Police: Whitney Heichel's body found; suspect arrested
GRESHAM, Ore. - Police announced Friday night in a somber news conference that they had found the body of missing 21-year-old Whitney Heichel on Larch Mountain and had made an arrest in the case.

Police arrested 24-year-old Jonathan Daniel Holt, of Gresham, on a charge of aggravated murder after a series of interviews with Holt.
The case will be prosecuted in Clackamas County. The venue was changed to the county where the murder took place, police said.
Holt is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Police said they received information that led them to Holt, who they said was an acquaintance of Whitney and her husband, Clint. Police also said that he lived in the same apartment complex as the couple.
Whitney Heichel left for her job at a Starbucks Tuesday morning and disappeared. Her SUV was found at 11:17 a.m. that day in the parking lot of a Wood Village Walmart.
Police said detectives found her personal belongings in a dumpster in a nearby shopping center. On Wednesday, a church-organized search team found a license plate and other evidence on Larch Mountain.
On Thursday, police found additional evidence from Heichel's SUV on Larch Mountain. And on Friday, police said crime lab evidence tied Holt to her vehicle.
During interviews with Holt, police said there were inconsistencies in his story. They said during a Thursday interview they were able to obtain his fingerprints and DNA.
At the same time Holt voluntarily came in for an additional interview Friday evening, police said investigators discovered Heichel’s body. Holt was also arrested at about that time, police said.
A Multnomah County medical examiner vehicle was observed arriving at Larch Mountain shortly
before 9 p.m., about an hour before police held their news conference.
Gresham Police said they are still gathering information and evidence in the case. They ask anyone with helpful information to call the tip line at 503-618-2719.
Family spokesman Jim Vaughn expressed the family's sadness that he said could not possibly be described in words.
"(Whitney) touched everyone she met, because she had a beautiful personality," he said. "She was warm; she was kind; she was everything you would want in a friend, an acquaintance or relative or spiritual fellow worshipper."
He said calls and messages of help and support poured in from all over the world. He said the family especially appreciated the prayers. He thanked the community for its support and the members of law enforcement whom had helped in the case.
"We would like to have seen a happy conclusion, but it's not," he said. "We will heal because of the love we have for each other, and the support that we have from family, friends and even ones we don't know that have reached out to help."
Police did not take any questions from reporters Friday night.
Heichel's friends organized a candlelight vigil on Facebook for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. outside the Oregon Trail Starbucks location in Gresham. Those who attend are encouraged to wear yellow to show their support for the Heichel family.
Heichel's cell phone
Heichel’s cell phone was found Thursday night by two girls outside a Troutdale apartment complex.
After its discovery, detectives zeroed in on the woods behind the Troutdale Terrace Apartments, which are 3.7 miles from Heichel’s apartment.
Search teams and a police dog combed the woods and bushes for several hours at the complex Friday morning in an attempt to discover how Heichel’s phone ended up in a blackberry bush there.
Detectives left around noon and did not seal off the area. Presumably, they didn't find anything else significant. But detectives resumed their search later in the day.
Neighbors said about a half dozen kids were building a fort in the woods Thursday night when two girls, ages 9 and 11, heard Heichel’s cell phone ringing.
The 9-year-old, Alexis Maxwell, found the smartphone lying in the dirt near the edge of the paved lot.
"The face of it was up. It was still turned off, but it was still making noise," she said. "I think someone threw it and it landed face up."
She said the phone was locked so she and her sister gave it to their mom.
"They said, 'Look at the picture, and I looked and saw her right away and I just knew it was her," said April Fletcher.
She said she immediately told her kids to stop touching the phone and called police.
"I'm just shocked and I'm really proud of my girls for doing what they did. I mean, they could have done anything. They could have broke it or just not thought of anything and just threw it back down there," she said.
During a Friday afternoon news conference, Gresham police Lt. Claudio Grandjean said the phone contained text messages from Heichel's family members, including her husband, asking about her whereabouts.
