Portland's school budget isn't looking good for next year

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland public schools are bound for another budget battle this year.
A budget forecast presented to the school board Monday evening is grim.
Based on the governor's statewide school budget for the next two years, Portland Public Schools will be $22 million in the hole next year. That's with reform to state retirement benefits. Without the benefit reform, that number could leap to $32 million over budget.
The school district said $32 million is the equivalent of 330 teaching jobs.
"the equivalent of 330 teaching jobs." Or 127 administrators.
But Portland has really nice stainless steel public crappers and bike paths. That should help offset the stupid kids that PPS turns out.
The school district said $32 million is the equivalent of 330 teaching jobs."
Â
Well then, fire them! Â Next year, fire another 330, and the year after that too! Â Soon, the whole system will be gone, and we can start over!
On other news scientists have discovered one of the largest black holes in the universe. They have dubbed it the Portland Public School system. It is unusual in that it only sucks in money. Of the other material that goes into it only 50% comes out and some of that material is barely functional.
Â
"it really is interesting compared to other black holes", said Professor Akins. "The more money it sucks in the less material that comes out. It really is a very inefficient black hole. It also appears to defy the laws of physics in that it can destroy matter and energy. For the most part it is a lifeless entity and devoid of any positive energy. We have seen people get close to this black hole and it actually sucks the intelligence right out of them. One of my colleges got too close and his IQ went from 160 to 75 and he keeps muttering "It's for the kids" over and over again. It really is an interesting phenomenon that defies all logic and common sense."
 @RalphCramden I like it.
Oh, don't worry...the jackass Multnomah county commissioners will impose a tax to fix it. Let's spin the wheel, property, water, electric, garbage...which? Tell us Vanna, what will it be this time?
Â
Surprise, surprise. How about you stop crying and complaining for more money and actually put the kids before the teachers unions and their ridiculous PERS benefits. Once the teachers and unions make concessions, I will be more than happy to talk about putting more money in. Until then, go to he** with your budget issues. The rest of us have to adjust our budgets to survive, so should you.Â
32million divided by 300= almost 100000 a year. Not bad. Not bad at all
"Portland's school budget isn't looking good for next year"
Â
Does it ever? $32 Million? Isn't that what they usually pay he top administrators who stay a couple years, screw things up and then disappear with their "golden parachutes"?
We should have spent the money on schools instead the Max line *crime train) to Milwaukie... It wasnt needed or wanted by the people living there.
The only thing 'looking good' for Portland Public Schools is the bloated PERS and benefits.
Â
The teachers have put their personal welfare above the welfare of the students and the school system.
Â
And we wonder where the 'me first' attitude comes from...
Does it ever? Same old story different year.
With over half the budget going to teachers salaries and PERS, PPS will always scream "we need more money". I bet you (the taxpayers) could give PPS twice as much money as they have now and they would still say "we need more money".
The school district said $32 million is the equivalent of 330 teaching jobs. How about equivalent of 30 top administration positions. You never hear that???
Here it comes !
they are still using ancient device called a "Chalkboard"?
Can they go 1 year without the line we don't have enough money. Its just so funny the way you suckers of Portland fall for it every year but watch out as come November you already gonna have Major Increase in property taxes and quite a few of you are gonna have sticker shock.Without major reform your throwing good money after bad.
And the problem is all the 'renters' approve these property tax increases on the backs of the home owners. My property tax bill is exploding. I for one can't keep paying for these 'bond' measures for the School Districts, Library, and all the other things. Dont folks know if you tax the H3ll out of home owners, no one will buy, housing will shrink and then again, where are you going to get your money for these projects? Lets stop paying for illegals numerous benefits, teachers huge PERS benifits and the, then home owners will have no problem coming to the table and helping out but renters, who ultimately pay also they are just to stupid to realize it, isn't the solution. Fire the top officials mismanging, fire the greedy teachers and start over.
@riderofthelegend that is the truth, it is why my parents stopped voting on the school budget..the term "use Property taxes" means raise taxes..and that is ugly so to me,, I read the question and it reads, are you willing to become homeless so that kids can go to school?
I could have predicted this one...I think anyone could. I wonder if PERS gave an annual increase?
