City Council votes to appeal state labor board's Frashour ruling

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland City Council voted unanimously Thursday for a court appeal of the state labor board's decision that says the city has to reinstate a fired police officer after he shot and killed an unarmed man.
An arbitrator and the state Employment Labor Relations Board ruled that Officer Ron Frashour should get his job back after shooting Aaron Campbell in January 2010 outside a Northeast Portland apartment complex.
The resolution passed by the commissioners Thursday allows the city attorney to appeal the city's case to the Oregon Court of Appeals.
On Tuesday support among all city commissioners solidified behind Mayor Sam Adams' push for a court appeal of the board's decision.
City Commissioners said the arbitration and state labor board systems are both biased in favor of public employees, and they want to turn the firing of Frashour into a test case for managing these kinds of disputes.
The mayor and other city council members feel Frashour's actions the night of the shooting violated his training, despite the rulings.
They maintain he doesn't belong on Portland's police force and that the review process unfairly ties the city's hands by ordering reinstatement.
This political power play can get interesting, and expensive!
Finally some city officials with some backbone that will stand up to the police union. Frahour was abad cop and Portland shold not be forced to keep a bad cop.
Wasting taxpayer money on a lost cause, for a dead criminal. Swell. It should be taken out of their paychecks when they lose.Â
When the portland city council doesnt get their way, they cry like little babies.
Aaron Campbell is dead because of Aaron Campbell's actions.
Sounds like the city council wants to be the ultimate authority even if the city has a contract with a process already laid out.

Typical liberal government. Don't like the outcome, change the rules.
 @RalphCramden It's fine when the police officers union wants to cheat the tax payers out of a year of back pay (plus 9%!), but when the teachers union does it you draw the line.  Get out of my country.
 @Daniel C It's pretty clear that you have not read the contract the city made with the union. How is the union "cheating" the tax payers?
Â
Your country? Interesting. I didn't read anywhere in the news about someone buying the US. One would think that something that significant would make front page news.
Â
Or are you one of those who wants everyone else out who doesn't agree with your political dogma?
 @Daniel CÂ
Government can cancel any contract at any time with any union. They can cancel SS and Medicare at any time also. The SCOTUS ruled on that in 1960.
 @RalphCramden Teachers unions have contracts too!  Derp...
@RalphCramden Did you ever doubt that liberals know what's best for all of us?
 @jpkÂ
Â
That is what they would like us to believe.
Â
Reality is only I know what is best for me.
