Police: Suspect in custody after chase, officer-involved shooting
PORTLAND, Ore. – Officers took an attempted murder suspect into custody after a police chase and officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning, police said.
Police responded to a report of shots fired at the Hathaway Apartments at 3320 Southeast 134th Avenue just before 4 a.m.
Police said a man was shot. He was taken to a Portland hospital.
After officers arrived, police said the suspect drove away in his truck. They chased the suspect until he crashed into a back yard fence at 148th Avenue and Northeast San Rafael.
Police said there was an officer-involved shooting at the crash site. It’s unclear how many officers fired shots or if anyone was hit.
"It was six gunshots in a row we heard," said neighbor Kitty Head. "They were coaxing him to put his rifle down and surrender and he wasn't going for it."
Police activated the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) after the shooting. Team members took the suspect into custody without further incident, police said.
The street was littered with bullet casings Saturday. Neighbors said some of the gunfire hit the house where the truck crashed in the back yard.
The suspect has not been identified. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
@Brownknight no ur wrong. i live 5 blocks away. Victims got shot after stepping up for woman that was being harassed by suspect. Hero's live in the hood too! Â
No I am not wrong. I said "hefty percentage". I made NO suggestion that this was the case in this instance. Reread my post. And if what you state is correct, hat's off the the fellow and a speedy recovery.
Glad the officers are okay. Nice to see the nards that have it figured out "the police were/are/always will be wrong", have not woken up yet.  Sidebar here; There is a very hefty percentage of these shootings in which lifestyle of both victim and suspect play a significant role. Bad lifestyle decisions have consequences and only short-term rewards. For those that cant seem to spot the red flags of danger in thier lives, there is a Good Book in print that has sound advice on how to conduct yourself. I am not a church-goer, but I do recognize good advice when I see it, (well, maybe not the first time, but eventually.)Â
You never know how this will affect the family members of, not only the victim's but the suspect's family as well. Imagine this happened to your family, would you want people to talk about your family this way or give out their personal information? There's a reason that police don't release victim's or suspect's names for a while. My heart goes out to the victim and his family but I also have empathy for the suspect's family, as they feel the shame of the suspect's actions and the horror of knowing they were capable of something so heinous.

If someone in my family did something like this and was shot by the police I would grieve but at the same time wonder why he would make such a stupid move.
Â
Pointing a gun at police is something only a person with a death wish would do. I consider those kind of a people very dangerous and selfish. Forcing a cop to shoot them is a cowards way out.
@disgruntledfamily Not only horror but shock. I know the man and never in a million years would have suspected that he would ever do anything like this. Until this night he was a kind, calm, gentle person. To people like @stinger139 and @RalphCramden your words are crass and uncalled for. You do not know what happened here. Neither do I, but to say that someone should die when you don't know the story is hurtful to the family/friends who have done nothing wrong.
Should have shot him one more time.
Bummer. The bad guy survived.

Ditto!
This occured right accross the street from us at Summerplace! I woke up suddenly at about 4am then heard BAM..BAM,BAM,BAM, BAM! Gunfire! Then someone yelling. I had no idea what was going on but heard police on a speaker saying "put the gun down. We want to help you. You need medical treatment, put the rifle down..You're bleeding pretty bad, we want to help you, cooperate with us. this went on for at least half an hour. Did not hear further shots fired.  Just a rapid 5-6 shots, one time.
Amazing that it is still "unclear how many officers fired shots or if anyone was it." I'm guessing the guy in the hospital was hit, but then I'm no journalist...
Wow, two officer involved shootings in one night! Glad the officers are safe!
Why wasn't the suspect identified? They must know by now, 8 hours after the event, who he is. Of course, he may not know who he is, or he is deciding which name to use?
@jpk 10 hours and counting.. No updates on the perp..
@Scot Young And, still no ID on the suspect as of 6:10 PM! Golly! Maybe he's from a UFO?
@fxholeatheist  @PD1202  @jpk Wrong Joshua Baker. I was lessening in on the police scanner this morning an heard the entire thing. The Joshua Baker who shot the man with a 22 rifle, an then  led police on the high speed chase before being shot after a stand off , was born 8/7/1985.
 @PD1202  @jpk As in, this guy? Â
