Police: Man bites firefighter, other man becomes abusive
PORTLAND, Ore. - A man who firefighters tried to assist Tuesday night bit one rescuer and another man was abusive towards the fire crew, Portland police said.
The incident began just before 7:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of SE Ogden Street when Portland Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a call of a person suffering from possible alcohol poisoning.
When crews arrived, they began to treat a 19-year-old man but police said he then bit a firefighter on the leg. The firefighters was not seriously injured.
Firefighter strapped the unidentified "thrashing man" to a gurney and called police for assistance.
But police said other people arrived at the residence and one man, Jeremy Michael Coffin, 36, was "verbally abusive" towards the firefighters who were trying to assist the other man.
Police said Coffin locked fire crews inside the residence as they were trying to get police assistance and would not let anyone leave. Police said Coffin eventually unlocked the door.
Coffin was taken into custody and taken to to the Multnomah County Jail for interfering with a firefighter.
The other man was taken to a hospital for alcohol poisoning and a possible drug overdose. Police did not say if faces any charges for biting the firefighter.
Police said Coffin may face additional charges.
apparently his mom never taught him not to bite other kids
Should have checked him first for a rabies tag. Loser, boozer, drug abuser.
Dog bites man is not news. Man bites fireman is news
The 19-yr-old couldn't be suffering from alcohol poisoning, he's two years shy of the legal drinking age! LOL
Drop him on the ground and let whatever happens, happen. And let these firefighters go back to the station so they can respond to people who really need help.
@Rob C 503 Sounds like both the people at the residence needed serious help, so I'm glad they were there.
@Rob C 503 ~  Yeah... and so they can help people who will APPRECIATE it...
sounds like an episode of My Name Is Earl

They should have just thrown him off the gurney and drove away with their stuff. What a loser.
Ban alcohol.
 @PDXBEAR Ban stupid comments
@deejm2112 Why do people think this is funny every time?Â
Oh, the stories I could tell about my 20 years in the ER! I've lost track of the number of times I've been physically assaulted, spit on, kicked, bitten, or had human excrement thrown at me! Either myself, or one of the nurses, is undoubtedly verbally abused nearly every shift. Hospital administrators and CEOs generally do not seem to regard ER violence as one of their top concerns. They need to empower the ER staff to report violence without fear of reprisal. And in turn, provide a good-faith commitment to rapidly making important and necessary safety and security improvements.
@MDfor911 There's always that horse tranquilizer that Dexter uses. ;-)
I, for one, appreciate the efforts of the folks in ER, as well as emergency responders of all areas (cops, fire, emt, etc...). I have been helped by a variety of you folks over the years on account of different emergencies; self caused as well as non self-caused. THANK YOU!
Didn't the USA send troops into the Errol Heights, Brentwood and Darlington neighborhoods some years ago and they had to retreat because of the superior scumbag insurgency within?
The White Ghetto. Same as it ever was.
@Lips No, it's actually a decent neighborhood over there.
@Spiffy Really? Cause I grew up on 69th and Crystal Springs, drive through the flats now and then, and honey, it's not nice.. It was my childhood dream to get out of the ghetto and never go back. Mission accomplished.
Love the musical refference! The Talking Heads were so awesome!
