Police: Driver cited for hitting, killing woman, 78, in SE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police cited a man who hit and killed a 78-year-old woman in Southeast Portland in February.

Police say Jarred Holt, 38, has been issued two traffic citations as a result of the investigation into a crash that killed Yan Huang and injured her husband, 80-year-old Zhi Hu, on Feb. 14 at Southeast 84th Avenue and Division Street.

According to police, the citations are for careless driving causing death to a vulnerable road user and careless driving causing serious injury to a vulnerable road user.

Sgt. Pete Simpson said the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 14. Police say Huang was killed at the scene. Her husband was seriously injured. Police say the couple was walking across Southeast Division Street in an unmarked crosswalk when they were hit.

Police say neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected as factors in the crash.

Police said this was the second traffic-related death of 2014.

Holt must appear before a judge on April 21, 2014.
