PORTLAND, Ore. — One woman died and four people were taken to a hospital after police said a drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into a taxi cab in a Portland intersection early Sunday morning.
Brent Allan Warstler, 42, of Cornelius drove a pickup truck through a red light at the intersection of Northwest 5th Avenue and Everett Street in Old Town at around 2:30 a.m., according to police. A taxi cab crashed into the truck and pushed it onto a sidewalk, where it hit two women walking.
Rebecca Lynn Bray, 20, of Gresham died at the scene. Brandi Lucille Butner, 21, of Fairview, Ore. was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. Police said she is expected to survive.
Kylen Reagan heard the crash. He said he knew right away it was bad.
"It was loud," he said. "To me, it boggles my mind how they ended up in the position they were in."
Three other people who were passengers in Warstler's truck were injured in the crash. None of their injuries was serious. Warstler was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Investigators determined he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
"It was just like a solid crash, like two people went into each other at forty miles per hour from different directions is what it seemed like," said Reagan.
The taxi driver, 41-year-old Angel Custovio Olvera, and his passengers were not hurt. Police said Olvera showed no signs of impairment.
Warstler was taken to the Multnomah County Jail. He faces charges of manslaughter (1st degree), manslaughter (2nd degree), assault (2nd degree), assault (3rd degree), DUII, reckless driving.
He's expected in court on Tuesday.
I made this video of my best friend that was killed by the drunk driver at Old Town on Sunday. Rebecca "Becca" Lynn Bray was my best friend for almost 15 years, and we were practically brother and sister at the hip. I have had not had the easiest time dealing with her death, and I get all choked up thinking about her. We have been friends since kindergarten when all the drama was stealing a crayon and then as we got older the drama mellowed down and life started getting great. Becca Bray will be missed by family, friends, and loved ones and I will never forget her for she has made me the person I am today.Â
Â
So I am asking you guys to LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, and VIEW this video. Love you always now and forever Becca Bray! I know that you are in heaven looking down on all of us today and the rest of our lives.

My condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
Why was a 20 years old driving drunk?
@RCrandall Read the story. The victims weren't driving.
@RCrandall Why would anyone drive drunk? Anyone over 12 years old knows it is illegal, dangerous and extremely stupid.
When are people who drive drunk and kill somebody are going to be charged with murder?
Wait... So he killed ONE person and got charged with TWO manslaughter charges? Welcome to America, the country that can't count. 2, 4, 1, 5.... Isn't that how numbers go?
@SoundersCougzBravesPackers Usually it means that they are attached to different things, such as one for killing someone because of reckless driving and one for killing someone while under the influence. It's actually quite common for there to be multiple charges with regards to just one victim.
He is looking at some massive measure 11 time. Here are the minimums for the first 4 charges:
Crime/Minimum sentence:  1st degree Manslaughter / 10 years  2nd degree Manslaughter / 6 years, 3 months  1st degree Assault / 7 years, 6 months  2nd degree Assault / 5 years, 10 months
@MyViewToo Lets hope so...my relative with DUI 7 has seen 3 months total...
Some of you really ought to learn the difference between murder and manslaughter. Â Here's a hint: Â if you want this gentleman to never spend time behind bars, charge him with murder.
Â
Â
A REAL "HIGHER POWER" would work 100% of the time! The 12-Step religious AA/NA cult CHARADE has got to end....
Â
Drunks & Addicts NEED REAL HELP!
Does posting things in ALL CAPS mean your comments are more important than others, and that because you are posting in ALL CAPS, it also means your comments are more factual?
Â
Here, let me help ya out. The answers are No, and no. And what is your problem with others who find a way to recover from Life Pain, and find healthier coping skills, no matter what method they choose? What is your problem with those who donate their time, energy, heart and resources to helping others find a better way to live, long after they figured out for themselves?
Â
What do you care what others believe in? And even if it all turns out to be mind placebo, for millions of people, Faith & Fellowship are the only things that offer any hope to them at all. Without hope, this world is doomed.