KATU News reporter Patrick Preston contributed to this report.
Watch Friday night's news conference:
Previous story from Friday.
GRESHAM, Ore. – Detectives are diligently working to piece together what happened to a 21-year-old woman who left for work Tuesday morning and disappeared.
Another search of Larch Mountain continued late into the afternoon Friday and investigators were busy analyzing Whitney Heichel’s cell phone, which was found Thursday by two girls outside a Troutdale apartment complex.
During an afternoon news conference, Gresham police Lt. Claudio Grandjean was hopeful Heichel’s cell phone, which is a smartphone, would provide clues to her disappearance, especially any GPS information it may provide detectives.
He said the phone was found turned off but contained text messages from her family members, including her husband, Clint, asking about her whereabouts.
Grandjean said he was pleased with the results investigators were getting back from Heichel’s cell phone as well as her SUV, which was found the morning she disappeared at 11:17 in a Walmart parking lot with its passenger-side window smashed.
He said the evidence investigators have gathered so far is telling a story about what happened to Heichel but could not divulge the details at this time.
"I'm not going to speak on what kind of evidence we have, but we're very, very pleased with what we've been getting back. It's been very helpful and has given us some direction in the investigation," he said, adding later that "the forensic evidence tells us a story. That story's best told in the lab.”
Detectives have zeroed in on the woods behind the Troutdale Terrace Apartments, which are 3.7 miles from Heichel’s apartment.
Search teams and a police dog combed the woods and bushes for several hours at the complex Friday morning in an attempt to discover how Heichel’s phone ended up in a blackberry bush there.
Detectives left around noon and did not seal off the area. Presumably, they didn't find anything else significant. But Grandjean said detectives were not finished searching the complex. They returned later in the day.
Neighbors said about a half dozen kids were building a fort in the woods Thursday night when two girls, ages 9 and 11, heard Heichel’s cell phone ringing. While Grandjean said the phone was found off, it was not immediately clear why there may be a discrepancy.
"What I was told by one little girl, they found a bunch of wood and decided to build a fort, playground thing. The phone started ringing and they picked it up. They opened it. One of the older girls recognized the girl from the news and ran it to their mom," said Stephanie Schubert who talked to girls playing near the apartment.
Heichel's husband, Clint, has revealed clues to KATU about his wife's disappearance that police won't comment on or aren't confirming.
Clint Heichel said the inside of Whitney's SUV was a mess when it was discovered. A dangling bead decoration had been ripped off the mirror, and the back seats were down, which was odd.
He said a rubber mat and the carpet was on top of the seats as if something had been moved.
Clint also said he saw the surveillance video at the Shell station on 257th that showed Whitney's Explorer pulling in, coming from the direction of where her cell phone was found.
"She was pulling in from the Troutdale road side, which is completely opposite of where we live – it's in the opposite direction: there's no reasonable, there's no reason she should be coming up from there, and it was at 9:13, I think it was, when her truck pulled in there," he said. "You couldn't see who was driving, but there's a couple distinct things about her car, and everyone knows their own car."
Clint said bank records show Whitney's ATM card was also used at the T/A truck stop in Troutdale within eight minutes of it being used at the Shell station. He said an employee there recognized Whitney's Explorer and said she was in the passenger seat and a man was driving.
Police said they only have proof of Whitney's Explorer at the Shell station and her ATM card being used there.
Anyone with information on Heichel should call the Gresham police tip line 503-618-2719.

Please read. THANK YOU.
This is so sad! I hope that guy gets what he deserves because no one can replace her. They lost their daughter, a wife and friend. I never knew the girl but it breaks my heart.

You, Sir, are an opportunist seeking self glory. Such a shame. I have the facsimile copy of the dead Sea Scrolls and I can tell you that if were you truely interested in this family's tragedy you wouldn't be showcasing your flippant remarks regarding the neither those writings or quoting scriptures to people who have them memorized. True colors are not hard to distinguish.@
I am just stunned that somone could do something like that to such a lovely person. I would bet a dollar to a diamond that she never hurt anyone in her life. I am so saddened by this. Love and hugs to all. Someone stole a wonderful person from us. All I can say is LOVE... Let us be good witnesses to her life.
