PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested a man they said attacked two transgender women with a belt buckle as he yelled anti-gay slurs.

According to Portland Police spokesman Lt. Robert King, officers heard about a disturbance on Tuesday evening and arrived at NW 2nd and Burnside to find Reginald McGhee.

McGhee complained to officers that he had been pepper-sprayed by two people, King said. As officers were talking to him, the two transgender women walked up and claimed McGhee had assaulted them.

That’s when McGhee took off running, King said. Officers caught him a few blocks away.

The victims said McGhee approached them as they tried to pass on the sidewalk. They told officers he began yelling anti-gay slurs and profanity has he pulled off his belt and started swinging the buckle at them.

One of the victims said she suffered minor injuries during the attack. The other woman was not hurt.

McGhee faces assault and intimidation charges and was taken to jail.