Â
If you're so smart, and I'm talking REAL INTELLIGENCE instead of the pseudo intelligence you acquired by listening to other bitters, haters, and arrogant atheists, you would realize that a world without some kind of Faith Filter would be complete chaos.
Â
If people were taught from an early age that there is no God, that there is no spirit or unseen energy forces that influence Self I and Self II..and that when we die..it's fade to black and "e-buddy e-buddy e-buddy that's all folks"..then this world would be hellbent on destruction because of hugely magnified levels of greedy and selfish behavior. Â
Â
What complete ignorance and arrogance on your part. You offer no solutions, but only wish to criticize to others, because in your own ill thinking, it somehow makes you feel superior. Wow, and you're busting on AA and NA? What a joke. Unless you come up with something better, you might wanna just stay off of public forums. You're embarassing yourself and those who raised you.
@KillsGermsOnContact That's all August100 ever does. He never has anything good to say and tries to cut everyone down. It must be miserable being him.
@August100 I can't agree more...however, I bet you are aware, it is next to impossible to get people to understand that AA is most often NOT the answer. AA has terrible statistics but somehow the myth prevails.Â
I thought they were blocking off streets to automobiles in that section of town at that time of the night.
@correct 1block east of this.
The three people in his truck, in addition to anyone who may have served enough alcohol to impair this guy prior to the accident, should all be held accountable to some degree as well. Not to mention any bouncer that didnt follow him to the truck to be sure he wasnt driving.Â
Â
Broaden the scope of consequences for all who play a part in the ongoing DAILY crippling and killing of innocent people in this country because WE ALL KNOW HOW TO RECOGNIZE IMPAIRMENT AND AVERT DISASTERS CAUSED BY IT yet how many of us actually do a damn thing unless its for ourselves or the people we're with?
Â
When alcoholism is actually recognized for the physiological disease that it has been proven to be instead of the just a poor social decision, and until the countless existing entities that could make a change get involved for the sake of a remedy rather than a profit, these tragedies will continue.Â
Â
And until then, we can all be complacent and point fingers at the losers who drive drunk as long as they dont effect us right?Â
Next time youre at the bar, count the cars in the parking lot, and then count the people who are NOT drinking and see if the two numbers match.
Then see if you can point out which loser in there is going to kill your little sister as she walks home from work tonight.
Â
Â
Â
@Do Oh yeah, let's dilute the drunk driver's responsibility by pointing the finger at other people. We already have laws designed to curtail over-serving. We don't need to jump on society's desire to divorce ourselves from all personal responsibility and accountability.Â
Â
What we need are stiffer penalties that not only hold drunk drivers responsible and accountable but provide the necessary incentive to modify peoples' behavior.
Â
Â
@I812  @Do Never said a thing about a lesser degree of accountability for the person behind the wheel. Just more accountability for all the people who could have and should have made different choices of their own. But feel free to twist all the words you need to twist around to fit your need for criticizing and scrutinizing, I wont take it personally (because I didnt say it to begin with!)
Â
Although no one  could have reasonably known they might have made a difference and kept one young woman from being killed, and another from being terribly injured. Anyone and everyone who served him alcohol, watched him drink it, got in the truck he was driving, or suspected he was impaired without asking if he had a ride played some small role by simply doing no more or no less than absolutely nothing.
Â
Hell I didnt even suggest what would be suitable consequences, just the opinion that they all should be accountable in some way.Â
@Do I quote you:Â "Anyone and everyone who served him alcohol, watched him drink it, got in the truck he was driving, or suspected he was impaired without asking if he had a ride played some small role by simply doing no more or no less than absolutely nothing.
Â
Hell I didnt even suggest what would be suitable consequences, just the opinion that they all should be accountable in some way."
Â
If that isn't expecting everyone to become the moral police I don't know what is.
Â
And I wasn't suggesting there was a god. Unlike many people I don't believe in fairy tales, magic, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. Organized religion is simply a mechanism for preying upon peoples' fears and ignorance in an effort to coerce control, power, and money.Â
@I812 Surprised anyone would resort to using the most black and white analysis possible, and in a public forum too!
