Police: Man bought puppy then killed it with kitchen knife
WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- A Wilsonville man bought a Border Collie puppy then hours later stabbed and killed it, sheriff’s deputies said Monday.
Kevin Lee Slabaugh, 28, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree aggravated animal abuse. He made his first appearance by video on Monday afternoon in Clackamas County Circuit Court.
Slabaugh turned himself on Sunday morning in to Clackamas County sheriff’s deputies. He told a 911 dispatcher that he had killed the puppy with a knife the night before, deputies said.
He did not give a motive, but told deputies he had been drinking and taking prescription medications during the killing, according to a press release from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
Questioned at his apartment at Bridge Creek Apartments on Southwest Rose Lane, Slabaugh told deputies repeatedly that he had “bought it and killed it,” referring to a female 2 ½-month-old black Border Bounder puppy, according to the press release.
Deputies verified that Slabaugh had, in fact, purchased the puppy the night before from Critter Cabana pet store in Wilsonville for about $300.
Slabaugh killed the dog several hours after the purchase with a large kitchen knife, deputies said.
“Mr. Slabaugh showed the deputies where he had killed the puppy, as well as where he had hidden the dead body, the knife he had used in the crime, and the clothing he was wearing during the criminal incident,” the press release said.
Slabaugh's neighbor, Mel Barnes, said he saw deputies searching through the trash cans at the apartment complex.
"They went to the trash cans up there. They were looking for something," Barnes said. "the sheriff came back with something he found and put it in his car. What he found, I don't know."
Slabaugh is being held on $50,000 bail.
He declined a request for an interview.

I, just, saw this & had to comment, not realizing it happened in January! Â I wonder what type of punishment this sick SOB got!
I am retired from the Maricopa County Sheriffs office in Phoenix and spend my Summers in Canby....in my 28 years I have seen and heard some sick stuff but this wasted POS takes the Fricken Cake....Please somebody Run his worthless Butt down and if you do it....I can help dispose of the Body, Preferably in the same Dumpster he put the Beautiful Puppy in....I just want to smash his face in , This one touched a nerve...WTF IS WRONG WITH KIDS NOWADAYS !!!!!!
@Terry Lacey Maricopa County Sheriff does not play games!  Too bad this SOB wasn't in Phoenix!  This, just, makes me sick!  We need more punishment for these demented creeps!  This creep should not be allowed on the streets ever again!  He is VERY sick & needs a thorough psychiatric evaluation!  OMG!  WTH makes this creep tick?  I LOVE animals & children!  This creep could possibly kill a child next!  This country should bombard Clackamas County, Ore. with emails!  This creep needs to be locked up & never let out.  If he gets out, I hope someone makes him pay!
All I want to do is smash his face in.
 @Pointblank AMEN
People in this world have lost there compassion for anyone or anything! I would hate to bring a child into this Godless world we now live in! Things like this does not surprise me anymore, so.......very sad!
@BlessedLife This is exactly why my youngest son does not want children.....the sick world we live in!  My oldest has one!  I have 2 great grandbabies & it scares me to death to think anything could happen to them!
I knew people in Wilsonville were suburbanite wierdos, but this?
He was using alcohol and prescription drugs and killed the puppy. Good thing there wasn't a baby in the house.
killing a young animal with a knife; by religious rules this is how Muslims prepare lamb (or any other animal they eat), and nobody has a problem with that, so I don't see what the big deal is here. The animal doesn't know why it is being killed, only that it is being killed with a knife, the trauma to the animal is the same in either case, yet in one case nobody says a peep, and in cases like this people want him to rot in jail for the rest of his life. Confusing.Â
@moej The difference is we are more civilized than Muslims.  Occasionally, we have an incident of a crazy person doing something we consider horrible...the Muslims are still decades behind the civilized world, so they still kill without conscience. Â
Seriously, what is wrong with people!
@CB Wow, @Mike Smith , you sure have a lot of time to criticize. Have fun with that!
I wonder if this is the sicko who posted a picture of a live puppy for sale on craigslist, then later posted the same dog dead a few weeks back. Â I was hoping it was a sick joke, and reported the poster.
What a great man is Kevin to kill a puppy that was just glad to have a forever home. I can only hope my friends at the CCSO jail make it well known that this skel killed an innocent puppy to further whatever is wrong with him. If he gets out anytime soon, he will offend again because it felt like he was in control of life & death for the first time in his life. I have no doubt he has killed animals before and will be one of 300 serial killers roaming the U.S. as time goes on...
Some of the comments are interesting. Some blame the pet store who sold it. Some want pet stores to do home checks, or to have a policy to "NOT" sell to someone if they feel they would not be right for a pet. The first store that told someone they did not feel right selling to them....would probably have a lawsuit within a week.
Â
The individual that did the crime is the one at fault. He mixed medications with alcohol...knowing he should not.
He turned himself in, which is one step in the right direction.
Until a total investigation is completed, the finger pointing should mellow out. Some saying they would shoot him with their gun...A bit extreme actually.
He messed up royally, and he will more than likely pay. If and when the real total story comes out, it will be interesting.
@Just Lookin Background checks and a waiting period for pet buyers will solve the problem.
What a weirdo. People are just sick and crazy nowadays.
there is a special place in hell for you .
Horrific and sickening. What is wrong with people?

