Police: Lincoln City man, 88, critically injured in hit-and-run

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. – An 88-year-old man walking across Highway 101 was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Sunday night in Lincoln City.

It happened in the 3300 block of North Highway 101 around 8:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Mike Leake.

Witnesses told police that George Phillips was walking through a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a southbound car. The crosswalk was well-lit and had flashing warning signs to alert traffic that someone was crossing the highway. Witnesses said those lights were flashing when Phillips was hit.

The suspect vehicle continued south without stopping. Witnesses said it was a white, older 2-door sedan. There could be damage to the front end of the car, Leake said. The car is missing its driver’s side mirror cover, which was found at the scene.

Phillips was taken to a hospital and later taken to an unknown trauma center with critical injuries, according to Leake.

Anyone who witnessed the hit-and-run or has information about the suspect’s car is asked to call Lincoln City police at 541-994-3636.
