One dead, another critically injured after Hwy 18 crash

GRAND RONDE, Ore. – A 19-year-old man died and another man was critically injured in a crash on Highway 18 Friday evening, state police said.

Alexander Barnes, 19, of Aumsville, was driving westbound on Highway 18 when he tried to make a U-turn west of the Spirit Mountain Casino, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings. A pickup truck following the car struck the driver’s side of the as Barnes tried to turn around.

Barnes died at the scene.

A passenger in Barnes’ car, 22-year-old Matthew Frankenhauser of Aumsville, was critically injured in the crash, Hastings said. Medics took him to a Salem hospital.

The driver of the pickup truck, Dannyelle Mager, was not hurt. A passenger in the truck had minor injuries.