@Mike Smith  Fishbait! Phew! Change the worm now and then, okay?
Unless you're trying for catfish. thbbbbbt!
Death penalty. Now.
I have been blessed with several above-average dogs in my lifetime. Border Collies are among my all-time most favorite breeds. This guy has bought himself a very special and most painful place in Hell that I can imagine!
I think this  complete a** of a guy was inspired in his  vying-for-attention evil and pathetic claim-to-fame by the splashy news story  last week about the other  POS  guy who battered and burned the chihuahua in an oven.  This is also what can happen ( and many degrees of loser but bad things) when animals are sold like bottles of laundry detergent out the door, instead of some kind of screening that some shelters actually bother to perform before a pet is adopted. I mostly blame the guy, but Critter Cabana  does sell to whomever walks in the door with cash in hand.  Now I guess we can all wait for more of these stories to happen since it is trending in the news and idiots are inspired by what they see on TV.
Be curious as to what medication he is on, and what it does to a person combined with alcohol. Â Not that it lets him off the hook; seriously, if you knew the mix was risky this was horrifying! Â I feel for the guy - turning himself in and all speaks to his character. Â Who would have known if he hadn't called? Â I will be interested to see how this case shakes out...
Its a good thing he had no little kids he was responsible for! Â If he is capable to do this with a puppy he is with a helpless baby! Â They really need to check this guy out very well, even after his trial, sentence (hopefully time served) and released back in the public.
I am heartsick at not only what happened to this poor innocent creature, but the vitriol that is spewed in the commenting section that veers wildly off topic. Have we lost our humanity, our compassion? It appears so.
Talk about buyers remorse with a hangover
@Bert bert, albert, numerous other names -- is that you?  The boneless brown trout guy?  Welcome, buddy! Â
I went to high school with this scumbag. I hope he gets tossed in a cell with an animal lover who isn't getting out of jail soon.Â
The idiot spent $300 on a freaking dog.. and then killed it?!?
@starshadow You realize mixing alcohol with certain prescription drugs can cause some bizarre behavior, right?  Tell that to granny the next time she has "just a little glass of wine" with her Ambien.
@Sundowner  @starshadow It doesn't matter how much alcohol and prescription drugs you consume; if you stab a puppy to death there is something seriously wrong with you.
@EnoughAlready I'm not holding the pharmaceutical industry up as a shining example of ethical behavior, by far.  But patients have some responsibility to listen to what their pharmacist says, to read accompanying information (comes with every RX dispensed in the country), to pay attention.  That being said, when a person elect to ignore the warnings thinking a little bit of alcohol can't hurt or that combining certain meds won't do anything bad.  Just ask Heath Ledger.  Oh, wait.........
Â
The FDA just took a stand regarding Ambien/Zolpidem a few weeks ago: Â http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/777431
@Sundowner  @dreinin86  @starshadow Oh, it couldn't be that, the pharmaceutical industry tinkers with brain chemistry all the time and they know how every individual will react. There has even been a history of a generic substitutes not being the same chemical, such as budeprion late last year, so they're out there with no clinical trials at all.
@dreinin86  @starshadow Yes, the guy's seriously loopy.  But read up on the side effects of Ambien, and those don't even take alcohol into account.  Read up on bizarre behavior of those who take meds for bipolar disorder...every single one of their meds have warnings not to mix it with alcohol.  Â

@Mike Smith I think it's med time.....seems you skipped a couple of doses there "mike"
 @deejm2112  @Mike Smith Mike Smith = Troll
@Mike Smith Ehhh...I used to like some of your comments back in the day when I was somebody else on here.  You were occasionally funny and insightful.  But now it's turned into typical troll stuff....I think I and 'someone who shall remain nameless' outed you on another site recently....sometimes you make this too easy. Â
@Mike Smith Figured it was you. Hope that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
@Mike Smith Love is a pretty strong word, especially in your case.
@deejm2112  @scoreboard  @Mike Smith We all know he's Fishbait, right?  This isn't rocket science, despite him deleting posts to hide.
@scoreboard  @Mike Smith I know, it's creepy that someone can put that kind of effort on it....if he could only use his powers for good....
This is a making for a serial killer. get him off the street and prevent a Murder form committing a murder. Any one slaying an animal in this method needs to be removed an locked up with the key tossed. I can't say what I really want to say. Lets say it is not fitting for public debate.
@lee986321 Unfortunately the penalties for animal abuse are not stiff enough, he will probably get a slap on the wrist and some community service...... SAD
Seriously, Katu? WTF is a Border Bounder Puppy?
Â
Proof reading: Ain't nobody got time for that.

@Mike Smith ....you can't save it until you become part of it. Next time around Pluto, radio in and let us know how much longer you'll be in outer space. No one will care of course.
The penalties for animal abuse/cruelty, of which should really be renamed since they barely scratch the surface in most cases, should be on par with manslaughter or something similar. This sick POS needs to be put down or doused with gasoline and set alight.Â
I have fostered for rescues for many years now and this has always been a fear of mine. No matter how hard you screen people who adopt (or in this case "buy") the animals, you NEVER really know what the person's motive is. One of my fosters was adopted out to a doctor at a local hospital who I found out several months later had actually fraudulently adopted the dog using their name for a friend of theirs, who our organization had previously DENIED.  I have seen the good and bad of people. This just sickens me to think what this jerk did to this poor puppy. It doesn't matter how high he was when he did it. There is no excuse for it, and I hope he is prosecuted to the FULL extent of the law.Â
@TruthSpeaker I agree with your hope that Slabaugh is prosecuted to the "FULL extent of the law"...  My issue is that the "full extent of the law" doesn't go far enough... I think we need to SERIOUSLY overhaul our charges and sentencing with regard to crimes committed against animals.  Â
@margay1 I totally agree with you. We definitely need to revamp the animal cruelty laws as they do not really even come close to punishment for the crimes committed. I just hope they do not let this guy off easy because he was "under the influence."Â
