Police: Teens threw rocks at cars driving on freeway
PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested two 17-year-old boys who they said threw rocks at cars driving on the freeway in Northeast Portland early Sunday morning.
Officers were flagged down just before 1 a.m. by two men who said someone threw rocks at their cars while they were driving on Interstate 205.
The men told police that the rocks came from the Killingsworth overpass. Both cars had windshield damage. No one in the cars was hurt, police said.
Police found two 17-year-old boys on some railroad tracks nearby and took them into custody. Both were charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief and released to their parents.
What are the chances these two were in Redmond OR last month? My husband experienced a rock being throw off an overpass here. Missed our windshield, but cracked our oil pan instead. For us, it was 10 pm, outside of town (off the Eagle Crest overpass for those who know the area) and pouring rain. If there is a chance this could be related, I would appreciate if someone would contact me.
They should have to pay for windows...walk in Every PDX parade for a few years holding huge signs stating what they did. As well as personally appologise to victoms and probation.Â
What are their names?
maybe they were aiming at all the illegal stickers you have on your windshield

Why were these kids not charged with assault and tried as adults?
How about we toss the kids off the overpass?
I think teens like this need to sit through a nice, LONG slide show of what people look like after rocks DO hit them....like a lady in Minneapolis whose face and life were lost. Â Then perhaps have a psych exam to see if they react to the idea of facing murder chargers or how they'd feel it they lost a parent to such behavior...thrill seeking is one thing but endangering lives crosses the line.
@BCH mom Sounds good but if these two are as jaded as I believe they are, a month in jail may make a much better point.  Showing them pictures of what could happen to their victims won't have the same effect as putting their butts in jail for a while.  JMHO.....
Two 17-year-olds out at 1:00 a.m. causing damage and potentially serious injury or death and they were released to their parents? Sounds like there is way too little parenting going on to begin with.
Charges are alittle on the slim side. I would think attempted assault 1 would be a good start. They will get a plea deal that will be Prohbation for these charges.
Should have thrown THEM off the overpass. Damn fools could have killed someone.
I hope they throw the book and a few dozen rocks at them!
@Mikey So we should have killed them because there was a chance that their actions could have killed somebody else? What logic?
Maybe we should throw rocks at the teens, see how they like it.
Our society is out of touch. Â Instead of a slap on the wrist, these worthless idiots should have been charged with attempted murder.
@boomer Yeah definitely, I bet incarcerating these minors for 20 years and setting these kids up to be serial criminals is better than just making them pay out of their pockets for the windshields, making the kids apologize, and a good woop on the head, right? And then we wonder why are prisons are so full, huh?Â
Ok, have them pay out of pocket for the death of a passenger or driver? Make them apologize to the family of a deceased passenger or driver? Give them a woop on the head for causing the death of passenger, or driver or complete family?Interesting to say the least
@Drinkers Anonymous  @boomer And here, ladies and gentlemen, is why we're in the position we're in today.  What would you suggest, DA, strong language?  You can't make them pay out of their pockets if they don't have any money, and since they are minors, they can't be held liable for any damages.  I believe under Oregon law the parents can be held liable for something like $3K of "intentional" damage caused by minor children....if the parents have any money.  Oh yeah, making them apologize and giving them "a good woop on the head" (whatever that is) will sure get it done.  Solid thinking there...!!  No, I'd throw their butts in jail for AT LEAST a month and see how that works out for them.  Maybe they'd choose to behave in such a way that would keep them from returning.  Maybe.  Perhaps.  I'm strangely comfortable with it....
These kids need REAL consequences, not kid stuff.
I think about 4-5 years would be a good punishment.
We threw snowballs and a few water balloons at cars and even danced on a sign along I-5 as kids, but throwing rocks?? These kids need a serious beating, but they will be held as heroes in this new paradigm...
@boned How about one of them Military boot camps for troubled teens? ah that is an interesting Jaz song.
@boned What I mean by that it is dead on track for today.
These 2 need lesson in discipline, send em off to...MILITARY BOOT CAMP!
@lee986321 You need to spend less time on KATU.com and more time working so we don't have to pay for your food stamps!  It actually makes me sick to see how much you post on this message board when you admit to collecting SSI and food stamps and other assistance when you could spend the time you take posting getting a job and taking care of yourself and your family!
@B Smizzle That's rather rude. You have no idea what Lee's circumstances are. Yeah, sometimes he's a pain in the butt, but he's just as entitled to his opinion as you are...maybe more. And just because people get SSI doesn't mean they're lazy.
@Mikey Lee (a woman not a man) has admitted to being on food stamps as well as a other government assistance programs and has complained they just are not enough to make ends meet.  Then she spends countless hours posting on KATU...one message I found particularly funny was when she freaked about Sam Adams wanting a new tax on land line phones.  She was upset it would cost her more and why should people leach off society.....while at the same time leaching off society.  She laments the fact that she would have to pay more for someone on one hand while on the other hand collecting government assistance!
If you have this much time to spend on the net, you have enough time to get a job!
@B Smizzle @lee986321 And your not on KATU.com????? Perhaps you should spend more time with your kids & family, & not stand in judgement of others. Besides what does any of what you said have to do with the two teens??? Just askin'.
Â
I'm retired & no I don't have any kids. I still cant figure out how any of this has
ANYTHING to do with the 2 teens throwing rocks from a freeway overpass??