The same reason I do not go out into the driveway and watch my wife leave for work every night . It is beyond comprehension that someone might be outside stalking a member of my family ,so I and WE take it for granted every day that life is normal and the violence happening around us would actually end up on our doorstep ,and much worse to a member of our FAMILY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Â
As a former longtime employee of Starbucks and Jehovah Witness family, this case was hard for me not to ignore. I try not to watch the news, but prayed everyday that they would find this young lady safe and free from harm and found myself googling her name everyday. My prayers and thoughts are with her Husband, family and congregation at this time praying that they find comfort and support in knowing that everyone in the nation who was following this story is still with them in sorrow,[prayers] and support and that they are not alone. I wish that I could wrap my arms around them and take away their pain, somehow. This news was truly sad and hit so close to home.
@Tanya Rochelle Johnson I have followed this case all week. My family and I ache for Whitneys family. The hope of the resurrection for JW's is comforting but never the less a loss like this is painful and heartbreaking. Many of her congregation family and many who just care pray for Clint and the family.

It is really sad that less than 24 hours after they announced finding Whitney on here the board has disintegrated into furthering personal agendas and arguments about theology. Â Is it impossible to just grieve for the loss of life without including me, me, me, I, I, I...or is making it personal your way of grieving? Â I will say again what I said last night: Â My sincerest, heartfelt condolences go out to Whitney's husband and her family for their tremendous loss. Â Nothing will ever change the pain of what has happened, but may time lessen the grief in their hearts and allow them to move forward and honor her memory by living happy, fulfilled lives.
All good and well Whitney was a J.W. Hear tell Holt was a J.W as well.I just want to know or wonder why wonderful husband Clint chose not to get up and escort Whitney to her car that dark ,cold , misty morning.Anyone know ??
@Tami Chavez The same reason I do not go out into the driveway and watch my wife leave for work every night .
@Tami Chavez You're back insinuating again?  Could you just leave your nastiness at the door?  CL has an area for conspiracy theories and running ones mouth on random topics:  It's called the rants section.  Maybe you could spew your anger and suspicion there?  A life was lost and because it hit so close to home, many are grieving.  If something else comes out of the investigation or involves other people it will come to the forefront at some point.  Until then--LEAVE IT ALONE.
 @Melissa Stidham-Clary  @Tami Chavez Thank you Malissa!
Given the fact that the passenger window was broken and the cab was a mess, I'd like to think Whitney put up quite a fight. I've heard it said and I completely agree that there should never be a second crime scene. if you're abducted by a stranger, or even someone you know, you fight like hell, you grab the wheel, you jump from the car, you steer the car into a tree if need be. If you're going to die, better to die on your own terms then allow some monster to have their way with you. If they're going to shoot you, better to make them do it at the gas station then out in the middle of a forest.
There are a few people on this forum who need to stick their heads in a bucket of ice water. Â Geesh people, a young life was cut short. No matter WHAT you believe, have some respect for that, stop arguing with each other and honor the dead! And once you are done with that, GET A LIFE!
Has there been anything said about how she died? Or any motive for this? My heart just sank this morning when I learned they found her.Â
@mjoh They've said they don't want to release all those kinds of details yet.
Christians & other theists: why didn't your god(s) prevent this from happening in the first place?
it's called tact....you really ought to try it some time.

@Dustin My book? You mean the original Greek text? Are you not suppose to be witnessing to me? Send someone to Oregon City and I'll gladly share the truth with them as well. It was nice sharing a multitude of bible facts with you and getting nothing in return. If you expect to come here and witness then you should be prepared for those who know the truth of your NWT. Its full of falsehoods, words added here and there and everywhere., words being removed, it goes on and on. I encouage you to do the research yourself. once you dive in you will be shocked at what you find. God Bless you Dustin, I hope you find the truth someday.
