Person detained after standoff at Beaverton apartment
BEAVERTON, Ore. - Police converged on an apartment complex in Beaverton Wednesday morning and residents were evacuated as a SWAT unit tried to contact several suspects inside an apartment.
One person was detained but no arrests have been announced, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
The standoff began at about 3:45 a.m. at the Canyon Park Apartments near S.W. 107th and S.W. Canyon Road and lasted about four hours.
Sgt. Dave Thompson said deputies were seeking four suspects connected to a crime that took place before the standoff but he did not specify what that incident involved.
Sgt. Thompson said three of the four suspects were apprehended at the complex but a fourth person would not come out of an apartment. Eventually, the fourth suspect surrendered to deputies.
Andrew Harris was one of the residents evacuated by police. He said the complex was "family friendly" and said while most people in building got along well, the apartment where the suspects lived had frequent visitors and "a strong smell of marijuana."
He said neighbors became concerned about the activity after the new tenants moved in a few weeks ago. After law enforcement took action Wednesday, Harris said his reaction was "thank God, it’s about time. We were glad the police were here, we’ve been wanting this to happen."
S.W. 107th was closed in the area but the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and S.W. Canyon Road remained open. Police began to clear the scene after 7 a.m.
Police have not yet identified the suspects.