Â
For some mysterious reason You ask "So everybody should be the moral police for everybody else?" Â
Â
Did you get some sort of impression that I'd suggest such a silly thing, or did you disregard my input entirely and naturally avert reality in search of something that might sound good if you were to read it  aloud?
Â
It just makes no sense in response to me. But ill offer an answer for you and anyone else with less than average reading comprehension skill.Â
Â
No. Nothing I said was meant to indicate a suggestion that (losely quoting you) everybody should morally police everyone else if this kind of tragedy is to stop.Â
What I did suggest may be better stated if reworded to read "If everyone who may have been in a position to recognize a risk that night, Â did more than NOTHING at all that may have minimized the risk, it may have made a difference.
Even if it was one of the passengers in the truck with no fear of being "uncool" by something, anything about how much the driver had to drink. Even if it did nothing at all but cause a 10 second burst of laughter.Â
Whos to say the same 10 seconds wouldnt have been enough time for two women to cross the road, the light to turn green and the Portland Police pulling this guy over BEFORE someone died.
Â
If thats too difficult to comprehend, or you find any sort of similarities between my "logic" and that of people who talk to bearded men in the sky. I have no idea how to escape whatever light you think you've put me in, therefore I digress. My words are yours to spin the web of your dreams as you so desire.Â
Â
God? Pfft. I suppose my idea is far fetched, but bearded men in the sky?Â
Cmon. If theres a god I'd rather not cohor openly or secretively with an "almighty" presence that allows 20 year old women to be crushed under a truck (etc)
@Do So everybody should be the moral police for everybody else? Not buying it. That is what the religious right wing wants; ultimate control. We are all responsible for ourselves and our actions and we should all be held accountable for those actions. Responsibility only extends to those that may over-serve a customer but that is a very difficult line to draw because when most people are exhibit symptoms of drunkeness they are way past the 0.08 legal limit.Â
Â
Using your logic you are in some way responsible because you could have been patrolling the bars to prevent people from drinking too much, and parking lots to prevent people from operating a motor vehcile if they were drunk. Of course you were probably tucked in your cozy, warm home shirking your civic duty.
@I812  Laws and penalties already exist - we don't need more. What we need is for our soft justice system to quit slapping people on the wrist. How about actually making people serve according to the sentencing guidelines on the books?
@Do If "ALCOHOLISM" is a REAL DISEASE why isn't it TREATED by real medical doctors instead of by rehabbed drunks & addicts with 9 month community college Drug & Alcohol certificates who spew the Witchcraft & Sorcery of the 12-Step religious AA cult's "HIGHER POWER" nonsense?
Â
Why can't doctors treat LIVER DISEASE & FAILURE with the 12-step religious AA/NA cult's "Higher Power" instead of a liver transplant?
@August100 Alcoholism is a scientifically proven physiological disease and there is a chemical component in the brain that identifies the disease.
Â
Proven, Factual, Indisputable even by people who think "I've never heard of it so it cant be true"Â
Â
I dont need to prove that its a fact just because you say it isn't. And If you really want to know, you will find all the information is available to answer your question, if youre smart enough to admit to yourself that you will always have far more questions than you will answers.
Â
I doubt anyone would agree that I should prove it. Especially to some troll like you who's too lazy to look, and saying that I'm wrong without backing it up with anything more than BS Â lip service.
Â
Â
@August100  @Do Give it up.  Alcoholism can be treated by a real doctor, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist.
Â
While I don't completely agree with the AA/NA programs, they happen to be some of the most successful ones out there. Â Often people start drinking to fill a void. Â For many, religion and the companionship of others who have had similar experiences, provide strength and help to fill in the void that comes back into one's life after after stopping abusive behavior.
Â
Rather than b*tch about the programs, how about offering alternative solutions?
We can't SEE wind either..just sayin'..
@August100Â Â Could say the EXACT same thing about "GOD"
 @CTWU  @Do "most successful ones"
Do you have any PROOF from any source other than COURT ORDERED 12-Stepppers who have to stay faithful to the 12-Step religious cults in order to keep their welfare & disability checks coming in or from the MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR A YEAR 12-Step religious AA/NA cult treatment industry?