@Dustin You care that they are annoyed? I'm sorry to tell you this but I can give you a multitude of examples of the NWT replacing or adding or changing translation from the original Greek text. Dont hide behind the "orginization" open your mind to the truth.Â
@Dustin By the way, I applaud you for making changes. We all struggle with temptation and sin.
Â
Romans 10:9-11 Â If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with your heart you believe and are put right with God, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in Him will never be put to shame."
Â
1 John 1:3-4 Â That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. We write these things to you that your joy may be full.
Â
You see Dustin, its not by works that God loves us, its by faith. Jesus taught love and hope, not bondage. Jesus didn't die for fun, he died for us. Why would he die such a horrible death and then oh by the way, its gonna take a lifetime of work to be connsidered? God knows our struggle, he is the one that gave us free will. If he is all loving and wants all his children to be saved then why would he make it so darn difficult? Food for thought.
oops, you're warned againt reading anything negative.
Â
@Dustin I do my due dilagence, I would just like to discuss a few things with you. For instance, in proverbs 30:6 God warns us to add nothing to his word yet the NWT is a gross misrepresention of the original Greek text. Just one of many many examples is that the NWT has added the name Jehovah over 200 times in their text yet in 5000+ transcripts we have from the original Greek texts it never once mentions the name Jehovah? We can e-mail and have a very fun theological discussion. I know you warned against reading anything negative about your orginization but God willing you will open your heart and mind and atleast hear what I have to tell you. E-mail?Â
@Dustin Wait, are you allowed to have an e-mail or would that disqualify you from the chance to join the "little flock"? Are you allowed to have such a conversation with a "whorldy" person?
@Dustin @Freethinker Dustin, what is your e-mail address? I would love to have a theological talk with you.
@Freethinker One reason is because God gave us free will. Theoretically, consider this: On day one you go to a church and do a head count. On day two God shows up. He cures all diseases, solves all of Mankind's problems, turns the sun blue and the moon plaid, and works other various miracles so that everyone will know he is real. On day three you go back to the church and do a head count. Of course you are going to find more people at the church on day three than you did on day one.
Â
Hopefully you can see that the people who did not go to church on day one had more free will than they did on day three. One of the reasons why God doesn't fix all of the problems in the world, because we would then know he existed, and knowing he existed would inhibit the use of our free will. I cannot deny that atheists do make the most use of free will.
@USA_FAN  So this happened as a result of Whitney's free will? I would think she might have preferred some other outcome.
@USA_FAN So what you're saying is that your god valued the perpetrator's will to kill more than he valued the victim's will to live?
@Freethinker Yeah...thats what I said. You know darn well I meant that sick freaks free will. Good grief freethinker, do you really believe any sane human would imply such nonsense? I bet you're a liberal arnt you? Typical Â
I see nothing wrong with people expressing their personal beliefs. Its ones own problem if they choose to be offended by this. For the record, I am not a JW but I am a believer in Christ and its sad the hate these people recieve for their beliefs. By the JW's, did the Lord not associate with the "whorldy"? I pray that you will be enlightened and start to understand the scriptures the correct way : )

@Dustin Its not about winning, I care about a member of the body of Christ.
@Dustin You've made my point for me Dustin, at the end of this verse it says
Â
"In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish."
Â
You see? God wants all in his Kingdom, he doesnt hand pick a few and write the rest off into oblivion. Its the reason Jesus died for us. He didnt die for a few, he died for ALL that are willing to accept it. I can show you many verses that prove this fact and for that matter the diety of Jesus. You dont need help to understand the scriptures, for example:
Â
At John 16:13, Jesus promises to send the âSpirit of Truthâ who guides believers âinto all the truth,â and at 1 John 2:27, Christians are told that they âdo not need anyoneâ to teach them because they have Godâs anointing teaching them âabout all things.â If we have the Holy Spirit to teach us, why do we need Watchtower literature?
