money to the Oregon Daschund Rescue people who appear unhinged and petty minded? Perhaps. They brought all of that scrutiny upon themselves. And no one from the Oregon Daschund Rescue's ranks has credibly explained why they chose to engage in negative inflammatory actions  - against appropriately acting persons like Ms. Vanatta.Â
Â
Until they do - I guess the public has every right to cautiously steer clear of donating their dollars to Oregon Daschund Rescue.Â
The tug-o-war is done. Obie is where he needs to be. And you can bet, some people will be more careful where they donate pets or $$$.
Obie needs a bra.
 @badcat A lot of guys in Portland do as well.
Just walk around downtown on a hot day and you'll see, or at some of the local swimming spots.
Too many moobs. It's scary!
 @Mikey Moobs aren't sexy anymore? DAMMIT!
 @badcatÂ
Â
He does have a bra BC, it's called the ground. ;^)
