David Charles Eklund died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Oct. 31, 2012. He was crossing the street in a crosswalk at Southeast 71st and Powell when he was hit.

PORTLAND, Ore. – A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car in Southeast Portland Wednesday night and the driver left the scene, according to police.

Police responded to a hit-and-run call at about 9:30 p.m. They arrived at Southeast 71st and Powell to find a 60-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. He has since been identified as David Charles Eklund.

Lt. Chris Davis with the Portland Police Bureau said Eklund had almost finished crossing the street in the crosswalk when he was hit.

Davis said the vehicle stopped briefly and then left the scene. The car the suspect was driving was a black, smaller SUV that was last seen going west on Powell toward downtown.

Witnesses said the driver was a white male in his 30s or 40s with short, black hair.

Police are continuing their investigation and are looking into whether the incident was caught by security cameras at nearby businesses. Davis said they are also looking into what the traffic signals were showing when the man was hit.

Davis said that "anytime you are involved in a traffic crash with another vehicle or pedestrian or anything else that results in an injury, you are required by Oregon law to stay at the scene and render assistance."

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Officer Chris Johnson with the Traffic Division at (503) 823-2103.