Â
At Matthew 23:8-10, Jesus proclaims that Christians are not to call anyone âRabbiâ which means âTeacherâ or have anyone as âLeaderâ because Christians have one teacher being the Holy Spirit and one Leader being Christ. Since Jehovahâs Witnesses are taught to look to the âGoverning Bodyâ of the Watchtower as their âteacherâ and the only âchannelâ through whom spiritual instruction is to be given, how can this not be a violation of Jesusâ command here at Matthew 23?
Â
If God is a loving God and He wants all to be saved, why would He make the Bible so complicated that we would need the âhelpâ and guidance of an organization to understand His truth?

@Dustin ...to be clear, is JEHOVAH the name of the kid who found the phone?
@str1ngb3nd3r  @Dustin ...and Jehovah wanted the children to find the phone.... but he stood by and "witnessed" the perpetrator's act without stepping in to protect Whitney?
@Freethinker  @str1ngb3nd3r  @Dustin Your a stooge and I put a hole two chapters on here for you to read and figure this out some time ago. In World War 2 this guy named Hitler mad a bad chice to kill tons of Jews and why he was at it he thought he would pick on Jehovah's People why he was at it. As this is Satin's world at this point in history he got away with tons and tons of stuff just like this murderer got away with taking a life....Jehovah has a blueprint of EVERYBODY in his head. He knows how meany hears or on your head and has named every star he can REMEMBER dead people. More then that he has the POWER to restore there life to them but not before he wipes these evil people off the planet. Jehovah allows the Governments to rule and to give some order of Justice. Once he allowed Babylon to destroy the Nation of Isrial at that point it was his Nation. Anyway so Hitler was warned to stop his persecution of Jehovah's People. Soon after he was overthrown. God has acted time and time and time agine in behalf of his people on Earth in the Courts around the world. Look up Hayden Covington he is a famous Witness attorney who does not take credit for his record setting victorys in the Supreme Court. He gives all credit to Jehovah.... You ever hear of a guy named Dwight D Eisenhower? He was not a Jehovah's Witness but was rased one and is famed for his organizational skills and a little something called D Day. Wonder why a Bible Students son led the invasion of Hitlers Germany??? Jehovah may not step in at this point but he does see Justice served! And soon his son WILL step in to this, and you will beat your chest in lamination. Matthew 24 29-31, 51 Daniel 7 13,14 Revelation 1 7,8..... At that point he will not remember the ones who die in that day. As you will know that Jesus acts in behalf of his Father Jehovah but by the point most accept this to be true is too late. For some of us this message is freedom for us, and a happy prospect for our future to look towards. That day evil will be cut away from this Earth and then and only then can Jehovah and Jesus awake all the dead that died before that day. Like Whitney and your Grate Grandfather and my dead loved ones. If you live through that day you can be there to greet them and tell them where they are and what wonderful news that has happened and show them the glory of Jehovah's love and forgiveness. Second Timothy 4 1-4 <------I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus who is destined to judge the living and the dead and by his manifestation and his kingdom, preach the word. Be at it urgently in favorable season in troublesome season REPROVE REPRIMAND EXHORT with all long suffering and art of teaching. For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful reaching but in accord with their own desires they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have there ears tickled and they will turn there ears away from THE TRUTH whereas they will be turned aside to false stories.Â
Whitney, you're in GODs' heavenly kingdom and resting in the arms of the LORD. You were taken way too early in life, but you're an ANGEL in Heaven now. I pray for comfort and peace for your family and friends and for the LORD to give them strength to deal with your passing. I will also pray that justice is quickly served to the person or persons that are involved in this heinous crime against you.
Has anyone suggested a motive for this young man to do such a sad and horrible deed?
Â
@The Gramster I am sure she fought HIM with all she could ,that is why he killed her !!!!!!!!!!!!
