Police: Man slit throat of family dog

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a Forest Grove man on animal abuse charges after police say he slit the throat of his family's golden retriever.
The grand jury was convened Friday.
Police say 45-year-old Michael Burns had an altercation with the dog inside his family's home in early December. A family member called police after the dog was killed.
Burns was arrested on Dec. 8. Burns remains out of custody, with a Feb. 4 pretrial court date in Washington County.
If he would do that to a defensless dog imagine what he is capable in doing to a person! Its a shame that sentencing won't bring back that dog.
Some people have no resect for life, I think it's because they don't even resect their own.
I have 4 golden retreivers and this really pissed me off....even though I would feel the same about it happening to any breed.....I just won't say what I wish would happen to this POS....
Any one who slits an animals throat unless to humanely put it out of its misery, needs to be locked up and have the key thrown away, should pay mandatory restitution to family, have his sentence be made to work with dogs as in cleaning up there pooh, and if he so much as twitches wrong unleash the hell hounds up on him. See how he feels when there canines sink in to his flesh and he can not defend himself.
But don't let him die. My point is not to be gross nor dark and sinister but to humble this P.O.C. Until he is broken .
To the family of Michael Burns:
Â
One of the common characteristics of sociopaths is that they kill animals.
Â
My point is this: there is no telling who or what is next. If you were all smart, you'd remove yourself from his presence immediately and seek a restraining order against him. If you choose to stay, then you have only yourself to blame in the event something truly tragic happens if Mr. Michael Burns "snaps."
More details on that  altercation would be appreciated.  If the animal got savage or bit him...was it self defense?  If he'd had a gun and shot the dog would the resulting charges have been filed?  I'd like a lot more details.  Did he do it to hurt the family?  I feel disinclined to judge right now...but if he is an utter jerk who savagely killed a family pet with little provocation then he should be held accountable by law.Â
@BCH mom Seems like in order for it to be self defense, Mr. Burns would have had to already have a knife in his hand when the dog attacked him, thus leading to his survival instinct kicking in and causing him to stab at the dog. What apparently actually happened is, this guy got pissed off, went and found a weapon, went BACK to find a defenseless animal, and slit its throat. That is cold-blooded murder and nothing else. A look into this guy's criminal record would be almost guaranteed to reveal previous violent behavior, probably toward children or other animals, or a physically inferior wife.
He slit the throat of an animal, that is was a pet should be irrelevant. If you are going to start arresting people for slitting the throat of an animal, we need to arrest all the muslims, I guess... it's how you have to kill animals for them to be certified Halal.
@moej - Now you're funny to...not very articulate mind you but funny nonetheless...as you were;-)
My dog saw the picture of the pos, he asked me "Do you think he got called hare-lip too many times as a kid and that made him violent? Maybe he needs to be neutered, it makes most animals less agressive!"
anyone who would do that, to a family member, and yes pets become family members, are pathetic and need to be treated like the murder he is. Just because of someone he loved was probably upset with the dog otr another family member. What will happen when he gets angry at another person or even a child?  What does he think the dog went through as it knew it was dying? Pain and fear must have been overwhelming. Let alone the question as to why. Pet have feels and emotions as well.Â
What a piece of work...maybe someone should slit his throat...hmmm, not a bad idea, ...dirt bag!
Animal abuse in the First Degree is a felony. Of course, you should release him back into the community! WTF! I guess only terrorists need to go free; or those who commit violence against human victims! Whatever!Â
This is AWFUL!!!!!!! Animal cruelty, family terrorization, abuse  and cruelty,  and he did it to a golden retriever to boot, which are the most gentle of breeds!!!!I feel sick to my stomach and sick in the heart even knowing about this crime.Â
He looks cold and merciless in his eyes. And a little nuts, actually. Â Cannot help but wonder what horrors he was subjected to as a tender child to become this monster? I hate what he did and I hate whoever (if any) may have damaged this guy to make him this messed up. Â Family violence is a learned thing.
