PORTLAND, Ore. – Teachers at Portland Public Schools plan to return to work Monday when the holiday break ends instead of going on strike.
A cooling off period ended last week, which gave teachers the option to go on strike. However, they are still in discussion with the school district regarding a new contract.
Portland Public Schools Spokeswoman Christine Miles released a statement regarding the negotiations.
“The district cannot call a strike," she said. "The cooling off period is over but we’re still negotiation. As long as we feel we’re moving forward, we will keep negotiating."
Miles said the district is focused on three main issues: adding more school days, adding more teachers and the ability to retain and recruit.
“Our main goal is coming to an agreement,” Miles said.