@The Gramster THAT is easy . HE saw what is not his and coveted and sin when dwelled upon becomes alive !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank goodness! I knew I wasn't the only one on here tired of being preached to!
I knew in my heart from the begining that Whitney's husband had nothing to do with that and I truly believed she would be returned alive and I am so desperately sorry the later did not happen.  My heart ache's for this whole family. This was a beautiful young lady that had barely had a chance to live, this is horrably sad.. I prayed and prayed, I am so sorry. I will now pray Whitney's husband, her family and friends can somehow find some peace......... Whitney, rest in peace sweety........
I am heartbroken for Whitney and her family. Please, though, to all the Witnesses...You are making yourselves look foolish by the hardcore preaching (one poster in particular) The family is most likely not getting the comfort they need from the KATU story comments section. All the scriptures and blah blah blah that you are posting looks tacky, and makes you look somewhat cultish. Many people realize that the WT Society does fit the definition of a cult, so think about that before you post. And I sincerely hope you JWs who post a scripture or two are not "counting your time" - Yes, to all non JWs this religion requires them to fill out a slip every month to record their preaching time. NICE huh
@Tonya70 ~ Excellent post, Tonya...  I agree with you that posters utilizing a public comments forum like this to preach really detracts from their image.  One of the things I dislike most about what I call "organized religion" is that each and every one of these groups is 100% absolutely SURE that theirs is the one and ONLY "Truth".. and everybody else is wrong.   (Personally, I think they sound like certain of our current political parties...)   People are free in this country to believe whatever gives them hope and comfort... but they ALSO need to respect those people who do not share their beliefs, and they need to respect those people who do not wish to be "converted", "saved", or whatever... part of that respect is in NOT "sermonizing" when it is inappropriate to do so.  Â
Â
The fact that Whitney Heichel was a JW does not affect my feelings in any way about what happened to her, and I sincerely hope that their chosen faith gives her family and friends comfort at a time when they truly need it. Â
During this time, like many of you, I've realized just how helpless we are when wanting to do something to positively effect events. I couldn't help, not a bit. I decided to declare today, and every day in the foreseeable future "Whitney Day" to honor some of the good this world has lost. I will try and be nice to each person I encounter, even the ones who don't seem to want it. I can't help Whitney or her loved ones, but I can honor her memory and her life by not adding to the hate and animosity in this world. My Mom always taught us, "It don't cost a thing to be nice." I'm honoring her memory as well. May God be with you.

based and managed with voluntary donations no collections are ever taken, beleive me most of us are poor and our time in the ministry is ours to but again this is suppose to encourage the family not bring them down.
@Laura Will you knock it off with all your religion lecturing!!! Every person has the right to their own opinion and should not be bombarded with your statements furthering "your" cause which is completely off topic and nobody really cares to that that at a time like this. This tragedy is about a beautiful 21 year old girl that barely started to live, her husband and her family - not 'ANYONE'S RELIGION'. If you see the word "God" and you don't like it, replace it with whatever makes sense to you but you don't need to turn this into that kind of a debate. It's downright disrepectful.......l
About disrespectful I think it terrible that someone can't share something that they feel may encourage berieved family members and I have no personal cause Whittney's family are Witnesses and I thought of only them with my first coment and hope they will not read the hatred displayed toward their spiritual brothers and sisters here. Like Whitney I work with the public many who do not know I am a Witness and I care about many people. But I will not write again I was mistaken that this was a sight for the berieved family members it has only displaid the hatred which Jesus said his followers should expect as he too was hated. And no I have not been counting my "time." I truely feel for the family and have heardly slept and now there is another missing woman to think of a scary thing for any woman no matter race religion ect. I was not trying to lecture anyone and I hope the best for all who have been truely supportive of this family in their grief stricken time. Your right it is about a 21 year old women who had family friends both Witness and non-witness who cared about her and are probably going through the worst times of there lives and you are worried about opinions.
@badcat Let's be classy and not encourge this any further...
