TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Ore. – A 21-year-old Portland woman died Monday when her car crashed down an embankment and landed in a creek in Tillamook County, state police said.

Haila Cheryl Ann Ruhl was driving her car on Highway 6 near Lee’s Camp. She tried to pass two other vehicles when she lost control of her Subaru Impreza, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The car crashed into a guardrail, went down an embankment and landed on its top in a creek.

Ruhl died at the scene.

Firefighters used ropes to get to the car, which was about 40 feet from the roadway, Hastings said in a news release.

Police said excessive speed was possibly a factor in the crash.
