Police car, left in gear, rolls over suspect during arrest

PORTLAND, Ore. – A Portland police car rolled over a suspect after an officer left it in gear when he got out to assist with an arrest Monday night.
Jimmy Miles Duffey, 31, was injured, but is expected to survive, police said.
According to Sgt. Pete Simpson, officers saw Duffey jaywalk downtown near Southwest 12th Avenue and Columbia Street at around 8:40 p.m.
Duffey ran away when officers tried to talk to him, Simpson said.
An officer caught Duffey near Southwest Park Avenue and Main Street. While the officer was taking Duffey into custody, another officer arrived in his patrol car to help, but he left his car in gear when he got out.
The car rolled over Duffey, who was lying on the ground.
Duffey was taken to a hospital. He was later released and taken to the Multnomah County Jail.
Police later determined Duffey had a warrant for his arrest. He faces charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer.
The Portland Police Bureau's Traffic Division is investigating the incident and will forward results to the Collision Review Board.
Did the dummy think the car was going to put itself in park?
Arriving on scene the officer determined that this suspect had not been shot yet and was still alive. Attempting to remedy the situation he leaves his vehicle in gear and exits the the vehicle. Aforementioned vehicle rolls over suspect yet fails to fatally injure the perp. C'mon guys....you're going to lose your rep!
Rule No.1
Â
When flying an airplane DON"T SHUT OFF THE ENGINES
Â
When parking a car TURN OFF THE ENGINE
 @Lost River If your overhead lights are on you never turn off the engine unless you want your battery to die in 5 minutes.  Not sure if things are different with the new LED overhead lights but back in my day cutting the engine with overhead lights on meant you were an idiot.
pORTLAND IS FAMOUS FOR THEIR KEYSTONE COPS.....
I have no sympathy for Mr. Duffey and he should be held responsible for any damages caused by his actions. On the other side of this issue, I believe cops are supposed to be smarter and more professional than the idiots they often arrest. The officers' mistake could have had significantly worse consequences leading to a frivolous law suit which would be paid for with our tax money.
As for the lawsuit, who wants to be on the jury? This mope ran from the police due to a warrant for his arrest and created a hazard that led to his accidental and minor injury. As a juror, would you award him a huge sum of money?
I feel bad for the cops and all of the paperwork they now have to do. Â Also, I hope it didn't damage the wheel alignment of the car... poor car.
Â
Â
Oh dear lord, it took me a moment to catch my breath...
Â
If the guy hadn't been running away from the police in the first place, the second cop probably wouldn't have even been necessary. I have to say, I have no sympathy for him.
Another victim of the police state.
Looks like more racial profiling to me. I realize he was arrested on out standing warrants, however the police would have not known about the warrants had they not stopped him for jay-walking. If this had been a white man in a business suit, the police would have just ignored the jay-walking. I'm sure of this. I am a 42 year old white guy who I has jay-walked many times in my life, and I have never been approached by the police for doing so.
 @ShawninVanWA I have a few friends who have been stopped (and two have been cited) for jay-walking... and all of them are white. I don't understand why everything has to be about race...
 @ShawninVanWA I hate to say it, but stating that this was because he wasn't a white guy in a suit IS more-so racial profiling than what actually took place here.
Â
Pot...Kettle....
Â
...Black!!
 @ShawninVanWA So what are you saying? That people who've absconded from justice should dress as white guys in suits? Cops profile behavior. And often get it right. This guy was probably sending up tons of red flags, his race being the least. Still doesn't mean it's okay to run him over. That would be awful, laying there helpless. That officer needs to slow down.
 @Lips Hey Lips, hey ...... hey ... hey, Lips .... Lips, I agree with you ... Lips? .... hey, Lips ........ I agree ..... not cool at all, Lips ...... but we're cool, right? ..... I need you to acknowledge me, or not, it's cool ..... hey Lips, I agree ............. Lips??!?  Yeah, we're cool. This guy, not so much. But we are. Hey, Lips....
