Police: Homeowner arrested in killing of prowler
VANCOUVER, Wash. - Police have arrested a homeowner accused of fatally shooting a prowler on Tuesday morning.
Sean H. Doucette was booked in the Clark County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.
Vancouver police began investigating the shooting after the suspected shooter's wife called 911 at about 4 a.m. to report a prowler near her home, located near 150th Avenue and NE 33rd Street in Vancouver. The location is also near Evergreen High School.
A few minutes later, police said another man called 911 to say a shooting had taken place outside and that the prowler had died from his injuries. The man who called 911 wasn't the shooter, police said.
New details emerged late Tuesday afternoon about the suspected shooter. Doucette is a security guard with First Response Inc., and is licensed in Oregon to be an armed officer, said Dave Foglio, president of the company.
Doucette, who works in the patrol division, has been with First Response for several years. Foglio said he has a clean work record.
Doucette has his own weapon and carries it home, Foglio said.
As for the police investigation, the deceased prowler has not been identified; he was not wearing identification.
Police said Doucette cooperated with investigators and the Major Crimes Team is investigating.
A group of young people gathered near the location and some crossed crime tape onto the property only to be forced back by police officers.
Doucette does not have a criminal record in Washington and owns the home with Rachel Doucette, according to property tax records.
Prowler shouldn't ave been prowling now should he have been? he got his just desert. This man should go free.
Security guards shouldn't be allowed to carry firearms because in the first place, many of them are veterans with PTSD that can't get jobs as officers. Handing someone a gun that's mentally unstable is just asking for it. Isn't that what we are trying to stray away from? I'm not saying I know he has it, but chances are this is why he's a security guard and NOT a police officer. In the mean time, let's get Barney Fife to do patrols. Oh wait... never mind.
Sounds like this shooting was unjustified by latest developments.Â
The carry code says that the assailant must be in your house, and you must be afraid for your life. This is the difference between a sworn officer and a num no.
This is the difference between a rent a cop/security guard and police officer. Â
If people are going to insist on owning guns to "protect" themselves, I believe classes in the legalities need to be taken as part of the registration process. Protect your home yes...but DO NOT shoot the burgler once he's outside of your house...and DO NOT shoot in the back (it only shows the perp was getting away, which is what you wanted in the first place...right????) You have every right to protect your property...but you have to know the guidelines, or else this can backfire. And this to me shows it backfired greatly on Mr Doucette. Big strong ex-Marine couldn't take down a flimsy 19 year old without shooting him in the back and killing him as the kid was walking away??? Just sayin'....
I am all for citizens being armed, trained, and ready to protect themselves... But I see absolutely NO reason why deadly force was used in this instance..
THe man with the guns life was NOT threatened, he could have retreated into his home if he was confronted by the prowler. Or, if he had to pull the gun, I'll bet the prowler would have taken off if given the chance.
It is guys like this that are giving the liberal, anti gun activists their ammo
While the police do need to investigate this thoroughly, in my opinion Doucette has committed no crime by defending himself.
 @El *DEFENDING HMSELF*? You had me right up to that last two words. In order for anyone to defend something, there has to be a viable and in motion threat to the safety of what needs protecting. This case lacks that very important little detail.
What in the H*** is someone doing on private property at 4am??????? Are you kidding me??? We have the right to protect ourselves and our family!!!!! what the shooter does for a living is not relelvant to what happened here. I work for a bank and have been trained to use a hand gun for protection.. let's hear the stupid jokes that come out of that!
First Response??? Â WORST Response......you DO NOT want these people responding to ANY type of situation.....trust me on this one!
 @kluoto Judging from this story, I'm pretty sure you've got that right.
This  picture of macho man in Marine uniform is an insult to all Marines out there.
Ego boy should be depicted in an orange jump suit.
Society........that is the first thing that come to my mind. Â The difference with this case is that there is no doubt about what happened. Â Hope he gets sent to the Big House and a extremely large civil suit. Â I just bet every bottom feeder in the area is ready to jump on this civil suit
There is no reason why MR. EGO should have a gun as a rent-a-cop.
At no point should anyone be prowling around any vehicles at 4 am... This man obviously from report of witnesses exchanged words with the man and Mr. Doucette felt threatened for his and his families well being... This is assanine and maybe people should respects ones space better.