Â
@dianned  @B  @lee986321 Oh and I don't have kids....but if you do I pay for yours through the nose and will do so tomorrow when I shell out $2700 for property tax.......I collect no assistance....help pay for hers....help pay for schools that kids I don't have don't go to.....and I'm the bad guy.....just asking....I will remember what a bad guy I am tomorrow when I toss $2700 down the drain!
@dianned  @B  @lee986321 I am on KATU, but I don't collect food stamps then complain they aren't enough while spending countless hours on the internet posting messages like lee does!
Â
I have a job, I pay my way....lee, admittedly, does not!  I say spend less time on the internet and more time finding a job to pay your own way.  But then again I am nutty, I think people should take care of themselves and not rely on others.....silly me!
@B Smizzle And who are you to call it? I am a retired sheriff/marshal and some of us have time to make a point unlike you. No one gave you the right to compare what is right...

@B Smizzle Excuse me, can I interest you in some self help classes? It appears that you have issues with how others live and what they do, I have some advice for you..Stick it where the sun don't shine, you haven't a clue to as what I have been through of have done or has happens to me so shut the hell up. Did I make my self clear?
@lee986321 No I think you need some self help classes!  You need to help yourself instead of leaching off society! Â
Â
"Â It appears that you have issues with how others live and what they do"
When you admit to living on my dime while wasting hours on the internet that you could spend finding a job and paying your own way...yeah, you bet! Â
Â
Stick it where the sun don't shine! Â Hahahaha Rich to say the least! Â You can call names but you have no comeback for sound logic...this from the person who is complaining about paying an extra tax on their phone bill, while collecting food stamps!
Â
Spend less time on the internet and more time looking for a job to pay your own way!
@B Smizzle Now how ever these two kids will be on SSI Not SSA as they hadn't done a lick of work as there stupid acts will result in an injury that will lead them unable to work. and you can add them to your list of deadbeats.
@B Smizzle PS at least I am here for my son which I can say for most part is better then some dead beat fathers.Which do you hate more? Dead beat Fathers or Some one on SSA and get you freaking facts straight you idiot, SSA is different then SSI. gese, what an idiot .Can't even get the government program straight.
Parents will not be happy when they have to pay for the damages.
@RalphCramden And wind shields on those cars are not cheap plus, from what I gather, some hi-brids can have very high voltages in them and can kill a person if there is a fault. I found this out when a friend of the family owns a Prius and wound up finding a pack rat inside the thing. she couldn't get the thing out. as they were working on her car after getting the pack rat out, they found tin-foil near a High voltage line. It could have been curtains not just on the rat but for driver as well.
If any one wishes to prove me wrong I will ask this question, just how much voltage does it take to "drive a vehicle"? it sure in hell is not 12 volts, it is several thousand. check you manual if you have e-vehicle or a combo.
Â
They are old enough to know that what they were doing was wrong. They should have been slapped in jail, then go to court. Find a good punishment to fit the crime. What would have happened if the rocks hit someone as they have in the past? What would have happened if a driver lost control of their vehicle? These two kids thought they were being cool, well then let them cool their heels in jail for a bit. Being stupid and attempting to seriously injure someone is a crime.
Their parents need to make sure they make full restitution, and a lot of community service, to perhaps make them wake up to reality.
Â
@Just Lookin Screw that, charge them with attempted murder and let them spend a few years. Can't keep babying them to the point where they think they can do anything they want and only have to do community service in response.
Unless one or both of these two 'kids' are retarded, the blame lies totally with the parents. Barring a tragedy, odds are one or more of the dads are missing, deserted or not the real father to these 'kids' if they even have a father figure around at all. But heck, it's 2012, anything goes now, it's nobody's fault, and nobody's responsible for their actions.
@last boyscout Unless one or both are "retarded" as you say, the fault lies solely with them. 17 is old enough to know right from wrong, especially when it comes to throwing rocks at other people's property. The parents should get the bill, but the teens should do the time.
@last boyscout "arring a tragedy, odds are one or more of the dads are missing"
Â
What if their dad was missing because he is fighting his 6th tour overseas....any double thinking there Mr. Patriot?
@last boyscout Remember Rosa's law about the "R" word. it is now a hate word. And Obama was the one who passed it. I know you weren't trying to offend but, it iis a true law now and it is a Federal law.
@lee986321 Are you serious? Then will Obama foot the bill to have the word 'retarded' removed from ten million or so automotive text books and repair manuals that say something like 'engine timing may be 'retarded' due to ...... It's just a word. I grow a little tired of the word police.
@last boyscout If you want people to be "responsible for their actions", how about starting with the teens themselves???  Parents are not always to blame for their children's bad behavior; and even if the parents bear some responsibility, seventeen-year-olds are definitely old enough to shoulder much of the blame themselves.
@felines99  @last boyscout I agree with last boyscout, men are stronger and don't have a problem with being tough, boys will listen to a strong father. If your kids aren't listening it is because your being a weak parent. I like States where kids and parents serve time together - working off what the kid broke.
Strength has nothing to do with common sense. I have known strong parents, who tried to keep their kids out of trouble. Yet the kids ended doing what they wanted to anyway. This falls on the shoulders of the two kids, who knew without a doubt what they were doing was wrong. These two kids need to face the music, and be responsible for their actions.
@felines99  @last boyscout I have to agree with you felines, My parents were amazing parents, and I still did stupid things when I was young, even when they taught me different. I've grown up and realized what a damn fool I was then, and I don't think parents are always to blame for their stupid children's actions. And 17 is definitely old enough to know that what you are doing is wrong. They should get jail time for this. Someone could have crashed and died had a rock gone through their windshield.
Their parents must be so proud!
let the punishment fit the crime