 @badcatAs cool as a witches nipple, for sure.
 @Lips  @ShawninVanWA I have to agree with Lips on this Handcuffed and ran over, not cool.
He's going to change his name to Jimmy "Smiles" when he gets that settlement we all will pay for...
freaking illiterate people commenting with out reading or understanding what he was arrested for, go back and re-read
Â
Jaywalking should not be a crime.
 @disgustedman@Old29Â
Why not? Do you realize what a pain in the derriere it is for drivers who are just trying to be careful and people cross the street whenever the heck they feel like it? Downtown Portland is terrible when it comes to jaywalkers.Â
 @Old29 Actually there is no such thing as a jaywalking in Oregon.Â
@Old29 read!!!!!!!!!!!!! he wasn't arrested for the jay walking
Â
 @franksbeans  @Old29 Relax yourself. I wasn't commenting on the specific, I was commenting on the general.
It is not a crime. It is an "infraction" and a jaywalker can be ticketed, just like someone who makes an illegal left turn or runs a stop sign.,
 @Mechanic My dictionary defines both crime and infraction in the same language, i.e., an action that may be punishable by law.
 @Old29  @Mechanic Buy a new dictionary.
 @Old29
Â
I disagree.
Â
Indeed i feel it should be MORE of a crime.
Â
In my area the only people who seem to get hit are walking at night, in an unlighted part of the street (and that's a LOT of places) jaywalking in some fashion.
Â
If pedestrians followed the rules I would be yelling at my windshield less.
Â
 @Old29 No it shouldn't. Getting hit, if that happens, should be punishment enough.
@Jamie @Old29
Again. . . . Just like wearing a helmet -- if it was only you that was involved that would be one thing, but it's not just you... somebody else has to live with the results of jaywalkers being idiots.
@tcm exactly. A citation is a reasonable response to a potentialy hazardous action.
@Jamie @Old29
Â
Except when you do get hit, it involves more people than just you.
Well...the guy was under arrest and he got served. Â The motto is "Protect and Serve" not "Protect and Swerve".
What a great story!Â
Arg, I wish this had happened during a child abuser arrest!
@The_AnnaCannard  He already had a warrant. It might have been for child abuse or something just as deserving.
Arrested for jaywalking? Man, that's a first. I see people doing that every single day and the police do nothing.
@Jamie He wasn't arrested for jaywalking. He was arrested because he fled and because he had outstanding warrants. A jaywalker gets, usually a "talking to," or at worsta ticket.
 @Jamie
Stopped for jaywalking (a violation), but arrested because of an arrest warrant. Probably picked out for a chippy jaywalking stop due to looking like a dirtbag with a warrant.. Good police work as far as I'm concerned.Â
@StealthActivist @Jamie Roger that.
 @StealthActivist They drag lots of people into the jail to get fingerprints and such and then release them.
 @Jamie A cop would have to see it before he/she could do anything about it. Why don't you make a citizens arrest if you are so much better?
 @swimbad Why? Simple because I don't care. It seems like a pretty trivial crime to arrest someone for. I know for a fact they do actually arrest you, drag you to the jail, and then release you. If a person isn't paying attention and gets hit, that's their problem.
Jamie, Jamie, Jamie. He wasn't arrested for jaywalking. Read the story, then use your head, OK?
 @Jamie Coincidentally, I received a citation for jaywalking at this same location, S.W. 12th and Columbia -- long ago. I had to go downtown to view a video on what can happen to jaywalkers if they get hit by a car. Blood and gore.
@felines99 @Jamie when my wife was a kid the judge made her write an essay on the difference between "jaywalking" and "crossing against a signal."
Car-ma.
Ouch!! Call my lawyer, then the doctor...in that order!!
Wow. Â I just broke my irony meter on this one.
Freeze or I will run you over!
Stop or I'll drive!!!
