Portland police: Suspicious item was discarded school project

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say bomb-squad investigators have determined that a suspicious item left in a field wasn't an explosive but a discarded school project.

Police say officers were called to North Trenton Street and Haven Avenue Sunday afternoon after someone reported finding an item that resembled a possible small explosive device. The bomb squad was called in.

As a precaution, some residents in the area were evacuated.