Y'know, I have to laugh a little every time I see a headline like this...not because it's a humorous subject (it isn't), but because I cannot remember the last time I heard or read about a school district - or any OTHER tax-funded agency/entity - coming up to new-budget-time and saying "We will be proposing our new budget in the same amount as our last budget (no add'l money needed)"... OR "We came in BELOW our last budget - we found some new ways to spend more efficiently.. so we won't need quite as much this time..!" Â Â
Bottom line, folks, as I'm sure most of you already know...it doesn't matter how much money we turn over to them; the schools and the rest of gov't will NEVER, EVER have enough..! Â Â
Tell Nike to pay its fare share of taxes, instead of dodging them
Hmmm, let's see, we have schools budgets that are in the hole, but yet, a disaster of hwy engineering between Corvallis & Newport that could potentially cost another $150 million to repair is up for debate. Maybe we should focus on funding schools, put major road/hwy jobs on hiatus and show where our priorities really are.
Yeah lets get rid of more school job. Why not make each class size 70 to 100 students and see how well they do. Why not take away all the school security and see what else can happen. Every year all we hear is there's no money for schools. Well they better find away fast because otherwise our kids won't be safe and there will be more and more drop outs looking for dead end jobs. We hear how the lottery helps fund schools and that was one big sale point when people voted for the lottery well I would really like to see how much our schools are really getting. Wake up people and fix this problem.
lets be honest for a minute...... the state takes in plenty of money to fund education.  Its just a matter of how the good Dr. ReRun prioritizes  the money he spends.Â
I would humbly suggest the state fund education and the legislature can then squabble on how to prioritize spending on the less important expenditures.Â
Cut military funding and put that money towards education in our own country!! Â I'm sick of hearing about teachers being underpaid, no money for schools, and bad student/teacher ratios.. Â It's time we wake up as a country and start educating our youth! Â
@A74R1Â Â """""Â I'm sick of hearing about teachers being underpaid"""""
tenured teachers at my kids high school make $72k/yr + unbelievable benefits+PERSÂ .... In round numbers their total compensation is north of a hundred grand a year....... thats pretty good money for under nine months work.
"""""It's time we wake up as a country and start educating our youth! """""
IMHO, sadly its the lack of parental support that makes the biggest difference in how well kids do at at school.
@kramr I can't believe it, but I'm going to agree with you. My parents have friends who retired from the school system, their retirement package is giving them more money than they ever earned while working. I blame the teachers unions for the vast majority of the outrageous compensation. And I agree, parents need to do more with their kids to help them succeed in school, and no, it's not just passing the test and doing homework, it's also called teaching the kids some basic common sense.
@pdxd  @kramr Yep my mom is living high on the PERS hog as well...
This is a sick joke, we fund all of this state security (anti-terror squads), $100m presidential inaugerations that no one wants to go to, etc. and we can't even fund our schools? And then our schools get attacked by gunman and people want greater school security! America is broke people, we can't even afford to pay our teachers $35k a year with crap benefits. And those are the jobs that are getting cut...
Â
And then on top of it all, our education just sucks in general and we are no longer the most educated in the world. Even if you do get a proper education there likely won't be a job for ya...
Â
We are producing a bunch of zombie dumbies that want to do nothing but use their iphones or digital devices! Children can barely even write with handwriting!
 @portlandborn83Â
And about the over a billion dollars spent to become president.
Â
Romney has somewhere in the $600 million range and Obama was in the $500 million before the end.
Â
So a billion to spend on becoming president, but no one seems to care.
@portlandborn83 The school district said $32 million is the equivalent of 330 teaching jobs.....
That would make it almost $97 KÂ per teacher per year. Maybe the problem might be in the school district or...maybe the union dues are too high.
 @faith  @portlandborn83Â
Â
Yeah but for every 10 teachers there's an administrator to boss them around. I figure about 20% overheard for each teacher that is not part of their pckage as part of the "administrative" costs to make sure thety "stay on track" (i.e. administer tests, policies and other P.C. bologna).
Hmm...22 million in the hole from a school district that passed up 40 million in government grants because they did not want to be held accountable for their teaching standards. Tell me again why any of us should care?
But it's for the CHILBREN!! /sarcasm
We passed three measures in the last two cycles for 3 tax increases (plus one for arts) for over $500 million MORE in taxes for Portland area schools.
Â
I will be spending $1500 9more than double) in taxes on my house and my kid STILL does not have a school in the area to go to (Marysville is still not being worked on).
Â
@Repoman sometimes you just have to move to where the good schools are..
@A74R1  @Repoman It's called moving out of the city. Works great.
