Police: Drunk driver crashes on bridge, damages MAX line
PORTLAND, Ore. – Police said a drunk driver crashed on Portland’s Steel Bridge early Sunday morning.
It happened just before 3 a.m., police said. Officers found a Hummer H2 that crashed into a support pole at the west end of the bridge.
The driver, 38-year-old Brian Edmund Anderson, was not hurt in the crash. Police said he was driving drunk, and his blood alcohol content (BAC) was more than twice the legal limit.
Police took Anderson to the Multnomah County Jail. He faces charges of DUII and reckless driving.
The crash damaged the overhead wire system used by MAX trains, disrupting service in downtown Portland, and across the bridge for several hours while crews surveyed the damage.
Steel bridge MAX service was restored at around 6 a.m., and service along 5th and 6th avenues downtown was back up and running at around 10:30 a.m.
TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt said addition work will need to be done to repair the damage, but crews were able to temporary fix the lines to restore service.
Police said Anderson could face additional charges in connection with the damage to the MAX line.
Walrus?
Goog Goog a joob!
his face is all red like a typical alcoholic looks.
Nice turkey tickler on the mug dude. Momma going to be proud of you. LOL!!!!!
"...crews were able to temporary fix the lines to restore service."
I'd be happy if KATU were able to temporary fix whoever is ginning up this kind of bubba-talk copy!!
Â
Every day (usually several times), this chronic offender is put in charge of downgrading the impression folks from afar have of Portlanders. This isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last time I've mocked the minimum-wage results that KATU seems Jim Dandy to accept. There's either a very dumb assistant editor with fat, sausage fingers writing this pap, or an extremely brilliant chicken who knows just what keys to hit 99.5% of the time that grain is tossed onto a keyboard. Someday, Springer will have a slow day culling trailer park residents and then we'll know the truth.
He's been in TREATMENT BEFORE....WHY did the COURT ORDERED 12-Step religious AA/NA cult's "HIGHER POWER" fail him?
Â
A REAL "HIGHER PIOWER" would work 100% of the time!
Just because the program didn't work for you August, doesn't mean it's useless. Remember, it's for those who WANT sobriety, not for those who need it....
Where's this man's neck?

 @xilef regnu Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son.
@flapjack @xilef regnu you can't fix stupid
 @flapjack  @xilef regnu Animal House?
Â
 @That_One_Dude  @xilef regnu You got it!
Check out the punishment for DUIs in other countries. In Bulgaria its execution. In France, a person license is suspended for three years. In Thailand the drunk driver and his family is incarcerated.Â
Â
@KKStJohn The Thailand penalty if true is pretty good. I would think most drunk drivers would think long and hard before doing that in Thailand.
 @KKStJohn Yeah but in the US we lockup people years for smoking a plant and give the DUI driver back their license under some stupid agreement they'll take a class or two and shape up.
Â
Yeah, I agree with you the DUI penalties should really be tightened here.
So we should tread alcohol like pot and lock the drunk up for years? Works for Me!
tread = treat. SCIMF Rats!
 @Jamie  @KKStJohn DUI Diversion Program Possible Jail â 48 Hours Minimum up to 1 Year, or Community Service â 80 Hours Fine - $1,000 Minimum*Fine - $2,000 Minimum (BAC .15 or Above) Fine â Up to $10,000 (If Child under 18 in Vehicle and was 3 Years Younger than Driver)Various DUII Fees â $300 Minimum License Suspension â 1 Year Ignition Interlock Device â For 1 Year after Suspension Complete Drug / Alcohol Treatment Program Participation in Victim-Impact Panel Program Required
Those penalties seem pretty fair to me.
 @gggstar  @KKStJohn I guess that explains why we don't have any repeat offenders, eh?
gggstar, I'm just sayin'.....look at the severity in other countries. When you think of the damage to property, loss of life, and re-offending DUIs, seems the message isn't getting across.Â
Of course this bonehead is driving a Hummer. Sheesh. He's a menace to society.Â
 @KKStJohn I'd rather own a Hummer H2, no bigger than Ford or Chevy SUV's.  Plus its nearly 95% recyclable compared to about 60% for the Prius which has heavy toxic batteries that are non-recycleable.  Over a 10 year period its cost per mile is less than that of a Prius.  If a Prius hits you, your no going to die, but will walk away.
 @RandyH My comment is.....here is the big lummox driving a big giant Hummer....and the fool is driving drunk. He's a menace and a danger to the community. This isn't Car Talk....this is commentary about drunk drivers.Â
$6250 maximum fine for trespassing MAX property, plus property damage for crashing overhead wire pole will be coming out from his Hummer H2 insurance, DUII charges and many more. Lock him up and enjoy your stay in jail.  Â
Drunk drivers have shown they have no brain. Their crashes have caused more taxpayer money to be used to fix the crash scenes that could have been used properly elsewhere.Â
Â
So - who gets the bill on this one? Yay for those who work and pay taxes!
 @washcomom Another site was reporting that Trimet was going after him for the costs. As they should!
 @washcomom Yes, we get to pay for this idiot's mistake.
One less Hummer on the roads. Unfortunately there aren't any vehicles small enough for the drunk driver.
Â
@medborgare Good idea, grab the Hummer and sell it for cash to offset repairs to the bridge and Trimet
Our society and culture does not see or do anything about the problem. Just like all the drug culture in this country, it eats away at the fire of good families and it is easy to criticize and then do nothing to help fight this drug culture. Lets hope this does not get close to your family or friends.
 @Duckfan Don't think I don't take drunk driving seriously. My comment is about the phenomenon of the drunk in their giant SUV barreling down the road. I am in full support of harsher laws and punishment for drunk driving. That's the only way anything will change.
 @Duckfan Let's outlaw drunk driving. Then, make it socially unacceptable. Maybe put a really hefty penalty if you get caught. License suspension? Then pile on more criminal charges if you end up hurting someone or damaging property.Â
Â
Â
from the looks of him he drank a whole keg
Once again it's demonstrated that you "CAN'T FIX STUPID."
Â
(Even when you combine a Hummer H2, a bald head, a goatee, and lots of alcohol.)
Â
Nice try though, Brian Edmund Anderson. Enjoy your consolation prize, stupid.
Â
Â
This airhead is over inflated.
"Police said he could face additional charges in connection with the damage to the MAX line."
Â
Wouldn't damage to the MAX line be a civil matter and not criminal in this case
 @beeker I think interfering with transit operations can be criminal as well.
 @knottriel If that's true, what about when Trimet interferes with its own operations?  :-P
 @beeker I'm sure they'll think of something.
Drunk drivers need to avoid the MAX lines.
 @Obongo Geddon They need to avoid driving cars when they're drunk.
Great picture Bloat-man! Probably not quite what Brian Anderson had in mind for his 20 seconds of fame (or infamy).
I can't help but chuckle. MAX disrupts my commute twice a day. It's amusing to see MAX get disrupted by us "little people". Of course, a little planning and common sense would have prevented the disruptions both ways.

 @Fed up Fed  @Conspirator Where do you get that? The man was drunk and he needs to pay the price. I'm just amused that the few riders on MAX (who all together pay but a fraction of the cost) seem to disrupt thousands of people in their daily commute. Yet when MAX gets disrupted, it makes the news.
 @Conspirator He doesn't strike me as being one of the "little" people.
Next headline will read, "Drunk Driver Lands on MAX Train; 20 people injured, 15 Dead." BAN ALCOHOL.
@PDXBEARÂ Â No....BAN STUPIDITY, demand personal responsibility, and quit slapping these idiots on the wrist...let them spend some MEANINGFUL time behind bars.