Azzholes like this often abuse or kill family pets to control or intimidate their wife and kids. Never mind animals, this guy shouldn't be around humans.
Mayby Michael should now know what his dog feels like....R.I.P. pup. Â I have a golden and I think they are amazing pups he will always be my baby no matter how much wrong he does. Â And belive me he is no angel.
I would love to take my bull whip to this sick POS!
@Jim330rifle Where do I sign up to help you?
@Jim330rifle Yeah, and put shards of glass on the ends of the whip!!!!
@Jim330rifle I'd love to join you.
 @gofigure  @Jim330rifle Me 2:)
Wouldn't it be nice to have a system that would allow "volunteers" to dole out the punishment in crimes like this. Unfortunately we don't and never will have such a list, and given our current justice system, this scumbag probably will get not much more than a slap on the wrist. I can't imaging perpetrating such a crime on an innocent dog, much less a gentle golden retriever. So sad!
@TruthSpeaker Well, my thought is a volunteer system would really bring out the worst in people. There would be regulars, people signing up to dish out punishment before crimes were committed, etc. The one advantage to state-facilitated punishments is that, in theory anyway, they don't bring out the latent sadistic tendencies of the masses. Having noted that, I appreciate your appalled reaction to a disgusting crime.
@ankagula  @TruthSpeaker  We could hold lotteries to pick volunteers, provided the victim or their family members waive their turn at the perpetrator. We could reduce the deficit and serve justice at the same time..
Hard to think of anything a dog could do to deserve such horrible abuse, short of attacking someone. This guy's a time bomb, and probably abuses his helpless kids too, if he has any. What  POS.
Good... he should receive exactly what he dished out. NO LIFE
@kass obrion You mean execution? How; electric chair, firing squad, hung, or how he killed the dog, slitting of the throat?Â
Sheesh
I can't even look at the face of this POS. There has to be a special place in HELL for someone who would do this to a helpless animal who trusts you.
@lorivance There IS a special place in hell for them!!!!!!!!
Golden Retrievers are one of the most gentle of all the dogs. They're used as service dogs for the disabled, are kid
freindly & all around sweet tempered dogs. I can't imagine what in the world the dog could've done to him to deserve
such a violent end!!! The family must be heartbroken. An eye for an eye, I say!!
One should never punish an animal. They do not understand. One should rather discipline their behavior by making a direct connection to it and showing them that it is not acceptable.
Â
What Mr. Burns did is reprehensible. He should never be allowed to own or be left to care for any other animal as long as he lives. He is obviously emotionally retarded and not in control of his anger. It's probably a good thing it wasn't a child.
How incredibly sad :(Â
What an effing POS monster! Punishment for animal abuse crimes are way too lenient, why is he even allowed to be out of jail? I hope karma hits him big!
