Deputies search for driver after cyclist hit in Beaverton
BEAVERTON, Ore. - Deputies are looking for a driver and vehicle after a cyclist was hit in the Bethany area Tuesday morning.
Washington County Sheriff's Deputies said 40-year-old Joel Mays was able to call for help on his cell phone after he was hit by a white "construction-type" pickup truck on NW Bronson Boulevard near Bethany Boulevard.
Mays said he was hit from behind and thrown from his bicycle.
The crash took place at about 5:40 a.m. and deputies said Mays had minor injuries to his face. He went to a hospital on his own.
Anyone with information about the crash or the driver is asked to call Beaverton Police at 503-629-0111.
To hell with the biker.You know he was just another Obama supporting,gay,commie,socialist,Marxist,anyway like all of the rest of expletives who ride bicycles in the Portland metro area.
@noneofyourbizzness If the shoe fits.......
Depending on how it occurred the driver may not even have been aware that they made contact with the bike.Â
Look at all the posts that blame cyclist. Cars everyday cars hit pedestrians in crosswalks, buildings located off the street, cars run into one another, and they leave the roadway.Â
Why is it the anytime a cyclist is run down by an automobile the only responsible party is the cyclist?
Regardless of who hits who, the key thing to remember prior to an incident is "To See and Be Seen" by both participants!
@jpk Â
Really? I thought the key thing was not to hit other objects and to conduct a vehicle in a safe, reasonable, and lawful manner.Â
I have never hit anything with my car and I have driven 40 years in all kinds of conditions and around all kinds of people doing all kinds of stupid things with their vehicles. I have driven around thousands of cyclists and never hit a single one.  However, I have been hit by motorists on 4 occasions while was driving my car and on every occasion the driver of that vehicle was doing something stupid....typically speeding.
So you want to blame me....four times....for being hit because I wasn't "visible" to the other driver? The insurance companies and the police...the real police....take issue with your assessment.Â
And I take issue with your assessment that the only reason that a motorist hits anything is that they could not avoid it because the other object wasn't visible.
@jpk I like how Cyclists and pedestrians go out at night in all black, with no lights or reflective gear. They are just asking to be run over, and I think it should rightfully be their fault.
So if all drivers were just like you I wouldn't have to worry about it. But guess what? They're not.
You only address one side of my comment. The whole idea behind seeing and being seen by BOTH parties is that BOTH need to concentrate on doing what they are doing at the time, whether riding a bicycle or driving a car. That involves both parties keeping an eye out for others, and the others being visible so they can be seen. This applies to BOTH parties. It's called Defensive Driving; anticipate what might happen!
Would be interesting to know also,was any safety lights on the cyclist,was he riding where he was supposed to be? Many times I see cyclist with no lights and dark clothing at night and you cant see them until your right on them.
All that is true. Cyclists do need to take all the responsibility for being visible. My major gripes about other riders: 1) No (or very poor) lights after dark, 2) riding on the wrong side of the street (even in a bike lane), and 3)  crossing against a red light. Drivers need to take responsibility for seeing what's out there. And for God's sake, if a driver hits someone, STOP and help!
@Mechanic Â
You know when I'm driving my car my major concern is following the laws and not hitting other objects on or off the roadway.  And, that effort is independent of all the other distractions in or outside of my vehicle and has absolutely nothing to do with the behavior of other drivers or if a pedestrian is in a crosswalk or if another driver has his lights on or if that duck is legally crossing the roadway.
@Icarus I've never hit another object, car, truck, boat, plane, train etc.. but I have had two cyclists hit my car downtown. Not sure what they're paying attention to but the one cop that responded told the cyclist it was his fault for not paying attention.
@Icarus Try driving downtown at night, you'll change your tune. Driving around Tigard once or twice a day mid afternoon isn't a fair comparison.
Altough he should never have drove off, and I hope the cyclist is okay. I have been riding motorcycles for 40+ years and I think it is 75% my responsiblity to not get hit, and bicycles riders should do the same, don't depend on the cars and people in them to know you are there.
@old_dollor Yep had someone last night run me off the road last night. I suspect it was an elderly person or new driver. We were both turning left two lanes wide. They came around the corner next to me on the inside lane and just kept coming into my lane until I was in the bike lane and almost hoping on the curb. The horn did not seem to get them back in their own lane which is why I think it was younger or very old driver. That and you could not see them over the head rest from behind.
Had I not been paying attention we both would have been in for some major auto repair...
@old_dollor Exactly. You can't trust anybody on the road. Doesn't matter what you are driving. Always assume the other guy doesn't know you exist.
I have my biker buddies tell me "that guy changed lanes on me like I wasn't even there". I ask them. "Why were you in his blind spot?"
A hit and run is never OK. I hope they look at nearby security cameras and try to get a license plate.
Riding you bike at 5:40 am on Bronson is foolish IMO. Hope you're ok.
What's a "you bike?" Running into a cyclist may be excusable in some circumstance. Leaving the scene never is. Bronson would not be my first choice through that area, but then I am going to ride from Beaverton to Capitol Hwy on Beaverton Hillsdale in a couple of hours. Not a perfect bike route by any means, but better than Cornell or Barnes to get over the West Hills. I have lots of lights and don't expect to get hit. Likewise, were I driving, I would not expect to get hit, but I would expect the SOB who hits to stay around. I got hit once. It is not as much fun as you might think.
@Mechanic HEY, cut him some slack, he's Russian.
I omitted an R, sue me mr internet comment proof reader.
