Police: Shots fired outside Portland strip club

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police say officers responded to a shots-fired call in the parking lot of a southeast Portland strip club.
It happened just before 1 a.m. Wednesday outside of Glimmers Strip Club, located at 3532 SE Powell Blvd., police said.
27-year-old Robert Lewis told police he was shot at by someone he doesn't know and he returned fire.
Police said Lewis has a valid concealed weapons permit.
There were no injuries. The shooting is believed to be gang-related.
So what's achieved by having conceal weapons permits?
Â
If this exact same situation had occurred only Mr. Lewis did not have a CWP, then it would have been a called a gang shooting. But since he has a CWP, it's all good? All the bullets flying around are okay because of the CWP? We're safer because he could return fire (whether he really knows how to use a gun or not)? And now gang members know that their targets might be armed (a news flash to them, I'm sure)? I just don't get it.
@Max Quinn That post doesn't even deserve a response.  Clueless doesn't begin to describe your statement.  Let me guess - you also approve of Obamacare, want that apologetic turkey to be elected again and want to turn this country into a socialist state.
If the shooting was on Powell anywhere between 82nd and the Ross Island bridge, OF COURSE it was in front of a strip club. EVERYTHING on that stretch of Powell is in front of one strip club or another.
Â
Practice makes perfect.
Just one more in a long line of stories proving that guns and t*tties don't mix. Â
and no arrest???? Gang Activity??Has concealed weapons permit???
@granny4life Why do you express surprise at the fact he has a CWP?
@granny4life Why would there be an arrest? We don't know if this guy was a gang member, or if the people firing appeared to be gang members. He may have just saved his own life.
Guns and alcohol just don't mix, even and especially with a CHL aboard!
@jpk So where does it say that alcohol was involved?  Nowhere that's where.Â
The KATU story could have mentioned that he was on the way to get some pie, but they had to add that it was in front of a strip club at 1 AM. That's great, that he went armed to get some pie. In Portland; it's probably the way to do anything at anytime in Portland..
@jpk It happened in their parking lot.  But there is nothing to say why that was.  You can speculate all you want but the main takeaway here is that the police obviously did not consider him under the influence or else there would have been an arrest.  Now, there may be later on if the prosecutor's office determines that he was negligent in returning fire.  But so far - all the data is very sparse so there is nothing but speculation.  Also, the Street View from Google shows plainly that there are several businesses and even an apartment complex that could warrant taking a shortcut through the parking lot.
@jpk Are you saying that there are certain activities, that once performed preclude one from trying to save their own life?
@Siwash Not at all, and don't get me wrong here. Obviously I can't give legal advice, but from past experience in LE, when someone has been drinking and then exercised defense of self involving a firearm, it may be looked at slightly differently. Same thing happens when someone has been drinking, even though not DUII, and is involved in a traffic crash. Â
@jpk  @Siwash I can state, with as much certainty as your assertions, that he was on his way to Shari's for some pie and had to cross the parking lot to get there.  Yeah, that's what happened.  uh huh
@jpk  @Siwash If the guy was under the influence he would most definitely been arrested.  But he wasn't now was he?
@jpk Nobody said anything about alcohol. Way to draw to your own conclusions, that guy may have well just saved his own life.
@Broadway97209 You may be right, and I don't dispute that he may have saved his own life. However, I don't think I am far off when at 1 AM he comes out of a strip club, that all he was doing inside was sketching the artist's models arrayed for his artistic pleasure. Surely he must have been thirsty also. All I'm getting at is that when alcohol is aboard, the burden of proof may shift.
@ab @Broadway97209 Possible, but why would KATU mention that it happened outside of a strip club? To add emotional weight? Nah, not KATU. Nonetheless, mixing alcohol and firearms is a bad idea.
@jpk  @Broadway97209 Maybe you got further info from another news agency because if you didn't it doesn't say that he was coming out of the strip club nor does it even say he was patronizing it at all.  It is totally possible for someone to be walking along in a parking lot when they are, say, getting off work and headed to their car or something.  Heck I had to walk along a not so good part of town this morning at 4am because I had to get to the bus to get to work.  If someone started shooting at me, I'd definitely return fire as well.
@jpk  Throw in naked T&A and you have a VERY volatile mixture.
