A Northeast Portland bar caught fire early Friday morning, causing heavy damage to a landmark along N.E. Sandy Blvd.
Pal's Shanty Tavern caught fire just before 1:30 a.m., and neighbors called 911 to report explosions.
Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Rich Chatman said a second alarm was called because of concern the fire would spread to businesses above and beside the tavern in the strip mall at N.E. 47th and Sandy.
At one point crews were ordered to evacuate the building due to hazardous conditions. Investigators said it was a difficult fire to fight because the building is old. Chatman said crews contained it to the bar.
Neighbors said it was tough to see their neighborhood bar in trouble.
"Just driving by tonight and thinking of all the times I've been in there with my dad watching a Blazer game or Ducks game and hopefully the damage won’t be too bad," said Ted Thieman.
Investigators remained at the scene overnight Friday to go through debris and search for a cause. No injuries were reported.
