Panty thief Sung Koo Kim gets out of prison next month

SALEM, Ore. - A man convicted of stealing thousands of pairs of women's underwear from college campuses, and whose name was once linked to the Brooke Wilberger case, will soon be out of prison.
Sung Koo Kim is scheduled to be released on Dec. 24. He was convicted in 2006 and has been at the Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem ever since.
You might recall that the case was a complicated one because it spanned four counties - Benton, Washington, Yamhill and Multnomah. Kim received sentences in each county and served some of them concurrently.
According to testimony during one of his trials, Kim began stealing women's underwear when he was 17 years old and by the time he was arrested, he had amassed a collection of over 3,400 pairs. Police also found 40,000 pornographic images on his computer that showed women being tortured, mutilated and raped, and there were also images of sex acts involving children.
Prior to his conviction, Kim was also considered a suspect in the 2004 disappearance of 19-year-old Brooke Wilberger. The young woman was last seen at an apartment complex in Corvallis and investigators found Kim in possession of underwear that belonged to another woman who lived there.
The Wilberger case drew national attention and once Kim's name was linked to it, he gained notoriety as a suspect. In the end, however, there was no evidence that could connect Kim to Wilberger's disappearance.
Investigators then honed in on another man, Joel Courtney, who eventually pleaded guilty to murdering Wilberger. Her body was later found on an abandoned logging road near Corvallis after Courtney gave investigators detailed instructions on where to find the remains. The following video clip is our report in 2009 when Wilberger's body was found:
Kim's family filed a lawsuit against the state, claiming they had been traumatized by being linked to the Wilberger case. While Kim's mother admitted that her son was mentally ill, she criticized police, saying they had portrayed her son as a monster.
In 2008, the state paid a $331,000 settlement to the Kim family. At the time, an Oregon Department of Justice spokesman said the state had decided to settle partly because of possible technical errors in a search warrant.
Just to get some perspective here.... An acknowleged mentally ill man steals underwear and gets 6 years in prison?
Â
Yeah... THAT'S an effective use of DOC money right there.Â
Â
I'm as disgusted as the next person by this guys crimes. But, lets be frank here... If it weren't for the fact that he showed up on law enforcements RADAR shortly after the Willburger kidnapping and murder, and that he was named by law enforcement as a 'person of interest' in the case, he would have likely gotten nothing more than probation and a fine.Â
Â
If I were his parents, I wouldn't have settled out of court.Â
Â
Now that he is confirmed mentally ill by the mother he should now go to the state hospital. Or do we have to wait for him to rape or murder before we shall see justice?
Released too late to get seasonal work at Victoria's Secret.
Chances are, sadly he will do it again, or worse! Â
Well... nice to see the media won't let him live down his past actions and have a chance to move on as a law abiding citizen.
He needs all those panties to wear when he does it Gangnum Style :)
wow, thats just like winning the lottery!!!!
So after spending time in prison, does Kim now have a penchant for tighty whities instead of frilly panties?
Not condoning this guy's actions -- esp images of children. And violent graphic images may be sick and disgusting but against the law? Was he convicted of possessing child porn? Fair enough. Otherwise, he stole panties? Great quantities of women's panties? Stealing is stealing and theft is theft, and a price should be paid. But, no physical violence, no weapon, and I'm guessing no substantial individual monetary loss. The trauma women may have endured is a valid issue, but how many years in prison? It seems a little out of proportion to the crimes. I'd like to hear from someone more knowledgable about typical sentences.Â
He's getting quite the xmas present. Released on 12/24/2012. I don't think he'll be stealing any panties for a long time.
@Billy Batts That would assume our prison system reformed him, and I highly doubt that.
Â
He'll be at some deviant activity again, without a doubt, hope no one gets hurt.
What is shocking is that he did so much time for panty thievery. People who molest children spend less time behind bars sometimes.
@Portlander29 I think it was for the kiddie porn they found on his computer
People who "Accidently" run over them also get less and DUI drivers also!! Go figure....
thanks KATUÂ for debriefing the public on this
Hopefully his mom set aside some of that $331,000 so that her son can replenish his underwear supply without having to steal it.
@Dirtman His thrill is stealing it.Â
@KKStJohn  @Dirtman No...the thrill is knowing some chick was previously occupying them.
Dear Police,
Â
Please link me to a crime I did not commit so I can get paid.
Sincerely
Me
@Portlander29 Me too!
@Dirtman, you beat me.
