Portland named one of the best affordable spring break spots

PORTLAND, Ore. – Looking for a charming yet affordable spot for spring break? Maybe you should stay right where you are.
The City of Roses was named by USA Today as one of the top 10 great places for affordable spring breaks. The article listed the city’s notoriety for beer, coffee and bicycles as a few of the reasons it would make a great vacation hub.
“From microbreweries to coffeehouse bike tours, the country’s epicenter of hip has plenty to keep a visitor busy,” the article says.
We won’t disagree with that.
The article says you can book a hotel and get a free Portland passport coupon book with parking, food and other discounts. Also, our affinity for great food trucks means you won’t go broke at the bank.
Other spots that garnered a distinction? Hawaii (no surprise there), Myrtle Beach, S.C., Bermuda, Panama City Beach, Fla., Vermont, Orlando, Washington D.C. and St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Now if we could just get the Florida beaches ....
@uknow2Â Global warming is working on it
Gee how much did that cost us to buy.???
Portland has nothing to offer.
beer ~ maybe sunshine (at least today) ~ beer ~ cool night spots with good music ~ beer ~ great hiking ~ the coast ~ beer
I'm just trying to wrap my head around Portland being a spring break destination. What are they going to do while they wait for it to quit raining ? VOODOO and Powell's will only hold their interest for so long, most are to young to get in the bars or brewery's and god forbid they should get wet, and dressing for the weather here is not bikinis. Matted wet hair and mascara running down your face, not sexy. How do they figure Portland is inexpensive ? Fun in the sun or Portland hmmm ?
Food carts, warm weather, museums, best genealogical library on west coast.
@Marcia Staunton                                                                     Yeah, some of the food carts serve some great food, it's been sunny for two days, but we all know you cannot depend on dry sunny weather till after the 4th of July. I don't see kids standing out in the northwest drizzle to eat at the food carts. They want fun in the sun. If they were looking for museums I think they'd head to LA or SF, Portland just does not compare. Unless your Mormon I think maybe 1 in 5K kids would give a damn about a genealogical library.
street corner beggars, trust-fund babies causing trouble, gang shootings....
Beer
I'm not quite sure what tickles my funny bone more... The concept that Portland is an inexpensive vacation destination, or that it should be a spring break destination of choice?
LOL.Â
Methinks that someone in the portland travel office spent some dough with USA Today advertising department.Â
@MarkKpic Portland has been voted one of the nations most liveable city for quite a few years. I love it because there are so many things t odo without breaking the bank. Portland is for out-door types, loads t odo with little $ just be creative.
You people miss the point. If you love a place don't ruin it and remember, never met a person without a cold sore in Portland. I may like Portland but it was better when you were in LA.
Portland's a great place to visit in the summer months. Â I'm not sure how many tourists want to go to a rainy destination for spring vacation though! Â I highly doubt that the people who wrote this article actually traveled to Portland during spring vacation.
oh, so much to do.
Bellingham is top on my chart too!
Always cheaper to stay home! But the best things here are free; hiking in gorge past spectacular falls and views! Mt bike riding.... Cheap spring boarding on hood!
@Bluejean Belle now you're talking, Portland is full of stuff to do if you don't mind getting out of the mall and venture into nature.
The vibe is so relaxing, even downtown has a "shhhh..." to it. The people are even nicer and more approachable than in Seattle. And it's like a play land of bars and (healthy) food, and art!
when i lived in los angeles, i often came here on vacation. love it here. if Don Noe doesn't appreciate our town... he should leave.
Watefront is nice, Powell's is interesting, downtown clubs are fun, and we are spoiled with our fabulous coffee and tons of microbrew beers (I've been really disappointed with the beer selection other places). You can go to the mountain during the day and watch the sunset at the coast if you like, not many places you can do that in the same day. lol Plus...VoooDoo Donuts has the bacon maple bar!!!! :)
Nothing to do, it rains, smells like crap and everyone has herpes.
Shucks, the panhandlers have known about this for years. Â They turned spring break into a full time vacation, Â all at the cost of the citizens of Portland. Â Now the word is out and Portland will become overrun with deadbeats. Â Oh wait, it already is.
Yeah but there is nothing to do here..
yes but dont tell everyone
Yea whoop ... Uhhh why
Well if we see a bunch of people with umbrellas over spring break, we'll know people read and believed this!
uh oh
Laid back lifestyle here. No fuss, no muss, no rat race.
If you don't mind the rain!
Daaaaang. Somebody's got an amazing marketing team.Â
The best carnival on the planet is the one they have at the old dog tracks in Fairview every year. There's never anybody there because it's always wrath-of-God raining. Last year they moved it to the Reynolds High School parking lot and it still got rained out.
@Playanekes Tell m emore about the dogtrack? The race could be fixed but a dog does win so you have a chance.
All that liquid sunshine, hmm?Â
In both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. :)
@starshadow Meh, a half dozen "Sex on the Beaches", and everything will seem sunny.
I'm not sure if I'm more amazed that Portland would even be considered on any "positive" Spring Break list, or that Hawaii, Bermuda, and St. Croix were on an AFFORDABLE Spring Break list.Â
Affordable Spring Break destination shamefully left off the list:Â Akron (OH), Kansas City, Fargo (ND), and Midland (TX).
@OSUx2Â I'm thinking the places that should have been on the list were Seattle (or anywhere in Washington) and Colorado...
Wow I can hardly stand to go into Portland for a couple hours, but a week straight that is just so retardedly insane. Who could believe that BS?
What kind of a person, would call portland a spring break town....something is wrong with that guy.
@sortbait Who paid him to say that.???
@sortbait Somebody who wants to go back to school
The public bathroom tours conducted by a certain ex-mayor are alone worth the price of admission.
Where else can you ride a bike naked and smoke a bong at the same time without anyone looking twice?
@TimBurr Your backyard??
@TimBurr Seattle. Listen, college kids: If you're thinking about where to go, I PROMISE you, all they do in Seattle is ride around naked and take bong hits. EVERYBODY THERE. You should go.
@KATUNews @ricepearl
I'd hate to see the disappointed look on kids faces two days into spring break.
Ok, I love our beautiful city, but in all honesty, this is not the place for spring break. Â Bypass Portland, go to Palm Springs for spring vaca, then come back to PDX in the summer...August. Â That's our summer.Â
""""""""Portland named one of the best affordable spring break spots"""""""
affordable yes, because the demand to come here during spring break is so low......
Free body shots at my place. I have capri sun, kroger cola, and some mystery juice.
@Phuzz what a player...