im sorry but i dont care what kind of animal you have for a pet, if it misbehaves, you punish the dog, not cut his throat... do we cut your throat for speeding or parking in a no parking zone?... no... we give you a slap on the wrist, say dont do it again and let you go about your business... if your dog craps on your carpet or chews up your pair of shoes, you swat the dog with a news paper yell at him and say "bad dog" and put his furry paws outside for the night(and dont leave your shoes out next time), you dont slash the dogs throat. and if you dog is aggressive enough say bite you or your child, well then you probably suck at training or teaching your dog not to bite, and so maybe you kick your dog, yell at him a little harder -use some adjectives probably and put his furry paws outside again with no food and maybe leave him outside for a couple of days, but again slashing its throat is overboard... if the dog is that messed up that it needs to be put down then shoot the damn thing in the head and put it out fast!, or take it to the humane society and let them do it. i have a yellow lab, and sometimes he had really pissed me off, chewed up kids toys, books, expensive cloths/shoes, pooped inside... but he was also a puppy when he did that, sure i smacked him a good one and yelled at him, but i never beat him or abused him -although im sure some will say smacking or hitting an animal is abuse. its all in how you hit them and if you make that a habit or not. my dog still loves me and would put its life in the way of harm for any member of my family to protect us. they are amazingly loyal and devoted creatures if treated with respect and compassion. we(most of us anyhow) discipline our children(some should do it more), and they still love us -even if they dont admit it, and we still love them... anyhow yeah this creep who slit his dogs throat, no dont lock his butt up, dont put him away for life... none of that. give him a trial find out what happened exactly, and if it is warranted that he killed the dog then let him be mauled by a couple of dogs so its a fair trade. but if he needlessly killed the dog -ie the dog was not rabid or about to kill another person or animal then he should be killed in the same fashion. no need to waste our tax dollars on feeding this scum for the rest of his life. the dog did not deserve thatÂ
@soundthinker
You advocate smacking dogs?? You hit your dog?? WTH?? Â YOU NEVER HIT DOGS, you abuser. NEVER. Ask any dog trainer.. Ask the freakin' Oregon Humane Society or the Humane Society of SW Washington. Do you think dogs getting ready to become guide dogs for the blind or service dogs of other kinds are hit with newspapers, Â or thrown out for the night and yelled at etc. to "train them"? The answer is a big fat NO. Do that and you wreck a prized temperament dog to fail at becoming a service or guide dog...out of human stupidity. Â Your behavior would wreck any dog's temperament. You appall me with what you advocate: very wrong and just bad ideas that were debunked decades ago.
You don't punish a dog by tossing it outside for the night.  You don't PUNISH dogs, you TRAIN them. Dogs don't even think like humans about anything, yet you expect them to understand  a human concept of "punishment" WTH?!  Go read some dog training books and watch some dog training videos, and get a clue. You do  any of that abusive behavior like that again, and I am sure I could round up any number of folks on this forum., not to mention a bunch of  wild-eyed  animal rights folks, etc, to come with Animal Control to remove your dog to a safe home. PLEASE LEARN NEW TRICKS OF DOG TRAINING for your dog's sake. You will love the results and find out your dog is way smarter than you even imagined....once you give it a chance to show you. And it might even forgive you for being a clueless bully to it.
Â
Wow. A real live d o u c h e - b a g.
Bury him alive in Dog Poop!
@swede760  Well, just below his nose anyway.
With his disregard for life, this guy should not be free to do harm. Throw the book at him. A GOLDEN RETRIEVER???!!!!!
Seeing the lead-in for this story and actually reading it, was like slowing down for a car wreck. You always hope that the innocent survived, but this car wreck killed the innocent. Tow the wreck off to the junkyard!!!!Â
I'm pretty much of a pacifist until it comes to child or animal abuse. Â The person who wrote, and eye for an eye..well, I tend to agree with them. Â If this horrible horrible couple get off with just a minimal sentence, I'll be outraged.Â
@K. Michelle Pendley Where did you hear or see that it was a couple who did this horrific thing? I thought just the dirtbag Michael Burns was responsible.
Real nice guy!! Eye for an Eye.
Big bully that doesn't deserved to be called a "man". He's not a man - he is a total loser that has to hurt things in order to feel better about himself. I don't know what the punishments are for these types of crimes, but I hope it's more than a slap on the wrist. He is a violent individual that needs to be monitored before the next victim is a human.
Geez, he looks so well-adjusted. Wonder what could have made him go off the rails? * sarcasm (LOTS of sarcasm).
golden retievers are such nice dogs. this guy must be a real animal
@Phuzz ~  Calling this guy an "animal" is an insult to animals...  Lock this (whatever) up and throw the key away so he can't hurt anyone / anything else...
...Oh, and I agree with you about golden retrievers; they are really sweet dogs..!
@margay1 I think you should have written "demon" where you have whatever
@margay1  @Phuzz Exactly, margay! Phuzz, Michael Burns is a monster, NOT an animal. Animals DON'T DO things like this!!!!!
@gofigure He is worse than a monster, he is a demon!
