Police: Salem officer critically hurt after being run over by wife
SALEM, Ore. -- A Salem police officer is in critical condition after police said his wife ran him over with her pickup, police said.
Officers arrested Shirley T. Nunez, 47, of Salem on suspicion of attempted murder. Her husband, Officer Kenneth Nunez, 48, is hospitalized at Salem Hospital, according to a news release from the Oregon State Police.
Police said the investigation began just after 1 a.m. Monday, when Shirley Nunez entered a home in the 1800 block of Torrance Street in Salem and confronted a woman there about a suspected relationship between the woman and Kenneth Nunez.
Police said Shirley Nunez pointed a handgun at the woman during the confrontation and then left in a Ford F-150 pickup.
Minutes later, she allegedly hit her husband in front of the couple's home, as he was walking toward his motorcycle.
Shirley Nunez was evaluated at Salem Hospital before being booked in the Marion County Jail.
In addition to attempted murder, she's also being held on suspicion of first-degree assault, first-degree burglary, menacing, pointing a firearm at another person and unlawful use of a weapon.
Kenneth Nunez has worked for the Salem Police Department for seven years.
She's taken the "woman scorned" thing to a new level. I hope the officer survives and recovers. The best thing you can do to a cheating spouse is to divorce him, walk away, and find REAL happiness. If he WAS cheating, I guess we can see why, this lady is nuts.
Well, her a** is gra** now! She's done for--it would be bad enough if she did this to a regular joe...but her husband is a cop and everyone knows he'll be looked upon with complete favor in the legal system. Â I had a friend who worked dispatch. She told me once that 99.9% of the police have "chippies" on the side. Remember this before you marry a policeman.Â
She broke into the home? Did I hear that right ? So was she no longer living there? I dont believe either way that anyone deserves that kind of treatment even if there was infedelity , She needed to move on !
@robtan She broke into "the other woman's" home.Â
I know this family and they are in my thoughts and prayers. They have children and their lives will never be the same. Please keep them in mind when making posts about either parent. It is a horrifying situation. My heart goes out to all of the people involved.
@sunnyrae007 A few of us have not been speculating and are waiting for further developments.
I'm guessing the Honeymoon's over
If I were the other woman who was helping the husband cheat, I would high-tail it out of there and never return. In fact, I wouldn't do it in the first place.Â
Â
Whatever happened to integrity and fidelity within a marriage or other relationship? So screwed up.
@washcomom "helping the husband cheat" is quite a down play. I believe the story indicates that the woman whose house was broken into was the actual "other woman". She's lucky the scorned woman didn't kill her!
@washcomom Infidelity has been around for as long as there has been man and women.
@oodathunked  @washcomom And so has murder due to jealousy.Â
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."
 @Patriot1946 Isn't that the truth.
Â
Jeez, hasn't anyone heard of divorce?
This crazy woman should be in prison or a mental hospital and then on court ordered meds when she gets out. Does anyone seriously  think she did the right thing?
I don't know if she did the right thing. But if my wife has to run over me, then I deserve it. As I was taught since I was a teenage, husband and wife treat each other as new friends, respect and "whatever I do, I do it for you." BTW, I have been in love with my wife when I was 15, I am now 63.
At  least Shirley went after the right party....
A scorned woman during the menopausal years? He's lucky to be alive. Hope he stays that way.
The Salem PD should fire him for his non-existent moral and ethical standards. If he's willing to cheat on his wife, then he's just as likely to lie and cover up any kind of job related impropriety.
@Jamie Most of them are capable of doing just that.
@Jamie What if his wife is simply a crazy beeyatch and he only *looked* at the shapely woman walking by?!  Wait until we know something before jumping all over the guy, hunh?
@Gravity Works!  @Jamie Ummmm....he did more than look. His wife barged into the other woman's house and there was hubby.Â
@Gravity Works! That's what he'd want you to believe.
Guess his cheating days are over!
The article reads that the crazy wife suspected him of cheating. If this nut case is willing to threaten someone with a gun and then attempt to kill her husband I'm thinking she not good at making rational decisions. Sound like you want to blame the victim who is in critical condition in the hospital. Why don't you judge the suspect who was caught red handed?
There is a saying for this one .." Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned "...
Cheaters never prosper.
Hmm my wife always threatened me with the Bobit treatment for any indiscretions she might find out about...not that there are any honey!
@FreedomRocks Ha ha, I like your wife already....
@FreedomRocks Good as a wink and a shave, right? ];->
good save lol
Have to wonder (mainly because we will likely never truly know) what the original catalyst was that set off this explosion.  I'm not going to speculate here because I have no knowledge of the circumstances, but I do know that this points to a *huge* underlying problem.  I'm hoping they'll live long enough to both understand, come to grips with it and then each find someone else!
Personally, I'll only tolerate one attempt on my life and, if I survive and am capable, I'm *gone* without looking back!
@Gravity Works! Wow...your threshold is higher than mine.
@deejm2112 You might be surprised!  I can say that with the fullest confidence that my wife and I share the belief that, if our marriage has survived for almost 32 years (as it has!), then I'm willing to find out what the next 30+ years has to offer-- *with* my wife by my side!  God (or Goddess, whatever . . . ) willing!
@Gravity Works!  @deejm2112 And another happy and healthy 30 more years to you, Gravity!
play with fire, get burned.
