PORTLAND, Ore. – Firefighters found a man in his 90s dead inside a home after it caught on fire Thursday, and they are looking into the possibility that his hoarding contributed to his death.
Fire crews were called to the home at 10931 S.W. 61st Ave. just before 1 p.m. It was reported to them that an elderly man was still inside. Heavy smoke and fire were coming from the home when they arrived, said Portland Fire Bureau spokesman Lt. Rich Chatman.
Firefighters had some problems fighting the fire because of the “extreme clutter/hoarding conditions” inside, Chatman said.
Neighbors tried to rescue the man, but they couldn't save him because there was too much stuff in the home.
Firefighters discovered the victim during their search of the home. The fire burned only one room in the home, Chatman said.
Firefighters said they are working to identify the cause of the fire and how the clutter in the house may have contributed to the fire.
The victim's name has not been released.
