VANCOUVER, Wash. – Police have arrested a Vancouver man and woman who they say absconded with their 5-month-old son who had been in protective custody.
Summer Smith, 36, was arrested Saturday on outstanding warrants after police tracked her down at a home on W. 19th St. in Vancouver.
Kasey R. McKernan, 31, was arrested early Sunday morning, Vancouver police said.
Portland police found McKernan near Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 112th Avenue at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. He's being held in the Multnomah County Jail and is expected to be moved to Clark County.
Their son, Jaxon Smith, was placed back into custody by child protective services.
Police said McKernan, assaulted a CPS worker last month, grabbed Jaxon and took off in a car Smith was driving.
Also arrested Saturday was John Maxwell, 49, who was at the home where Smith was hiding. Maxwell was arrested on outstanding warrants.
Police said they anticipate arresting more people who helped hide Jaxon from law enforcement.
