Portland restaurant Ava Gene's named a national trendsetter

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Duane Sorenson’s high-end Italian eatery, Ava Gene’s, has received a national shout out from a major industry publication.

The restaurant, from the founder of Stumptown Coffee Roasters, is included in the inaugural edition of Trending Tables, small cities edition, in Nation’s Restaurant News magazine.

Most lists are created with an eye toward promoting tourism. But Nation’s Restaurant News is a well-watched industry publication dedicated to covering food service for industry executives.

With Trending Tables, the publication highlights popular restaurants that are blazing new territory.

“Trends that start in independent restaurants often find their way to chains, making this feature a barometer for factors likely to influence the businesses of all of Nation’s Restaurant News’ readers,” the magazine explained.

Ava Gene’s, known for black cod with mushroom and prosciutto and mussel maiones, was previously rated one of the best new restaurants in America for 2013 by Bon Appetit magazine.

Ava Gene’s is third on the list of restaurants lighting up smaller cities, NRN said.

The 70-seat restaurant, 3377 S.E. Division St., shares the limelight with Hog & Hominy in Memphis; Niche in Clayton, Mo.; Etch in Nashville; and Del Campo in Washington, D.C.