Â
The 12-Step religious cult's "HIGHER POWER" has NEVER been SEEN or its PHYSICS of its "HIGHER POWER"Â properties explained by the world's top scientists...

I'm pretty sure there's no rules out there that say she is more deserving of it because of that. You are disgusting, troll.
@GNTLwarrior Which might only make sense in this conversation if someone asks: "whats the most irrelevant,  ridiculous comment made here so far...?"Â
Â
Congrats, it could be yours.
Â
my thoughts go out to Becca's mom and sister. This is a sad thing that alot of people take advantage of in talking smack... Just remember how would your family feel if you were in the position? Do as your mother use to tell you as a kid if you cant say anything nice then dont say anything at all. Keep it to yourself. Sad day the world lost an other bright and beautiful star.
I'm more and more of the mind that if you drink and drive and kill someone, you get the death penalty. Â You rape someone, you get the death penalty. Â You molest a child (like real child, not 17 year old that looks like they are 25, like what boy scouts and priest go after child), you get the death penalty. Â It saves tax money, and just makes sense.
@Benjamin Schniffle It sounds like you are calling all Boy scouts child molesters? I am inclined to disagree with you. In fact, that was a dumbass thing of you to insinuate.
 @Benjamin SchniffleÂ
Â
William Dillon was released from Texas prison in 2008 after DNA evidence cleared him of a 1981 murder. Â Brian Banks spent 5+ years of his youth incarcerated in prison for rape, which later turned out to be completely false claims. Â This is a grave reminder that there remain innocent people locked up in jails/prisons. I'm not defending criminals here, but keep in mind that most crimes aren't black and white.Â
@EdgarDerby  @Benjamin Schniffle So true.  And rather than a blanket statement of "kill them all" I strongly believe the friends and family of the victim(s) as well as the victims, if they've survived, deserve a say in the form of punishment.  If they do not believe in capital punishment, their wishes should also be strongly considered.
And in those cases, the police or the legal system FAILED miserably to protect their rights!!! We need a JUSTICE system (not a LEGAL system!) that is concerned about all the parties involved, not just one side. I have to agree with Ben Schniffle about the death penalty - add drug dealers to that! - it would make people think twice before committing these types of violent crimes. And don't forget swifter punishment for those whose guilt is NOT in question! Like one week before execution!
Absolute rotten guy. How can you even be driving that fast on 5th and everett?? the lights are timed at 15MPH. I'm so sorry for both of them and their families. The loss of a friend and devestating injuries. God bless them, and they'll be in my prayers.

@August100 Lol, you are complete fail. The bottle on the counter is clearly ketchup (CLEARLY), and the bottle on the table could be any other kind of condiment -- hotsauce, etc -- but it sure ain't a beer bottle!
Â
But you saw what you wanted to see and jumped to the conclusions a warped mind would. Gratz, your perception of things is biased. You're not a thinking person, broski!
@August100 Thanks for judging her like that.. I find you disgusting !
It so doesnt matter if there are beer bottles on a KITCHEN counter... i know this woman and that is just disrespectul!
 @August100Â
So what? I can see a beer bottle on my counter too. Does that mean I deserve to die? If she was not so pretty then it would be okay?
Lock him up and throw away the keys.
@wondering your ok with paying for this sick s.o.b's sorry existance.  giving him four squares a day the world needs more hangin' trees, and we need to use them.
Where are all the usual KATU forum trolls that insist anyone with a latino name is surely an illegal?
After all the cab driver was 41-year-old Angel Custovio Olvera.
@Mipsfer The trolls are too buisy blaming the victim. With their diseased brains it is hard to focus on more than one mean topic.
@Mipsfer Ralph will be around soon....bet on it!
@Mipsfer What is your real problem? You have nothing else to do other than try to start a battle of words? With only 448 points you are not worthy of making any point at this stage - speaking of 'trolls' that you cater to...
@Mipsfer We comparing points now?  How smalled genitalia of you.  It is true thought, where are the trolls with the "is he legal" whenever someone's last name ends with a vowel.
@boned Only 448 points. Does that mean I don't win something?
I'm shattered.
