PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police officers arrested a man on Monday who they said attacked a woman as she walked on a trail at the Hoyt Arboretum a day earlier.
Michelle Dickson told police a man followed her from the parking lot and grabbed her while she walked in the arboretum around 11 on Sunday morning.
She was able to scream, fight back and get away.
Officers scoured the area after the attack. On Monday, park rangers got a tip from the Oregon Zoo's security manager about a man camping nearby.
The rangers identified him as a possible suspect and called police. Officers moved in and arrested 24-year-old Kenneth Wayne Couch, who they say was the attacker.
He was charged with robbery, strangulation and rape and taken to jail.
Lt. Robert King with the Portland Police Bureau said the rape charge stems from a separate incident in Gresham, although he didn't immediately have more details.
Police said Couch had been living in a tent near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which is near the end of the trail.
The attack happened near the memorial, not far from the Oregon Zoo parking lot.
Dickson said the man came up behind her, grabbed her neck and then tried to cover her mouth when she started screaming.
“I was just counting on the fact that people would hear and would come and that worked out,” she said.
Dickson said she has never screamed so loud in her life and didn’t even realize she was capable of it.
“People told me they thought I was an animal. They didn’t even think it was human,” she said. “They thought a chimp had gotten out of the zoo. It was just so high pitched; it was just sort of instinctive.”
See...this man should never be released from prison...or execute him...don't let him out to do this again... Good job Ranger and Police...Thank You !!!!......DA..do not let us Down Please.....
There's thousands of other homeless people in those woods camping out.....
Why aren't your homeless programs working? The POVERTY PIMPS sure do have lots of taxpayer money to fund their OBSCENE paychecks, benefits, and pensions, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for housing & training for the homeless....
And people want to ban guns because?
I hope they have something better for evidence aside from the fact that he was living near the Viet Nam Memorial.
@Philip Marlowe Use your brain! I am sure they had the woman stick around to identify him.
Â
I am more interestd in the rape in gresham. Unless they already had an APB or warrant out for him in connection with that rape, i dont know how they figured that out so fast. I guess he could have confessed to both. Both unlike cSI no one precesses DNA that fast.
Â
Wouldn't be the first time criminals confess or commit crimes to get off the streets. So this is Portlands homeless plan they spend so much money on. Dont actually help them and wait for them to be arrested to get off the streets.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but what can this guy be charged with? Harassment? Attempted assault? I'm glad it ended the way that it did, but unless this guy admits to what he had planned he will only get a slap on the wrist.
@Scotty9 My guess would be at least felony assault charge since he actually grabbed her.  He'll also probably be charged with strangulation since he was choking her by the neck.  Perhaps some kind of kidnapping charge?  I'm sure that the Portland Police can think of all kinds of things to charge this scumbag with.
âPeople told me they thought I was an animal. They didnât even think it was human,â she said. âThey thought a chimp had gotten out of the zoo."
Â
She wan't the animal. He is. A frontal lobotomy should fix him up just right.
I was right - it was a vagrant. Â That reminds me of this story:

Pack a gun. Well worth it. Police won't get to you in time if he had kept up the attack.
Shouldn't he be camped out in front of City Hall protesting his sorry state?
good job, hope he's still touchy feelie when he gets to jail
@Phuzz They will probably have to pressure wash him first...Â