A rent a cop? Sounds like the issue in FL that's still going on, Zimmerman, right? So is he an officer or not? No? So maybe he should have let them handle it...
Â
Long way from figuring this out.
Could turn out both the deceased and the shooter were to blame.
But its going to take a while for this to get sorted out.
 @Jack_Bauer Seems most likely at the moment to me.
 @TreeWizard  @Jack_Bauer unlikely, you mean. The cops are charging this guy with murder most foul.
 @whirledworld  @Jack_Bauer that is also true.
Apparently we all need to resume this conversation on the KGW website because they are the only ones that bothered to do their own homework and actually interviewed eye witnesses.
Â
 @zzrich5 Witnesses can lie.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 Uh oh. What happened to Dale Gribble?
 @Sundowner  @TreeWizard But you sound just like you are channeling her in that statement. Read it aloud with her voice and you will see what I mean. ; )
 @whirledworld  @TreeWizard I guarantee you, I do NOT have a milliliter of Peggy Hill in me.  But boy, does my sister-in-law!Â
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 Everyone has a Gribble inside of them as well as a Hank, a Boomhauer, and a Bill, and a Peggy. John Redcorn? Hmmmm I guess if we all decide to get our freak on.
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 Everyone loves Gribble.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard Dale Gribble on the show is just like some of the posters on this forum. Seriously. Check it out again.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 NOOOOOO. No squidbillies until they are teens.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 where can one find the whole episode of that one online? I was coincidentally looking for it just last night to send it to someone. Could not find it. : (
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 What every child should be forced to watch it, so they know what real life is like.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard SQUIDBILLIES!!! OMG I stumbled into that show by accident and it also reminded me of living in Texas (the south). Hilarious but most definitely not for kids.
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 MINE ALSO.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 Good social commentary on Texas, culture, too. I lived there for several years so I laugh at the even subtler nuances of insider jokes on the shows. I loved the episode with Buckley's Angel; it is an all-time fave of mine.
 @zzrich5  @whirledworld wow am missing a lot tonight. didn't see that. squidy is funny.
 @TreeWizard  @whirledworld That's why I gave the wink. I love family guy and Squidbillies, just never got into the King of da Hill
Â
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 LOL that teaches me too not read it all.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 LOL ; )
Guess you missed the Ma'am.
Â
 @zzrich5  @whirledworld They are not cartoons they are animated comedies. No such thing as too old.Â
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 Dude am just giving you a hard time. Yes I like Bush. I don't care if you make fun of him.
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 Yes, I am having a good day and every public personality has their follies by which we can jest and they can self-jest. Have you never seen any of them "roasted" including W? . Lighten up already. I will take that "SIR" as a compliment LOL as you apparently think me of high standing. Which I am, and am glad to have you recognize it...
Of course, a rose by any other name would be Ma'am and smell as sweet.
 @TreeWizard  @whirledworld Never got into that show. I watched it a few times but I'm too old for cartoons. ;)
Â
 @zzrich5  @whirledworld King of the Hill?
 @whirledworld  @TreeWizard I don't even know who the heck Dale Gribble is.
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 Oh....Oh...... Oh.......... what the F bro.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard He changed his icon from Dale Gribble to Bush W Shrub.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard Follow the thread or ask TreeWizard.
 @TreeWizard  @whirledworld Holy cow I'm confused.
Â
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 WOW I will not stand by and listen to you insult Mr. W. GOOD DAY SIR.
 @whirledworld  @TreeWizard WTF are you talking about?
Â
 @TreeWizard  @zzrich5 Hold a book upside down while pretending to read it.
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 I need to represent my other favorite person.
 @TreeWizard So can News Reporters.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard you would be surprised that it can and does happen.
 @whirledworld  @TreeWizard Again, he was trained in this sort of thing. I REALLY doubt someone would shoot someone puking in the bushes trained or not.Â
Â
 @whirledworld  @zzrich5 That would be horrible.
 @zzrich5  @TreeWizard But WAS the deceased an actual prowler or a drunk teen trying to pee or barf in the bushes?
 @TreeWizard All I am saying, is that he was an actual trained professional. More often than not you can trust a military man with no criminal history over a prowler. Generally speaking. While I agree that he MAY have just ran out and started blasting, I find that hard to believe.Â
Â
 @zzrich5 I'll back that play.
